5.0 out of 5 stars Works with Apple PowerBooks-Even the packaging says so!, November 23, 2005
By
This review is from: Logitech V270 Cordless Optical Mouse for Bluetooth - Bright Silver (Personal Computers)
Within a week of purchasing the similar Logitech V200 cordless mouse, the company announces the V270, much to my chagrin. Finally, a Bluetooth mouse was released that has all of the qualities I desire:

- Made by one of the "big three" mouse manufacturers (Microsoft, Logitech, Kensington);
- Has more than one button and a scroll wheel (sorry Apple!);
- Under $50.00;
- Does not require purchasing a hefty charging stand/receiver;
- Works natively with Mac OS X's Bluetooth drivers.

As the title of this review states, the packaging does call out the fact that the mouse works well with PowerBooks. Don't own a PowerBook? The mouse works with any Bluetooth-enabled Macintosh computer running 10.2.8 or higher, or any Windows 2000/XP machine with a Broadcom/Widcomm Bluetooth chipset. Aesthetically, the mouse is just a slight shade of silver darker than that of the aluminum PowerBooks. (A charcoal-colored version of the V270 is also available.) Including a neoprene carrying pouch that zippers shut is a nice touch on Logitech's part, considering the relative cost of the mouse itself.

As the V270 works natively with Mac OS X's Bluetooth drivers, I was up and running within minutes. The mouse is as responsive as you'd expect from any average cordless mouse during normal use. Since the mouse sends its signal in pulses (compared to traditional RF cordless mice whose signals are constant, even when immobile), there is a slight lag (less than a second) when first moving the mouse after a period of inactivity. After that initial movement, any subsquent hand gestures are met with an immediate response. Although it may sound annoying, this behavior is a good thing, as it helps improve overall battery life.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of all (for me) is the reclamation of a USB port that was previously occupied by the V200's USB dongle.

Definitely recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wish it was just a little bit bigger!, January 11, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Logitech V270 Cordless Optical Mouse for Bluetooth - Bright Silver (Personal Computers)
For some reason there is a dearth of full-size Bluetooth mice. There are tons of full-size WIRELESS mice, but why would I want to waste one my MacBook Pro's USB ports on an IR dongle, when I already have Bluetooth built-in? There is Apple's Wireless Mighty Mouse, but I have found it to be a bit flakey when using it on other folks' systems. I particularly don't like the feel of the scroll button on the Mighty Mouse, and the side buttons are near-impossible to use, to the point where they might as well not be there at all. What I want is a simple, no-frills Bluetooth mouse. The only mice that fit my criteria (that I could find) are the V270 and the RadTech BT600. The RadTech was a little more expensive than I wanted and not from a company I have experience with as far as computer peripherals, so I chose the V270. I'm mostly happy with my decision.

The V270 paired with my computer very easily. Even better, since I'm a freak about saving energy and always turn off the mouse when I'm not using it, the V270 pairs back up automatically and quite quickly when I turn it back on again. It can even pair with the computer while it's sleeping and then be used to wake it up. It is also a good looking mouse, and goes nicely with my Aluminum MacBook Pro and white Apple Wireless Keyboard.

My only complaints:

1. On a Mac, the speed of the mouse is a little frustrating. The mouse doesn't come with any Mac drivers, which normally I would see as a plus: it just works. However, the second lowest speed setting in System Preferences is WAY too fast and the lowest setting is is WAY too slow. I read that this is supposedly because of the V270's super-high 1000 dpi tracking. Whatever it is, it's frustrating! Didn't anyone test this on a Mac before shipping it? The good news is you can get around it pretty easily using one of several third-party mouse utilities available for the Mac. I chose one called MouseZoom because it is freeware. There is another called SteereMouse that worked very well too and also gave me a lot more control than the built-in software over the functions of the various mouse-buttons (for example, I could set the scroll wheel button to show the applications switcher). But I didn't want to pay $20 extra to make the mouse work like it should out of the box, so I was happy to find the freeware alternative.

2. My second problem is that the mouse is just a little smaller than I would prefer. It is not quite as big as the normal Mac mouse. I can't really complain, since it is billed as a notebook mouse. And it is bigger than most notebook mouse. But I have somewhat big hands and I would actually like something a little bit bigger than the normal Mac mouse, especially in terms of height. I do feel a bit of strain after using this mouse for long periods. I would definitely choose a bigger mouse if there were more players in the bluetooth mouse field. But since there aren't, I feel like this is the best option.

Overall, I'm happy with it, and for someone with smaller hands it might be perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars All good except one area, December 24, 2005

loubapache (Michigan, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech V270 Cordless Optical Mouse for Bluetooth - Bright Silver (Personal Computers)
I have had this mouse for about one week now. I have been using the Logitech wireless optical mouse and then the V200 for a couple of years now and this mouse feels just as solid as the other two USB based.

I had no problem connecting it to my Dell 6000 and Thinkpad X32 (both have internal bluetooth module). It works very well.

The only problem I have is after a long period of inactivity, the mouse goes to sleep. I have very inconsistent results to wake up the mouse. Sometimes all I need to do is to move the mouse or click a button; some other times, I have to turn the mouse off and then on; then at another times, I hve to repeatedly turn it off-on-off-on, until I see the blue light comes on. There does not seem to have a pattern.

Other than that, the mouse is excellent.
