I did not purchase this mouse for gaming, but instead bought it for its high DPI -- without running the driver software the mouse can switch between 800 and 1600 DPI. The special driver software is not available for Mac, which is the platform I use.Over the years I've learned to eliminate my mouse-related cramps/pains by using the fastest mice and drivers available. I formerly used the Logitech Mx300 (an 800 DPI mouse) with USB Overdrive (A third-party Mac driver) at the fastest DPI setting (80 DPI) -- All fine for a few years, but I had to live with the mouse skipping pixels when I tried to be precise with it -- that made PhotoShop work sometimes frustrating. This mouse has the same form-factor as my older Logitech mouse, which was the other reason I considered switching. (Logitech seems to have carried on this form-factor through the years, and I hope they stick with it.) It tracks very well without a mouse pad (I'm using on a Birch veneer IKEA desktop) and the 1600 DPI mode makes for really, really, precise movement -- no more skipping pixels. Since I keep the mouse on the highest setting all the time, I can slow it down with the top button when I need extra precision. I've only been using the mouse a few days, but I've noticed a few gotcha's: First, my former Mx300 had a metal weight in the mouse. This was easy enough to remove, as the screw hole was exposed. Not so on the G3. It feels like there's a weight in there, but the screw access is probably under the pads. Fortunately, the pads are really, really slick, so it's probably not going to be a problem until they get scratched up a bit and the responsiveness goes down. Anyone concerned about getting a stiff or cramped wrist from mousing would be wise to remove the metal weights from their mice -- IMHO, The Man put them in there to make you work harder! Ahem... Next, when upgrading from an 800 to 1600 dpi mouse, the 'mouse acceleration' is not 1:1 -- I can't quite set my mouse driver (third party or OS X driver) to 'feel' the same as my old mouse -- it's a wee bit off. Third, the cord is a bit stiff -- definitely stiffer than the Mx300's cord, or my default Apple mouse cord. You can feel it resist when using the mouse, tugging at your hand a bit. I'm hoping it wears in. Also, the little middle button is not reprogrammable, as it is on my Mx300 (the mouse has the same form-factor, except the G3 has two additional side buttons) -- it's a hard-wired toggle between 800 & 1600 DPI (when not running the driver software). I don't know if it reprogrammable if you're running the Logitec software, but it's at least something Mac users should consider. Finally, this mouse touts a non-slip grip, which I would say it definitely has. However, it feels a bit abrasive on my finger tips -- feeling a bit like "rubberized emery-cloth." I doesn't just give traction, but feels like there are gritty particles on the surface. Bleh. Maybe years of sitting at my desk and writing software for 14 hours a day left me with sensitive fingers tips, I guess? Ideally, I'd rate this mouse between a 3 and a 4. I'm hoping the little niggling things, like the stiff cord and the abrasive grip sides, wear in after a while. However, precision and sensitivity are what this mouse does well, so I'm willing to forgo 3 stars and give it 4 -- I like it, but I don't love it.

I was pretty happy with the MX 310 for about a year. I'm still happy with it for the most part, but I figured I was missing something. I wanted the new tecnology with higher accuracy. The G3 fits the bill. With the Setpoint 3.01 software, you have many options. You can set the DPI (Dots Per Inch for those that don't know) to five settings from 800 through 2000. Also when using the SP software you set Axis sensitivity. Of course the best part for me is the small footprint of the mouse and the fact it has no funny angles for righties. It is extremely light, without feeling cheap. I finally got a mouse with the high DPI settings without the funny angles, its about time. Anyone who enjoys MX 310 won't have a problem here.A few slight quibbles I have with this mouse are 1)the mouse bottons no longer cover the whole top of the mouse like the mx 310 they end a bit early on the sides which sometimes lead to hitting the side and saying hmm. I'm sure I will get used to it. 2)the forward and back buttons are a bit soft, they don't have the same hard click as the other buttons. I'm sure I will also get used that. I have tried in games like FEAR and COD2 this thing is deadly accurate, I'm still trying to keep control of it after using the half speed mx 310. Nice thing about it is I can set it to the same speed as the 310 if I wanted but that defeats the purpose so a few more days and I know it will be second nature. Anyone with smaller hands or Lefties do not hesitate to buy this mouse! If you like the functions of the Logitech gaming mouses but hate the size and the angles of them, then this mouse is for you!

First, I have 2 minor complaints I'd like to get out of the way. This mouse is a few more dollars than the G5, so I wish it had the dpi meter display on it like the G5 does, as it should for the price. Also, about the right "forward" button on the right side perimeter of the mouse: The size and position of this button makes it a little awkward for me to hit it with great comfort, but it's still possible and not too bad. Now, on to everything great about this mouse. As someone else mentioned, with the downloaded software, this mouse can be customized and with five dpi settings from 800-2,000. By default, before software, the mouse has 2 speeds, 800 and 1600 dpi. 1600 dpi is blazing fast, and I can barely control the mouse at this speed, but it's incredible. 2,000 is even faster. I can't wait to get used to it (I just got the mouse). Switching between dpi settings is really easy by just clicking the "running man" button on the mouse. The main left and right buttons feel great with a wonderful click. The feet on the mouse glide very well. The scroll wheel is smooth with light scroll "clicks" as you scroll it. Overall, this mouse feels great, the materials used are of the highest quality, and it's deadly accurate no matter how quickly I move it (even when I try my hardest to mess it up). This is an awesome-looking mouse, too. It's a real pleasure to use. As a side note, I chose this over the G5 because the G5 lacked a "forward" button for internet surfing, which I do a lot of. Even though the G5 has the dpi meter, I still think this mouse is more suited to my needs, and I'm very happy with my choice of the Logitech G3. Highly recommended.

After, reading many reviews, I chose the G3 Laser Mouse. I wasn't disappointed! Right out of the box it far surpassed my old "roller ball" type mouse and made gaming, surfing and computer work alot easier. I was also amazed at the downloadable software which made the G3 customizable to my own needs. It does take a little bit of getting used to the the new buttons but that goes with the territory.I'm very pleased with the product, support and the software. Logitech built a better mouse not a trap!

I had been going through optical mice at a rather alarming rate. They were inaccurate and undependable! I am not a "gamer", but even us task oriented computer users need a good mouse! This unit has been a dream! Well worth the price. Highly dependable and accurate!

I have been using this mouse for more than two years. I have rather small hands. This is the most comfortable corded all-purpose mouse I ever had. I once tried Logitech G5 and Razer deathadder, both are too large to use. It looks so pretty and well built, I really want to keep it forever.

Great Balanced Mouse I Chose over "Ergonomic" Ones,

I picked up Logitech G3 about 2 months ago. Before this, I had been using Logitech's various wireless mouse, like MX1000, VX Revolution, and MX Revolution. I have decided that I will stick with Logitech G3 from now on, or at least, something of similar shape. While work as an engineer in front of computer for extend time during the day, I also play the piano, so posture and ergnomic is a big thing for my wrist. What I realized is that ergonomic mouse is not that ergonomic after all because they are shaped to twist your hand's palm facing inward obliquely, which influences your elbow to tug in to your waist which in turn tighten your shoulder and muscles under the armpit and around the ribs. These tension over long time generate pain and improper posture and possibly carpal tunnel. Therefore, a "flat" mouse with Logitech G3 shape is more ideal, where the hand is allowed to face the desk in parallel, similar to the hand shape of playing the piano. Secondly, Logitech G3 is extremely precise with its high and adjustable DPI (great for gaming, though I don't game much on my computer). I really enjoy the immediate response different from when I was using wireless. It tracks well on majority of surfaces I have thrown at it and glides very well with the huge Teflon pads on the bottom. Its weight is not too light and not too heavy. It's much lighter than wireless mouse with the batteries which I have become to like. Thirdly, the 5 buttons are plenty for me where I left the the middle as "middle button" and with Logitech's setpoint software, I set the left side button as "Copy" and right side button as "Paste" because I already can mouse gesture "Forward" and "Backward" in my browser. I prefer 5 buttons now because I realized how hectic those many buttons make me with all the options I can set. More is not always better. The only complaint I have is that the cord is a little stiff. Too bad it's discontinued. I'm glad there are still sellers for this item. I bought one for home and one for work.

Decent mouse but 3 flaws,
This review is from: Logitech G3 Laser Mouse ( 931691-0403 ) (Personal Computers)
I have had this mouse for several months now. It performs well overall. I will only focus on the negatives. First it's not as good for gaming as I would like. I like logitech's other gaming mouse as this feels too small for my hand and too light. I am average in height so that means most people will find it too small. It feels like my hand drapes over it and so the sensitivity is not so good. Second the side buttons on both side of the mouse sticks out and gets in the way. When you have your hands around the mouse you will constantly feel this. Lastly, the mouse has a nice feature of having dynamic sensitive adjustments up to 5 but you have no idea which of the five you set it too other than basing on how the mouse cursor reacts when you move the mouse. This is hard to tell often times. These 3 flaws make this mouse not worth buying relative to the price for the other logitech mouse. But all other features are really good.

I believe the G3 is the best ambidextrous, wired, laser mouse on the market. The G3 is replacing a 6-years-old MS Intellimouse. Comparison between G3 laser and Intellimouse optical:* G3 is smaller and easier to lift thanks to the DryGrip side surface. The small size of the G3 is not ideal for people with large hands or those who prefer a bigger-sized mouse. * G3 weighs slightly less. * G3 left and right buttons requires more force to click. This is a good thing because often with the Intellimouse, resting my finger on the buttons would result in accidental clicking. The Intellimouse buttons, I think, are too loose/sensitive. * G3 side buttons are quieter to click. It is also smaller, so less chance of accidental clicks. * G3 scroll wheel takes more force to scroll. The Intellimouse iwas way too loose. I prefer the G3 for more precise scrolling. * G3 middle button takes more force to click. This is also preferable to the Intellimouse because I often accidentally clicked the middle button while scrolling--another example of a button on the Intellimouse that is too loose/sensitive. * Both provide smooth and accurate/precise tracking on most surfaces. * Intellimouse has tracking problems when using the mouse over a white-top table. G3 has no problems. * G3 cord is longer. * Both are comfortable to use with either left or right hand. I'm left-handed but sometimes use my right hand to control the mouse. * G3 has no annoying red glow. The MS Intellimouse I have suffers from the dreaded 'double-click' problem where a single click registers as a double click. The problem started one month into ownership and I lived with it for 6 years. A small percentage of Microsoft mice have this problem. It may be the contacts are bad/cheap. This also made dragging and dropping a problem or anytime you had to hold the left button down for more than a couple seconds. The Intellimouse is also peeling from normal wear and tear and/or from me digging into the mouse with my nails. The G3 is made for gaming but is very good for daily use. I didn't bother installing the Setpoint software. Windows XP had no problem detecting the mouse. Debian 4.0 had no problems either and I didn't have to modify xorg.conf even though the previous mouse was plugged to a PS/2 port and the new mouse is plugged into a USB port. Without the Setpoint software, the G3 defaults to 800 dpi on start-up, so you will need to click the top button after each boot for 1600 dpi setting. All-in-all, the G3 is a worthwhile upgrade from the Intellimouse optical mouse. |
