Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Logitech G510s Gaming Keyboard is handsome, well designed, and well built. The main features of this keyboard are the Game Panel LCD which displays information via applets, and the 18 programmable G-Keys that can be set to do any number of things including playing back macros, running LUA scripts, running programs, etc. Although it's marketed as a gaming keyboard, the programmable G-keys can be highly useful for normal windows/work-related tasks, especially if you need to repeat operations.

To get the most out of the Logitech G510s, you need to install the excellent G software. The software enables backlight color control, activates the Game Panel, and most importantly enables G-Key programming capability. The Logitech G software is quite powerful but still simple to use, and if you own other Logitech G products, you can configure and control all of them from the Gaming Software control panel. With the G software installed, you can also record marcos on the fly using just the keyboard.

I used to own the Logitech G13 Programmable Gameboard which also incorporates a Game Panel LCD and has 27 programmable G-keys. The main issue with the G13 is that it serves as a keyboard replacement during gaming and using it outside of gaming is cumbersome since it's bulky and lacks keyboard functionality. The G510s is an excellent compromise since it offers both programmability and normal keyboard function in a single device. It should be noted that you can switch between 3 memory slots so the 18 programmable keys map up to 54 commands per game. The G510s lacks onboard memory as compared to the G13, so your macros and scripts are saved and executed in software.

Love that back lit keys, one thing my last keyboard was lacking.

Only problem I have had so far is that its hard to get used to having the G keys to the left of ctrl - esc, keep trying to go over there to find wasd but I will just have to get used to.

All in all I love everything about this keyboard, another logitech product that I love, and believe will last a long time.

I don't play games on my computer but I use it a lot at night for business and the lighted keyboard is awesome, I don't need to turn on any lights in my office because it is lit and I can use the short cut keys to start other programs I regularly use. I would recommend it highly even for non-gamer's.

I enjoy online gaming and wanted a KB that supported programmable macros which is exactly what the Logitech G510s gives me. While touch typing is definitely possible, I have had membrane KB's with a better "touch". The s/w that you download from Logitech gives you full control over the 18 programmable keys and there are three "sets" for the 18 keys that you can program for a total of 54 macros. You can set up the KB to automatically switch to the correct profile when you run a game. Personally, I find the built in screen having very little use. You can put news feeds on it then strain to read a small scrolling screen. It will display game stats, a clock, or other items but who looks at their KB for visual input?

You can change the background colors that light the keys to anything you may like. For my default setting, I have the background set to dark gray so that I can read the keys that are light gray in color (the normal "movement" keys for gaming- a,w,s,d) That offers needed contrast so you can read the keys. The lights aren't very bright so in daylight lighting you probable won't even notice that they are lite - except for the mentioned keys where the key values disappear unless set to a dark color.

Primary reason for a 4-star rating is the key labeling. The key that gives you colon and semicolon have the exact same image (as checked with a magnifying glass) printed on the key so if you forget whether you need to use the shift key or not to get a colon, your screwed. The stencil for shifted 7 (&) looks a lot like $ and the keys that have [ ] { } look more like | | ( ) from normal viewing distance.

Space Bar Sticks, this complaint is widely noted andI had read the other reviews and there were a bunch that mentioned the Space Bar was sticking. I chose to ignore these, thinking that I have had a number of Logitech Keyboards and have never had an issue.

This Space Bar was unacceptable. Unless you hit it in the very center every time it sticks.

This keyboard may be good for some users, but unfortunately falls flat for me in a few key areas:

* My UEFI BIOS requires that I hit F12 or DELETE to enter the BIOS menu or boot selection. This keyboard, probably due to its complicated LED hardware, "reboots" itself when I reset my PC (you can see the LED display turn off, then back on). Unfortunately, it's not ready for input by the time I need to press F12, so it's essentially worthless for this. I have to keep a second keyboard connected for this case.

* The color LEDs are very cool, and you can choose from pretty much any color and intensity. However, all that goes away when you restart your computer, and it's not set until you relaunch the Logitech software. To be more specific: if you've set the colors in Windows or OS X and you reboot into Linux, it resets to its default of white.

* The keys feel very mushy and cheap to me. It may be that I'm just not used to the throw yet, but so far I'm not liking how it feels. While there are dimples on the F and J keys so you can touch-type, they are much smaller than most keyboards so every now and then I find my fingers on the wrong keys. In particular, the dimple on my J key is almost not there, although the one on the F key seems fine.

* It works fine with OS X, but as the keyboard is geared towards Windows, the placement of the alt and windows (i.e. command) keys is unfortunate. But that's more a "me" thing than a bona-fide fault with the keyboard, as you can clearly tell this before you buy it.

On the whole, the keyboard is the textbook definition of mediocre. I like the ability to set any LED color, but it's not enough to justify over any half-decent keyboard. Spend your money on something else.
