Logitech LX6 Cordless Optical Mouse

I wanted a mouse mouse to use on one of my other computers and just happened to stumble across this nice LX6 on clearance at target. Since I have an LX7 on my main computers, I figured I'd give this one a shot.

First off, the differences. As far as I can tell, the only differences is the lack of back/forward buttons, the large receiver, and some very minor design changes.

Performance wise, this mouse seems to work just as well as my LX7. Both are rather heavy using a pair of AA batteries, but in turn you get outstanding battery life. My LX7 will last at least 4 months of pretty heavy daily use. A little side note, if the weight is really a problem, the mouse will work with a single battery. I have not tested this for an extended time but have confirmed both my LX6 and LX7 will work without both batteries...go figure!)

Buttons have a nice feel to them. While I don't use the left/right scroll-wheel click, all other clicks have a soft feel. I will say they are almost too soft. Well, except for the center-click, though it seems much easier on the LX6 than my LX7.

There's really not much else to say regarding this fairly basic mouse. However, if all you need is a basic mouse, this is probably about as good as they get. No software is required either (unless you do want the left/right wheel clicks)

This mouse is nicely shaped, has a nice size and feels good in the hand. Please be aware, though, that it does not come with a "mini-dongle" USB receptor, but a big, cumbersome wireless device. To me, that defeats the purpose of saving as much desk space as possible.

I would recommend checking out the Logitech LX7, featuring the same size and shape, but with the aforementioned small USB dongle.

THE QUICK EVALUATION

The LX6 offers the convenience of cordless mouse operation to any computer (desktop OR even a laptop) that can spare a USB port. It performs flawlessly on any solid surface I've tested it so far. Size is a little larger than what I would consider a 'regular' size mouse but it's ergonomically shaped to fit the human hand - both me and my 12 yr. old kid felt comfortable using it.

Other notable features include: quick and easy plug-and-play setup (no disk), up to 8 months claimed battery life (could not verify that because we've only had it for a couple of weeks), extended features and customization can be achieved by downloading and installing software off Logitech's Web site.

If what you need is a cordless mouse for your dektop, it can't get much better than this. If you need a mouse for your laptop and you don't mind sacrificing this unit's precision, the Nano line is probably the better option because of the large, USB-plugged receiver the mouse needs to operate.

Mechanics/ergonomics:

As I stated above, the mouse is a bit larger than 'normal' size. It feels good in my hands (I am 6'2") and it feels right in my 12 yr. old's hand as well. Form-wise, it's as perfect as it can be for a 2-button/wheeled mouse. It is well balanced and the rubberized sides allow for a good grip.

A VERY good thing is the mouse becoming operational shortly after the receiver is plugged in - no installation required for just basic functions.

Logitech claims that this mouse is 'high definition'. As one who owns a couple of Nano models (a Logitech and a Verbatim) I will confirm that the LX6 is much more precise and responsive with smooth and accurate control.

As in its Logitech Nano cousin, the wheel is clickable and, with software installed, will have it's right/left tilt interpreted as configured.

The batteries are relatively easy to insert and remove. Battery life expectation (2 AA's) is 8 months if the small 'on/off' button on the bottom of the mouse is used. Also on the bottom side, a small LED turns on to indicate that the mouse is on and connected. On the top, right behind the wheel, there is a battery life indicator light. Since I've only have the mouse for a couple of weeks, it's not clear what it will do when the battery is about to run out but I expect some blinking.

I tested the wireless capabilities with the mouse up to 20 feet away from the computer and the mouse operated as expected.


Customization:

I STRONGLY recommend that all who purchased this mouse goes to the Logitech site (it's Logitech dot com slash download) and install the SetPoint software. SetPoint adds A LOT of functionality. By the way, anyone can download the software - no need to actually have a mouse - so, if you want to see what you can do with your mouse before actually buying it, do install SetPoint and see what's available. Briefly, these are the advantages of SetPoint running on your computer - again, I am using the mouse on a Vista machine and some features may be specific to this operating system.

- Swap the 2 buttons
- Tilting the scroll wheel right/left would do left/right scroll by default but it can be set to back/forward, previous/next, cruise up/down, even to specific keystroke assignments. Oh, and these can be done for 'all apps' or specific settings can be applied to an expandable list of specific applications - i posted an image showing the buttons setup first screen.
- Mouse movement can be customized for speed, acceleration, pointer trails and so on.
- A special 'gaming' setup is available and there is a 'game detection' option that can be activated - see the image I posted, showing the 'gaming' setup screen.
- Scrolling can be customized for acceleration on the vertical and horizontal AND for specific applications, if desired.


Conclusion:

The LX6 is well-suited for a desktop a even a laptop if precision is what is needed. I am VERY happy with it and, in fact, I'm not the only one in our household who feels this way :) - it may end up with one of my kids, eventually. The positives for this mouse are:

- Trouble-free operation.
- Easy initial setup.
- Customizable through software and feature-rich.
- Well designed.
- 5 year limited warranty, so make sure you keep that receipt.

As far as 'concerns' - and they are not necessarily 'negatives':

- It should be understood that this is NOT a Bluetooth device. Not being a Bluetooth device makes the setup and moving from one computer to another a lot easier (no need for pairing) but the receiver WILL take over a USB port so one should be mindful of this.
- The USB receiver size makes it somewhat inconvenient for using it with laptops.
- The on/off button on the bottom of the mouse is an interesting solution but, I bet, I will not always remember to turn off my mouse after done with using it.

Overall, this is a 5 star product IF used as intended, with a desktop. For laptop use, it should be a 4-star.

Very nice mouse, slick looking, comfortable feeling, works your choice of USB or PS/2.
Uses AA batteries, unlike some mice that use AAA. (AAs have trice the capacity of AAAs, and thus they last three times as much.)
Quite similar to the Logitech LX7, without the (quite useless) extra two buttons. (LX7 has a lot more reviews, which can be relevant. LX7 is USB only.)

So I got this as a gift from my grampa. Thanks, but I think I'm gonna return it. Comparing it against the Microsoft Wireless Laser 6000 mouse on my desk right now, there are a few apparent differences that the Logitech is worse in every category:

It's smaller/narrower; doesn't fit in my hand as well.
The clicks are much much louder.
The scroll wheel even clicks loudly, does not operate smoothly.

The best thing that it has going for it is the fact that it could be used as left-handed - my intended purpose. But it just is too much of a downgrade, I'm gonna keep using my better right-handed mouse.

While reading, keep in mind I'm a 6'2" computer programmer, so I'm larger than some, and on the computer more than most.

Needing a new mouse for my workstation at home, I was considering this mouse and a 3 button Microsoft mouse, both at the same price. Having used Microsoft mice for the last 10 years, I thought I would give logitech a try. This mouse is horribly uncomfortable. It's too skinny to begin with, and then the buttons don't extend to the edge of the mouse, so I found myself pushing on the edge of the mouse instead of the buttons. My hand was tired after only a couple of hours using the mouse. The crappy default Dell branded 3 button corded mouse is orders of magnitude more comfortable than this mouse. I will probably go another 10 years before I give logitech another try. Time to return this junk and get something I can work with.

Update: I've kept up with it for a month now, and guess what... it hasn't gotten any better. I just find other things that bother me. For instance, the middle click button (scroll wheel click) doesn't click at all. It just mushes. You can't tell if you actually clicked it or not. Sometimes I hardly have to push it, other times I have to press it hard three or four times. Stay away from this mouse.

The mouse worked well for the first month or so, but now everytime I use my computer for more than an hour at a time the mouse will freeze every two or three minutes for about 5 seconds or so. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but it gets very irritating when you're doing design work and working constantly with your mouse. I tried everything to make it stop and can't find a solution. I'm going to have to buy another new mouse.

I've had this mouse for 1 year and it works well.
The not-so-good things: sometimes the mouse freezes when I am making a call, seems cell phone signal would interfere; battery life was good but not outstanding.
Overall, this mouse is enough for most regular uses. Even for playing Counter Strike, it's quite accruate and responsive. I got this from office depot for just 19 bucks, so I can't complain anything.

I've used this mouse for a couple months and it's worked flawlessly. The response and wakeup time is quick. I've even used this for some high end gaming and it's performance has been good.
As with most wireless mice, you can expect some lag when the computer is involved with intensive background tasks such as updates. Other than that, I recommend this product.

This is a great mouse that works flawlessly. However, there are two things I don't like about it.

1. The dongle is huge. It's not even a dongle, really. Instead of a small USB dongle, Logitech chose to make it like a big paperweight attached to the USB port with a 3 ft cable. This thing takes up a 4x4" space on my desk! And that's not including the mouse.

2. The thing has a power button. I'm sure the battery will still last for the suggested 8 months, but having a power button makes me feel like I should be turning it off when I'm not using it. I don't feel like turning off the mouse every time I leave the computer. It's not a big problem, though, which is why I still gave this mouse 4 stars.

It's a good weighted mouse and feels good in my hand. Not much more you could ask (other than a smaller dongle)!
