4.0 out of 5 stars Forward button placement awkward
This mouse has a nice feel and extremely precise movement tracking. The only complaint I have is the forward button on the right. It's a little hard to press and sometimes I press it accidentally. I suppose I will get used to it with more usage though.

Also, if the mouse's receiver isn't close enough to the mouse, some buttons will work intermittently...

2.0 out of 5 stars One stopper flaw
First, let me say that I've used and like many Logitech products. I use their cordless trackman and MX610 and LX7.

I ordered this because while the LX7 does amazingly well for an LED mouse on plain surfaces, it's not quite up to laser sensors for very small movements when doing graphics work. I hoped that the LX8 was a step-up from the LX7.

It's not, in a couple of ways that aren't its fault: It's much lighter than the LX7 and lacks its pleasant degree of heft. It's wider, but that's not a fault.

The big problem is that the side buttons are easy to touch by mistake, and their resistance is so incredibly minimal that the only way I could have used this mouse would have been to disable those 2 buttons, and I don't like losing buttons on a mouse.

I thought it might just be my unit, but someone else had the same problem.

All buttons work correctly out of the box with my Gentoo Linux system. Just set the number of buttons to 9 in xorg.conf:
Option "Buttons" "9"

2.0 out of 5 stars Hardware Yes; Software NO, September 16, 2008

The LX-8 mouse, as a piece of hardware, is fine.

But the Setpoint software necessary to program the mouse's more advanced features is a disaster. It may work for you, but for many, many people it creates software conflicts that cannot be diagnosed and disable the mouse entirely. Go to Logitech's forums and you'll see hundreds of complaints about the software. Logitech gives the same stock answers to everyone. I tried them, and they didn't help, under either XP SP2 or SP3.

The only way I can use the mouse is with XP's standard drivers. If you are happy with the usual mouse functions, plus the use of the LX-8's dedicated page forward and page back buttons, then by all means go for this mouse. It's comfortable and works well with XP's drivers. If you are expecting to be able to program it, be prepared to be frustrated.

The software problems lower my rating from 4 stars to only 2 stars.

I've had several Logitech mice through the years since the early nineties when I got my first computer. I've had two other cordless mice. I was in love with the last one but, sadly, I fell prey to the "new machine" illness currently sweeping the land, i.e., I got a machine preloaded with #@&*#@ Windows Vista. Nothing worked on the new machine that I'd been so comfy with on the old machine, not even my beloved mouse.

(They don't tell you, those tricksey salespeople, that when you buy Vista, you'll have to buy "updated" versions of all your current programs, too, programs like Paint Shop, all your games [like Scrabble, Boggle and Bejeweled] and your virus protection programs. And WOW does that upgrading move quickly into some serious dollars!)

So I had to get another mouse, one that was Vista-compatible.

This mouse is as good as any I've used from this company and better than a couple. The ergonomics is superb. It fits smoothly into my hand and I don't have to reach for anything; it's all there at the slightest touch of fingertips or my thumb. I love the very, very dark blue color--plain black or black/silver was getting a tad boring and I didn't even know it. Another good thing is that once you begin to use to use the mouse for the first time, it guides you to a site wherein you can easily, painlessly, download the software for the mouse, right there at the site. No more tiny strings of numbers to read off boxes that have already gone into the recycling bin. I LOVE that!

This is a wonderful mouse. It's got a lot of power and oomph for a small price. You want a really good, basic cordless mouse? This is the one for you, in my opinion. (-:

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Logitech Mouse, January 4, 2010

This review is from: Logitech LX8 Cordless Laser Mouse (Personal Computers)
This is one of the best Logitech mice I have ever used! I tried using the MX620 and M500, both with the so-called "hyper" scrolling wheel. Do not believe the ads, that hyper-scrolling wheel is crap! It keeps spinning after your scroll with your finger! If you opt for the 'bumpy' scrolling instead of the smooth, it still feels cheap and was impossible for me to use. This mouse is solid, has a good weight to it, is symmetrical (for both leftys and rightys) and has crisp, tight buttons. I also like the simple button placement of the Back and Forward buttons. It was super easy to setup on both my Mac and Windows 7 (via bootcamp). All buttons are also programmable with a simple control panel. I can't speak much to battery life since I've only owned it about a month but I expect it won't be a problem. The wireless receiver is also super tiny and I have perfect reception up to about 25 feet away. Needless to say this mouse is perfect for gaming, web browser (!!!) and everyday tasks. Plus its pretty cheap, and its Logitech. Don't settle for those crappy Microsoft mice, get this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for laptops or PC's, December 12, 2009

I bought this mouse to replace the mouse pad on my laptop. The mouse itself works great. The scroll wheel is very smooth and the pointer glides on the screen nicely. I also like the back and forward buttons. I don't really understand the point of the reviver, because you don't need it to operate the mouse. Just plug the USB thumb into your computer and you're ready to go. The mouse also has a power switch on the bottom so you can turn it off when you're not using it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great mouse with great battery life, December 6, 2009
This review is from: Logitech LX8 Cordless Laser Mouse (Personal Computers)
I've used a couple of these wireless mice. This one is my favorite by far. The battery life was always a problem with the other models. I've had this one for over a year and replaced the batteries twice. While I'm no fan of the side buttons, I adapted to avoiding them easily. This is one of the few wireless products I've used that I would actually recommend to someone.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite mouse to-date, August 24, 2009

This review is from: Logitech LX8 Cordless Laser Mouse (Personal Computers)
I've owned or used perhaps 30-40 mice over the years between home PCs, work PCs, servers, etc., and this is my favorite so far. It's not perfect - in particular, I don't find that the placement of the side buttons is optimal (so I don't use them much). The side-to-side motion of the scrollwheel could also stand to be just a little bit easier.

I use a mouse on the desktop - or on top of whatever is ON the desktop. Mousepads just get in the way. This mouse works flawlessly on just about whatever surface I use it on. It also never burps. I've had very good luck with Logitech wireless devices (non-Bluetooth ones, anyway). I've been using the same Logitech wireless keyboard for years. So when my wired Logitech mouse finally gave up the ghost, I replaced it with this one, and couldn't be happier.

Great ergonomic shape, responsive, good build quality. A winner.

I purchased the LX8 cordless for my office and liked it so much that I purchased one for my home office too! The receiver works very well! It is a comfortable fit for both my left and right hand. (It's slightly bigger than the LX7.)
