2. Good looking

3. Easy to set up, just plug it in and it works, installing the software is another issue I'll address in a second.

The mouse works great. Installation was a breeze, the mouse functions exactly as I hoped it would. It looks great on my desk.

But.

The included driver disk tries to install all sorts of garbage along with the MouseWare software. Included on the disk are "eBay Shortcut" (presumably a Browser Helper Object, but I'm not going to...

Well, I've been using this one for about a month now and it's definitely growing on me.

Here's the Pro's:

1. Wireless, no cords catching on anything no distance restrictions.

2. Good looking

3. Easy to set up, just plug it in and it works, installing the software is another issue I'll address in a second.

4. NIMH Batteries with a reciever/recharger, the power lasts forever, and simply placing the mouse in the reciever to recharge is a great idea.

5. Semi-customizable buttons may add diversity for some users (I haven't found it very useful with the applications I use.)

The Cons:

1. NOT FOR BIG HANDS!! The ergonomic design is, from what I can tell, aimed at people with small to medium sized hands. I however am 6'5" and have extra large hands that do not fit the ergonomics of this mouse at all, it was actually very uncomfortable at first, but I've slowly gotten used to it.

2. Glitchy control in some applications. From what I've read this issue has to do more with Logitechs software than with the mouse. I use a lot of Adobe and Macromedia products for Graphic and Web design and this mouse just doesn't seem to want to work well with any of them. Left clicking while holding short cut keys has lead to all kinds of strange and annoying results. (to many to list)

3. Limited programming, with my previous mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer) I had the option of programming each button to activate just about any command I could think of, with any key combination I could want, which made my shortcuts in design applications a breeze, that mouse would also change the button functions depending on which program I had open.
The Logitech is very limited in the options that can be tagged to a button and they are also global, meaning they have the same function in all programs no matter what.
Not a big con for most but it stands out for me as a designer.

4. Bad and intrusive software. While installing this software I was asked if I wanted to install Wild Tangent software, which I have found is connected to Gator Corp software (a spyware/adware service, basically a program that notifies it's owners when ever you click on a site that sells something so that they can pop up ads with similar products at their leisure on your computer) not cool!
After opting out of those two the Logitech software still installed Logitechs Adware application Logitech Desktop on my PC, and with it a couple of executables that caused numerous problems and hogged up my PC resources, this culprit came up in my task manager with the mysterious lable BackWeb-884760.exe (can't remeber the exact numbers). However after uninstalling the Logitech Desktop software all of my problems were solved.

So all in all a great mouse for people with average sized hands, yet sporting some bad software issues, for people with the money I would recommend having a look at the Microsoft opticle wireless first, compare the two for yourself and then make a decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Precise Wireless, November 26, 2002
By
This review is from: Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) (Personal Computers)
As someone who does a lot of precision mouse work with graphics programs, I stayed away from wireless mice for a long time. Logitech has always made quality hardware, I've used several Logitech mice over the years. The classic 3 button mouse was great, then I made the switch to Logitech's first optical mouse a few years ago. The first Logitech optical mouse was not every precise but with it's glowing logo, it was quite the office eye catcher. For the past 6 months, I was using the dual optical for more precise movements.

The Mx700 is a really good looking mouse, the titanium/black finish matches perfectly with more modern components such as aluminum cases and silver finish monitors. The base station is quite sturdy and the mouse looks very attractive seated in the base unit.

Installation itself is fairly simple, just connect the base station to your computer's usb port and connect the ac adapter to the input at the end of the cable. You will need to charge the mouse for 2 hours before use. Once the mouse is charged, you will need to turn on the computer and install the software.

The mouse itself really shines when browsing, the forward and back buttons on the left side are quite useful. The scroll functions work well in IE, but you will need to change the settings in mozilla to get decent scroll speed, just look under the advanced tab in the settings menu.

I've read some previous complaints about software, but I've found that the MX700 drivers work great. I've also tested this mouse on Redhat 8 with no problems, although it does take some configuration to get the other buttons working. Logitech needs to port mouseware to Linux! Overall, a great mouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars For gamers ..., November 18, 2002

This review is from: Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) (Personal Computers)
I have read a lot about the incompatibility of this mouse with several games. Here are a few hints that could make things a lot easier,

1. Don't install the software that comes with it. I plugged in the mouse on my windows XP PC, and the mouse works just fine. The only button that would not work without the included software is the one on the center on top of the mouse. Since all this does is toggle between application, it not a big deal (you can use ALT-TAB for the same function). If you really feel the need to customize the buttons, wait for the latest software fixes/updates from logitech.

2. Don't throw away your favorite corded mouse. During gaming (heavy use), the mouse only lasts for about 6-7 hours on a charge. As this mouse runs out of power (needing recharging) you may need your corded mouse still plugged-in handy, if you are in the middle of some action.

3. The mouse feels very different at first, making you want to puke at throwing away you hard earned money. Be patient, this mouse takes time to get used to, and once you get used to it you'll love it! It is so precise, try sniping while running/strafing, you will never go back to your old mouse. The mouse is a little heavier due to the batteries, but since the mouse is so precise you can set it at high sensitivity (you'll get used to it) and you won't have to move it much. I personally like the "weighty" feel of the mouse, reminds me of the good 'ol mouse with a heavy rollerball underneath.

This an excellent mouse and well worth it with the $20 rebate.

This is the first cordless mouse I've bought. After doing a lot of research and reading the reviews I decided to buy this one. I wasn't disappointed. Here's why:

1. Ease of installation and use: It was a breeze to install and use. The software configuration utility that comes with it is excellent. It tells you when the battery is running low.

2. Charging system: The mouse came with two rechargeable batteries and a charging stand. The batteries last upto 18 hrs of use before they need to be recharged and usually recharge in a couple of hours. This mouse is not a battery guzzler.

3. Functionality and ergonomics: The scrolling is fast, smooth, and accurate. I have had no problems with any kind of signal interference. The shape is comfortable and I love the back/forward buttons.

4. Looks: The metallic on silver design perfectly complements my Viewsonic VA720 silver flat panel. The styling is modern, yet elegant.

MY RECOMMENDATION: This mouse is well worth the money. You won't regret buying this peripheral for your computer. Go ahead and pamper yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice mouse if a little pricey, October 28, 2002
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) (Personal Computers)
I've only had this mouse for a couple of days but thus far I'm pretty impressed. This mouse is replacing Logitech's dual optical which replaced the cordless Optical Mouseman Wheel. I replaced my first cordless mouse because it ate up batteries at a very high rate (I was lucky if I could get more then a month before tracking became erratic telling me it was time to change batteries), though some of the blame could be placed on my black mouse pad. The MX700 seems every bit as fast and accurate as the dual optical mouse it is replacing. If you use OSX, don't be concerned that the drivers that come with the mouse are only for 8.6-9.2. Without installing any drivers, all buttons work exactly as they should (even the program switcher).

About the only thing I don't like about it at this time is the power connector. The power cord plugs into the back of the USB plug instead of the back of the base/charger. This makes for an unusually long USB plug. If you have a Mac and plug it in to your keyboard it will protrude a good inch past the side edge of your keyboard. If you plug it into the back of the computer it will protrude a good 3 inches and if you have a PC and want to use the P2/S port you can add another inch to that with the P2/S adapter. That means you'll need about 4" clearance space in the back of the computer. Even though it would have added one more cord to the base, I would rather plug it to the base then the USB plug. While it is not a cheap mouse, both the mouse itself and the charging stand/base seem to be well constructed. For me the jury is still out for the button placement. Instead of the thumb button on the bottom of the mouse, there are two buttons on the upper left side of the mouse (back and forward buttons for web surfing-and they also work fine in OSX). Maybe I'll get used to their position in time. Also, unfortunately, with this mouse, southpaws need not apply, but I guess they're used to that.

As I've only had it a couple of days, I can't comment on the battery life per charge, but I expect it will only be a few days. Still, I prefer that to having to buy new batteries every month as I did with my previous cordless mouse.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but just look at this mouse. The Logitech MX700 has an awsome design not to mention that it fits perfectly in your right hand. This has to be the coolest mouse I have ever owned. The next great feature is the docking station. You can just recharge the battery instead of spending a bunch of money on AAAs. I am the type of person who will play computer games all day long. I was afraid my mouse battery was going to go dead half way through my gaming sessions but I have had my mouse for over two months and not once has the battery died while I had it in use. One time the red LED came on indicating the battery was low. I popped it on the docking station took a much needed bathroom break and got a bite to eat. 15-20 mins later when I sat back down it was fully charged and ready to go for another eight hours of gaming. I would say that the distance you can use the mouse is about six feet from the docking station as long as you don't place the docking station to close to your computer case or monitor. I only have a 15 inch LCD screen so I can't even sit that far away without binoculars to read my computer screen. The plug and play worked flawlessly for my windows 2000 pro with the latest service pack installed. I think I have yet to install the software for my mouse and I have no problem using all of my extra button features.
My breakdown:
Weight: The mouse doesn't have any noticable weight difference from a wired mouse.

comfort: The most comfortable mouse I have used but if you are a lefty I would make sure you get one fitted for your left hand.

Look: MX700 looks like a next generation mouse perfect for modded cases.

Battery life: Battery will keep going and going and going... as long as you remember to recharge it once an awhile on your downtime. Fast recharge approx. 15 mins. Red LED for low battery indicator.

Distance: For 90% of its users it will reach farther than is practical. No messy cord to get in the way of your mousing.

Compadibility: Haven't run into any trouble in my three months of gaming. It was an easy plug and play install as well.

It is perfect for anybody. There is only one thing that could go wrong. Since it runs on batteries you have to remember to charge it when you get done using it. If you are like me you will forget atleast every once and awhile. The mouse's battery isn't drained when you leave it on your desk for extened periods of time. I tried leaving it off the charging station to see how much juice gets drained when you forget about it. As far as I can tell it uses none or very little juice when not it use. I think the optical light turns off when you don't move it but I haven't set up an experiment to test that yet. I have my regular USB mouse still hooked up to my computer for those rare occasions where I forget about recharging my logitech and its red LED comes on after I have been using it for a little bit. You could also get another battery for your logitech and then you will always have a wireless mouse ready to go. GET THIS MOUSE IT IS WONDERFUL! You can't beat it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cordless Mouse to Date (5-16-2003), May 16, 2003
By
"merkuron" (Stanford, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) (Personal Computers)
I bought this mouse as a replacement for my aging Intellimouse Explorer (version 1!). Needless to say, it hasn't disappointed.

The MX700 has a quicker optical sensor than any other optical mouse for sale today (save the MX500), which gives it excellent tracking precision. Like all other cordless mice, it uses batteries, however, unlike all other cordless mice, it comes with a dock. Low on charge? Just pop it in the dock for 2 hours. Batteries last about a week with extended use, not sure how long with "normal" use. If this is too short, switching to some Energizer NiMH AA's will give you about double the runtime (while still being able to charge it in the dock).

There are a couple things to get used to with this mouse, though:
1. It is designed for smaller hands than any Intellimouse Explorer is.
2. It will initially feel heavy, due to the extra weight imposed by the batteries.

The extra buttons seem superfluous, but are useful, and can be remapped to keys if you're the gamer type. The scroll wheel is typical Logitech, with a very crisp turning action.

All in all, a very worthwhile purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm finally happy with my mouse!, November 4, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) (Personal Computers)
I'm not realy picky about my mice, but my frustration with a mouse cord always in the way, cluttering my desk, and restricting movement finally led me to go cordless. After reading rave reviews on some tech sites and comparing features, I chose this one. The price and reviews gave me high expectations which were handily exceeded. I did not know how much difference a mouse could make! It feels so natural that I'm disappointed when both hands are required at the keyboard. This is a top quality piece of electronics well worth every penny. The thoughtful design is equalled by the care and precision that went into the manufacture. It just feels solid and well-built.

My biggest concern was that the extra buttons would interfere with normal usage. Logitech put them in places such that I've never hit one by mistake and even found them to increase my efficiency. So far, I only use a couple, but they're all pre-defined to speed up common tasks usually requiring keystrokes. My favorite button is the one just above the thumb rest that defaults to a "back" button for web browsing.

The base is so easy to use, just drop it in and a little green light flashes discretely to let you know it's charging. It typically charges in an hour or less and gives a little on-screen notice when the battery level runs low. Battery life has been great as well, only running out the time I used it two days straight without a charge. It ships with NiMH rechargable AA batteries, so they'll last longer and be easier to find later.

I've moved the base all around my desk looking for the perfect place, and despite Logitech's recommendation not to place it within a foot or so of other devices, I've yet to have a problem.

This one beats the many other Microsoft and Logitech mice I've used hands down. If you're looking for anything but your standard-issue mouse, spend a little more and you'll thank yourself later! I expect mine will last a lot longer than my current computer.

It is that simple people. BUY THIS MOUSE. Amazon has the best deal going - especially with the rebate. You can't go wrong, and will NOT be sorry. I have been holding out for about 6 months, trying to find a cordless, optical mouse that delivers the performance I was looking for, and at the same time, offer a stylish and QUALITY look and feel. Logitech scores 5 stars in both categories.
Setup was simple on my Dell Dimension with Win XP Pro. Each and every button works like it should, and thanks to another reviewer's idea, I assigned the Quick Switch button to 'Close Program'. It works like a dream!
You can assign one of a LONG list of functions to any button (yes, you die-hard thumb double-clickers will love this).
The movement is 100% precise, and I have experienced zero lag, drag, quiver, or ANYTHING. I even put the base right next to the computer itself, and I have no interference.
You will be overjoyed with the pleasure and ease of use this mouse offers up.

Congratulations to Logitech for delivering a superior product and crushing the competition on looks, style, functionality and performance.

By A Customer
This review is from: Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) (Personal Computers)
Pros:
Excellent Tracking
Nice weight & feel to the mouse
Plenty of functional buttons
Rechargeable, but...

Cons:
Rechargeable battery only lasts a few days before forcing a recharge. Logitech cordless mice using Alkaline batteries last for months...
If you don't remember to place the mouse in the base every night, you might return to find a dead mouse the next day.
Some of the new buttons on top are not easy to press without having to take your hand off of the mouse.
