It was odd "reviewing" this... as it's a replacement part for a larger system, and thus it's sort of strange, trying to not review the top-level system along with the replacement component.

So... let's do both. The Logitech Z-5500 speaker system is a TERRIFIC 5.1 speaker system, providing outstanding "computer-focused" surround sound for games and in-office-media-playback. However, it has a few design defects and quality issues.

My first control pod failed while the unit was still under warranty. I sent it back and Logitech sent me a replacement. The second one still functions, but the backlighting no longer works (making the display nearly unreadable in low-light conditions) and the display itself occasionally stops working entirely.

The reason for this is simply that the internal electronics overheat... sufficiently so that the surface-mount components on the board can "migrate" over time, if allowed to become warm. The little LEDS are usually the first thing to "float off" of their surface-mount pads, while the display follows suit soon afterwards, and finally the two large integrated circuits (at which point the unit ceases to work at all).

The problem is that there are only a few vents on the rear of the unit, and that surface is slanted so that there is no real way to get air circulation through the enclosure.

The easiest solution (for a NEW UNIT) will be to disassemble it and drill a pattern of small holes on the upper and lower faces of the control box. Air will then move through the unit through natural convection, and this may well be sufficient to prevent the ongoing failures so many users have experienced.

My original control unit for a Z5500 speaker let it's smoke out a few months ago and was dead after about 5 years service. Since the speakers are no longer produced I expected that I would have a hard time finding a replacement control unit. Doing an on-line search turned up a lot of used parts most of which were non-functional but also turned up this seller who apparently has a stock of new replacement control units for the Z5500. So I ordered one.

Received this yesterday evening and hooked it up. Out of the box everything works. The only issue is that the control knob/dial was pushed on a little to far and robbed slightly the body of the controller. This was easy to fix and was a very minor issue but it is the reason that I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 stars. Otherwise it worked perfectly right out of the box and I am a happy camper to have these speakers working again.

One note for those who might need to replace an existing dead control unit for a Z5500. There are apparently two different control units that appear to be the same other than the PID number on the sticker on the back of the control unit. The PID numbers don't have to match but you must make sure that you are using a PID number that is compatible with your speakers. So if your existing unit has a PID number less than R637 you can use any other control unit with a PID number of R637 or less.

My Z-5500 died a few years ago and I attempted to have it fixed but I was told that the control pod was the issue. It was great to find that replacement pods are available. It works just like the original. Just plug it in the D-SUB connector and turn on the power.

Advice to buyers - take important note of the PID of your current unit and make sure that it falls in the range of compatible PIDs stated in the product description. The vendor that sold me the product originally sent me the wrong PID number and as expected, it did not work with my unit. When the correct replacement was sent, it worked flawlessly.
