5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic mouse!
I can't believe no one else has reviewed this mouse yet! I purchased the blue mouse, because well, blue is my favorite color. The MX 510 is fantastic- I love the placement of the buttons, and the auto-scroll buttons are especially handy in those situations where you have a very long document and the wheel button is too annoying to use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good mouse overall
This mouse works really well, it is fairly ergonomic. The only problem is that my hand is not that big, so the mouse does seem a tad bit big for me to become totally comfortable. When I do regular work, the mouse is great... but when I game, that is when I wish the mouse was just a tad bit smaller. My thumb can not reach the "forward" button on the side. It reaches...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic mouse!, July 2, 2004

I can't believe no one else has reviewed this mouse yet! I purchased the blue mouse, because well, blue is my favorite color. The MX 510 is fantastic- I love the placement of the buttons, and the auto-scroll buttons are especially handy in those situations where you have a very long document and the wheel button is too annoying to use.

The paint job on this mouse is amazing, no to mention that each paintjob is unique for every mouse. Overall, the mouse is surprisingly large, but it's comfortable and fits my hand well. Great buy!

So, I finally had a chance to test out the mouse. Wow, I used to use an old trackball, and this new one beats the living daylights out of it. It's TOO sensitive; in fact, I had to turn the sensitivity way down in order to shoot more accurately in various FPS games. However, I did not use the side buttons on the mouse for any first person shooter games because these can be hard to reach quickly during intense action moments. However, the big gain in accuracy and tracking is amazing; the fit and finish certainly doesn't hurt, and the mouse feels very solid.

I've been very happy with Logitech products, and this one is certainly a winner! For $40 by Amazon, what are you waiting for! Buy it!!!

I purchased this mouse in blue to match my Saitek Eclipse keyboard, and I received much more than I expected.

First off, if you have always used a mechanical (ball) mouse, it's time to make the switch to optical. You don't need a mouse pad, it feels smoother, and there are no wheels/gears inside to clog up with grime.

Specific to this optical mouse:

--It has five semi-customizable buttons in addition to the normal buttons. I say "semi" customizable because you can set them only to a couple dozen pre-determined functions, including back, forward, cut, copy, paste, close, double-click, explore computer, find, help, maximize, minimize, minimize all, quick switch (from one application to another), run, start, and undo. You can also set a button to "keystroke," meaning ONE key, or control/alt/shift plus one key.

--Out of the box, the two buttons just above where you sit your thumb are set to browser back and forward, which I find to be quite handy. The "forward" button it a bit of a reach, but I don't use forward that often. I have on occassion accidentally hit the "back" button with my thumb, but that is becoming less and less frequent as I get used to the mouse. Two buttons above and below the scroll wheel are set to quick scroll up and down, which I find to be useless since it's no different than using the scroll wheel quickly. I have turned these off for now, because the top button is difficult to reach, and I am often hitting the bottom button by accident when trying to use the scroll wheel (it is VERY close). A button farther below the scroll wheel is set to "quick switch" between programs, which has the same effect as pressing Alt+Tab. I've changed this to "keystroke," and use it for gaming. (I should also mention that the claim that you can switch views "at the touch of a button" is deceptive. When you press the quick switch button, a menu appears with your applications. You must then click on the application to open.)

--There are indentations on the sides of the mouse for your thumb and pinky. The indentation for the pinky drove me insane for about a week, because apparently I do not hold a mouse the way that the designers do. I grip the sides of a mouse with my thumb and ring finger, which makes your ring finger run across the indentation quite uncomfortably. I have had to adjust my grip on the mouse somewhat, but I believe I am now used to it. I would recommend trying the mouse out in a store to see how it fits your hand before purchasing it online.

--The response of the pointer to your mouse movements is quick and precise.

--Stylistically, the mouse looks good and has a nice weight to it.

--The cord is standard length, but it is USB so it is easy to extend via a hub.

Overall, this is a great mouse, especially considering the price. I would try one out in a store if you can find one, but remember that you will probably adjust to anything that feels odd at first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice, March 30, 2009
This review is from: Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse - Blue (Personal Computers)
This is an excellent gaming mouse, along with photo-editing mouse. Anything that you need to be very exact with, or have a bunch of extra buttons that don't get in the way, this is the perfect mouse. It's a bit out-dated now with the MX518 costing about the same and having a higher resolution (I have both), but the only reason I had to upgrade mine was because I wore it out. It took a good six years or better to wear through this beast.

As an ex-semi-pro gamer, and as a semi-professional photoshop user, I wholeheartedly recommend this. Once you use it, you'll never go back to a regular mouse. I never get cramps from using it, nor do I ever accidentally hit the extra side-mouse buttons. It's a great gaming mouse for any type of game (I use it for Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft).

If you just plan on browsing the web, it's quite a bit more than you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome gaming mouse!, July 12, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse - Blue (Personal Computers)
I recently bought this mouse to replace the optical mouse that came with my Dell PC. I wanted the extra buttons for playing World of Warcraft. The mouse is great - it's lightweight, moves well, and points and clicks accurately. It might be a little big for some women to use, but my hands fit a size medium or large womens' glove and the mouse isn't too big for me.

I love being able to map the buttons to specific uses in World of Warcraft. The up and down arrows on the side are now Target Enemy and Target Self; the top button above the wheel is AutoRun, and the others are mostly the default settings. I had a little trouble programming the buttons at first because some of the functions are based on the operating system, not the program, so I had to first change the side buttons to Copy and Paste, and then set Copy and Paste as Target Enemy and Target Self in WoW in order for the buttons to work correctly. The whole process of mapping the buttons to specific functions is really easy though.

I'd totally recommend this mouse to any gamer, web developer, or one-handed person (provided they still have their right hand). Yes, I did say "one-handed person"... I could seriously do my whole job with just this mouse if two of the buttons were mapped to copy and paste. Plus, how can you pass up a BLUE mouse? That's just awsome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hahaha! This thing rocks!, July 10, 2005

Interestingly, this is the mouse that turned me back into a mouse user from trackballs. Before acquiring the MX510, I used a Logitech Marble Mouse. It was extremely precise, but lugging around the trackball to and from school was a real pain. In time, I managed to fling the marble ball across the classroom while trying to extract it from my bag. When I finally recovered the ball two days later, I found several nicks in the ball that didn't allow it to run smoothly anymore. After this little incident, it was time for a change.

I found the MX510 at CompUSA and purchased it on a whim, as I've never heard of the MX optical engine in my entire life. It had a rebate attached, and this lowered the price sufficently that I could afford it sans sticker shock. As soon as I took it home, I marveled first at how nicely it fit my hand. The sculpted shape fits marvelously, spectacularly in my hand. I actually find any other mouse awkward after using the MX for a period of time.

The MX Optical Engine is not hype. IT WORKS! When they say "NO LAG" they mean it. Unlike my Logitech Optical Black USB Mouse, it kept up effortlessly in Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, and I did better with it than any other mouse or trackball!

For real work though, you can't go wrong with the MX510. The cruise control is very efficient, but needs to be fine tuned by the user, or it will be either too fast or too agonizingly slow in scrolling. I switched the function of the Application Quick Switch button to "Minimize All" in Logitech's MouseWare so as to hide any web surfing from my teachers. (Please don't tell) And the web back/forward buttons are invaluable; you'll find yourself looking for them if you ever do change back to another mouse.

Honestly, the only fault I can find with this mouse is that it's corded...If they had a mini-transceiver version of the MX500-series with perhaps a Fast RF system, it would be near perfect. I know they have the MX700 and MX900, but these are designed with monolithic transceiver/charger bases that are not at all suited to mobile use. If only...

I have sadly relegated my MX510 to home duty in the name of mobile freedom, but it is hands-down the best mouse I've ever had. Bar none.

It reaches the "back" button just fine. I set the mouse to double-click with the "scroll" button, but it doesn't work when I play games. The "up" and "down" scroll buttons are sort of awkward to use if you are trying to work fast.

All-in-all, I would say this is a great mouse if my hand was just a bit bigger with longer fingers. I guess a big hand would love this mouse, but I would wager that the buttons will be a tad bit difficult to control even then. This mouse is very accurate, the infrared doesn't miss a beat.

Would I buy this mouse again? If it was a little smaller, absolutely, yes.... the surface design is hard to beat. I still would not consider this the "ultimate" mouse as I had originally though it would be. I am a owner of two of their "Gaming Mouse" from years back, it's too bad they don't offer infrared mouses for those three button design (they didn't come with scroll wheels).

5.0 out of 5 stars Logitech MX510 is the Real Deal, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse - Blue (Personal Computers)
I have owned this mouse (in red) for three years now, and almost every time I put my hand on it I'm reminded of how lucky I am to be working with the best mouse I've ever used. I've been working with the eight buttons for so long that I hate using the useless mice I work with at my job. With this mouse, and the ways you can set it up, you only need a space the size of about a silver dollar to cover an entire 19" monitor, plus perform a variety of functions directly from the mouse.

Not only that, but with two users on my personal computer, my wife's settings are completely independent and to her liking. The weight and feel of this mouse is perfect, and I have become so adept at working directly from the mouse that it is almost unfathomable for me to consider anything less. Factor in the great price and awesome design, and I couldn't recommend anthing else. Keep in mind that I bought mine new for around [...] bucks, so anyone who tries to sell a used one for [...] bucks is probably trying to rip you off. Plus, if you are buying a used one, make sure you are getting the original software so you can customize everything to your liking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than ever but not quite perfect, March 4, 2005
This review is from: Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse - Blue (Personal Computers)
This is an awesome mouse, the availability of extra programmable buttons is really handy and it is very easy to use. My only problem is that buttons programability is limited to a single keystroke or key combination. What I was hoping for was to program a single button for tasks like Ctrl-A followed by Delete. But the only way to do it was to program two buttons. Now don't get me wrong, being able to do all of that extra stuff from the mouse and not having to reach for the keyboard is a huge time saver, but hey, I'd like doing it all with a single click twice as much. Let's face it, it's the best bang for the buck! And hope that some day, the software will be upgraded to accomplish even more with even less effort.

2.0 out of 5 stars No durability, October 14, 2005
This review is from: Logitech MX 510 Performance Optical Gaming Mouse - Blue (Personal Computers)
I own both the mx518 and the mx1000. While I otherwise like the design and performance, on every single mouse on both models, the left click button will fail, either gradually or suddenly. I game heavily so I really work that button. I have swapped out several times on both models with the same result. Within 60 to 90 days, the left click button will fail. Be forewarned about this aspect.
