5.0 out of 5 stars Value for money., September 26, 2006
This review is from: Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPods (Black) (Electronics)
I was seriously considering getting the Bose SoundDock; my friend has it and sounds great. It's obvious problem is portability and since I travel a lot the Bose was not the most practical option. I was about to buy the JBL On-Stage until I came across the Logitech MM50. Apparently JBL had to recall some of their speakers and that does not augur well for the image of the product even if they claim they have solved the problem.

The mm50 is a well-designed, well thought-out product. Right out of the box, there is a black carrying case in which the speakers and its remote easily fit. I've found that on most products the battery life is over-stated. Surprisingly, this is not the case with the mm50. Besides the battery (which the Bose and JBL lack) makes this a winner.

But of-course, the key factor is sound. Admittedly, the sound is not as good as the Bose. My collection of Bach and Mozart is rather limited - if you listen exclusively or mostly to classical music, perhaps you can sacrifice the portability and get the Bose or even the new Klipsch. The sound is clear and for such a small set of speakers really loud. Both my immediate neighbours have asked me to stop playing music at 5 am.

For this price, I was kind of surprised to find a remote. The remote is strictly serviceable and by no means cutting-edge. They seem to have placed the sensor in a not-so-smart position. Perhaps they added the remote as an after-thought.

Of course, it also charges the Ipod and you can sync it directly with the PC through the speakers itself. Another nice touch is the ability of add another music player if you want - like ur DiscMan or another MP3 player. The cables for these are not provided, but you can get a regular line in cable for like 2 bucks at a RadioShack.

It also came with all sorts of holders to make sure your Ipod fits in - I have a 3G and a 5G Video - and have tried a friend's Ipod Mini. All fit and work correctly. I am pretty sure the Nano also works - but that should be double-checked.

On the cons side - while it does look cool, it is not as uber as the Klipsch and the Bose. I personally never liked the way the On-stage looked (seemed a bit corny) but that is relative to one's tastes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best iPod Portable Speaker System for the Money, December 10, 2006
This review is from: Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPods (Black) (Electronics)
I have been waiting to purchase the ideal portable speaker system for iPod. Then the mm50 happened. Oh sure, it doesn't sound quite like the Bose, however, it's one-third the price of the Bose. I have wanted something that is very portable and has crystal clear sound that would satisfy my finicky, audiophile ears. I have not been satisfied with the Altec Lansing systems (they sound like tin cans), and the Bose is way too expensive and not-so-portable.

Enter the mm50. The unit looks really cool, and the speakers even have a certain look that pleases you before you even hear it. But the sound is what sold me. It doesn't crank really loud, nor does it have a boom-boom bass capability, but it delivers big sound from a very little box. The midrange and highs are phenomenal, making vocals, percussion, and acoustic guitar come alive. It also has a "3D stereo" option that "widens" the sound, and it really works. This option is especially great for listening to classical. A friend of mine walked into my kitchen, heard the player going and noted, "Wow, that sounds like live music!" That's because it really delivers with clarity.

This unit is really small, and it folds up in seconds, and fits into its very nice zippered case. I use it at the office and in the kitchen, or working in my home office. It also comes with a remote. In fact, the mm50 also has a rechargeable battery. Warning: note that the battery, once it dies, is not replaceable, thus making the unit a plug-in only once the battery life is gone. My guess is that there is plenty of life to be had from the battery, making it well worth the money. The unit also comes with several adaptors so you can use it with any type of iPod.

What a great, new product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by musician who is very particular about sound quality, January 5, 2007

This review is from: Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPods (Black) (Electronics)
I looked at a lot of iPod portable speakers in many different price ranges while I was shopping for a gift. In the back of my mind, I also had getting a set for me down the road. I checked out all the big name brands and a lot of other ones at lower price points. What I found was that for the money, this was the best deal and a good deal at any price point.

These speakers look good and work with several different types of iPod including the Nano. The bass sound is excellent and there is sufficient volume without distortion for even a 10 x 20 room. However, I think the stereo speakers are at their best in a 10 x 12 room or smaller. The 3D sound feature does indeed enhance the overall sound experience and productions of high, middle and low frequencies is excellent at all volume levels. You can also turn the volume up quite high before you notice appreciable distortion.

I listen to classical, jazz, rock and many other genres of music. These speakers do a good job with the challenges of each of these areas of music including the human voice. While there are built-in limitations to an iPod file compared to other recorded media, these speakers deliver at a half to a third of the price of some very famous brands.

There is also a smaller version of these speakers. They are decent for a small room and very good for a young person. I bought this particular system for a gift as well and one of the purchasing criteria is that it woiuld not be too loud and carry far into other rooms. The bass is not as good on the lower model, but it's still decent and certainly good for background music at low volumes in smaller rooms.

3.0 out of 5 stars One other caveat concerning Logitech Speakers, January 19, 2008

I have had these speakers for some time now and, out of curiosity, decided to see what other people thought. Admittedly I did not read every review here, but one annoying aspect concerning these speakers has not garnered the attention it deserves. I listen to Classical music and one constant problem is that the speaker amplification does not have enough power to remain on during quieter moments in the music. If the decible level drops for a minute or two, then you will find yourself needing to restart the speakers, unless you quickly boost the volume before it shuts down. Listening to Jazz can cause the speakers to shut down during an extended bass solo. It is an extremely annoying listening experience.

The sound is good for the price paid and I have not had the battery problems that others have reported, but the decible level issue is enough for me to give it a mild recommendation with a major reservation.

I am generally happy with these speakers. I used them for dance practice in a very large room and they were easily audible even across the room. Some occasional distortion at top volume, but fine for my purposes. The battery held out for quite a long time before needing a recharge, and the remote was generally effective up to, say, 10-15 feet away. Didn't try farther. Very nice zippered case with a pocket for the remote, and a good supply of adapters for various sized iPods.

There is one thing to note in the fine print: the rechargeable battery CANNOT be replaced. Once the battery is wasted, so is the whole the device. It remains to be seen how long this will take.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little speaker system !!!, November 22, 2006
This review is from: Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPods (Black) (Electronics)
First off, look at what your buying. A small compact speaker system. Everyone has their own opinion but you have to be realistic. This is NOT a replacement for your home stereo. Yes, even a good pc speaker system with subwoofer might sound better but their not portable! You have to keep in mind the size of this thing. Small, very small. Which is exactly what I wanted. I wanted something small to set on my kitchen counter, but yet sound good. This is perfect! It only sticks out 4" when against the backsplash. It's 13" long. Sits nicely on the counter without taking up valuable space. As far as the sound quality goes I was not expecting much from a small package. Well, it suprised me. Keep in mind it's size. It sounds great!!! Does it have the bass of a subwoofer system? No. Does it go really loud like my stereo? No. But for it's size it has excellent sound and goes loud enough that I do not need to turn it up all the way. At half volume you can have a conversation but at full volume your jammin on small scale. Depending on the song, most of them I have play at full volume without distortion. Most little speaker systems distort very quickly. The built in batteries are a great feature. I like to take it into the bathroom when I shower. Not sure how long they will last, still to new. I have played it for 4 hours so far without charging it. The remote control is small and has basic functions.

Bottom line...I am happy with my purchase! For it's size it really does sound nice. In fact it sounds better than I ever expected with such small drivers. As far as price goes, it's better than spending $300 for the Bose system. No, I'm not saying it sounds better than Bose!! I just didn't want to fork out $300 for it, plus it's bigger.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning... These Speakers DO NOT Work With Any Nano Sold Today!, December 16, 2007
This review is from: Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPods (Black) (Electronics)
These speakers produce fairly decent sound, but they DO NOT work with any I-Pod Nano being sold today. They are great for the old Nano, but not the new (3rd generation) Nano. None of the current adapters that accompany these speakers work. Some might suggest that you can use the thin plate, but that is a terrible solution for two reasons:

1) The thin plate doesn't provide support to the back of the Nano. In other words, there's space between the front of the plate and the back of the Nano. What this means is that you'd be flexing the connector a little bit every time you fiddled with the Nano controls when it's docked. The Nano just kind of hangs out there in mid-air on the tinny little connector at the bottom. Eventually it would break off.

2) It's almost impossible to get the new 3rd Generation Nano OUT of the dock because the new Nano sits all the way down into the slot - unlike the taller older Nanos. There's simply no way to get a grip on it to pull it out. You can't grip the sides of the Nano, because there's not enough space to get your fingers in there. The ONLY way to get it out is to stick your finger BEHIND the Nano (and to do that you must REALLY flex the connector). So the thin adapter plate DOES NOT work. No way - no how. I tried.

I contacted Logitech tech support via their forum. Someone else had already posted about this issue. He got bogus information, posted back, and was ignored. So I posted a follow-up. Their tech support person said he'd check, and that it might take a couple days... that was weeks ago and there has been complete silence since then. So beware of anything Logitech says on this issue. They appear to be trying to leave the impression that these speakers work with the Nanos being sold today. Trust me... they don't.

Bottom line... these speakers are NOT compatible with the new 3rd generation Nano (the only Nano being sold today). I was very surprised to see that these speakers are listed on Apple's site as being compatible with the third generation Nanos. They aren't.

I got the ipod speakers, and initially loved it. Thought it was the greatest thing. You could take it with you and it could play off of battery. After a couple weeks, we noticed it would not keep its charge. As soon as we unplugged it from the wall, it would shut off. So we sent it back and Amazon sent another one. The same thing ended up happening. I am disappointed in the fact it cannot be played w/o power from wall. Be careful about the battery life on this thing. For me.....it was about 2 weeks on 2 different ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow....., September 15, 2006
This review is from: Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPods (Black) (Electronics)
Wow, these speakers have BEAUTIFUL sound. It is rich, loud and clear. It could use a little extra bass but for this size, what do you expect? They still have great bass, just don't expect floor-rumbling bass. They are great for around-the-house use and outdoors.... the included remote, case, and rechargeable battery were unexpected extras for me..... these speakers retail for $149.99 but thanks to Amazon I recieved them for $120 4 days after I ordered them, GREAT SERVICE.

If you are looking for great speakers that wont have you waste a small fortune on batteries, go for these!
