G9x vs G9? Worth the upgrade?,
By
This review is from: Logitech G9X Programmable Laser Gaming Mouse with Precision Grips (Personal Computers)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As a matter of review disclosure, I received the G9x as part of Amazon Vine.
I own a G9 and wrote a prior review for it, indicating it was a fine game mouse which includes a corded laser driven sensor system, on board customizable memory, a cool weight addition system which is not a gimmick--I definitely have a preference for a heavy mouse, customizable LED colors, and a nice scroll wheel. The two changeable grips are great -- you will probably have a preference for one or the other depending on how you use your mouse. The G9 is a nicely constructed, accurate, pleasure to use, feature heavy game mouse, and fully capable of use in any application including games. But, this is not a review on the G9, but rather the G9x... or is it? The G9x is exactly the same mouse, with exactly the same construction and feature set, except for one thing.... let me quote the Logitech feature blurbs: First, for the G9x, "the G9x extends the promise of the award-winning Logitech G9 Laser Mouse with its next-generation laser sensor... On-the-fly adjustable dpi to go from pixel-precise targeting (200 dpi) to lightning-fast maneuvers (up to 5000 dpi)." And for the G9, "Get uncompromised speed and accuracy from a high-performance Gaming-Grade Laser Engine (adjustable 200 dpi - 3200 dpi)" This apparently is the only difference. An increase from 3200 dpi max for the G9 up to 5000 dpi for the G9x. My own max speed for playing games without too much twitching is 2500 dpi, and most often I prefer lower speeds. I would never realize the full speed of the G9x, just as I have not realized the full speed of the G9. I do not notice any functional differences playing Crysis, Call of Duty 4, F.E.A.R. series, Fallout 3, or any other fast paced games. I love both of these mice, but I have to ask the question, at about $60 for the G9, and $100 for the G9x, is the G9x worth another $40 over the G9? I guess if you do the math, 5000 dpi over 3200 dpi is a 56% increase in speed. The $40 premium for the G9x is 66% over the prior price for the G9. You can make your own decision, but I think the price point for this new mouse is higher than it should be. The G9 and G9x are great mice. Buy whichever one is cheaper, they are exactly the same, and provide exactly the same general features, except for max dpi.

Logitech G9x,
By MaximumPC (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech G9X Programmable Laser Gaming Mouse with Precision Grips (Personal Computers)
When we first reviewed the original Logitech G9 (November 2007), we didn't like it. Specifically, we thought it was uncomfortable to hold, using either of the removable shells. In fact, we described it as "not particularly comfortable for day-to-day mousing" before complaining that it was unsuitable for people who use a traditional palming grip.
We were wrong. After we made a few small adjustments to our grip, we fell in love with the G9--at least when using the grippy palm-friendly Precision body. We still don't like the smooth grip--dubbed Wide Load--and we're generally not fans of having to adjust our grip to suit a mouse, but the smooth response and power-gamer-friendly features that the G9x delivers make this mouse the best we've ever tested. The Logitech G9x upgrades the mouse's sensor, but the rest of the mouse stays the same. For the most part, the G9x and the original G9 are identical. The removable shells are the same, the internal weighting system accommodates up to 28 grams of weight, the onboard memory stores up to five profiles, and the scroll wheel switches between crazy-fast click-free scrolling to a more traditional click-to-click scroll at the press of a button. The only difference between the original G9 and the new G9x is its enhanced laser sensor. Replacing the original G9's variable-sensitivity, 3,200dpi laser sensor is a 5,000dpi laser sensor, for true twitch gamers. At the highest sensitivity settings, moving the mouse a fraction of an inch will blast the cursor across the screen--giving you an edge in fast-paced shooters or RTS games where you need to cover a lot of ground quickly. Want to slow it down for a little sniping? Crank the mouse down as low as 200dpi on the fly, using the sensitivity adjustment buttons directly below the left mouse button. The mouse updates Windows up to 1,000 times per second, for accurate cursor movement no matter how fast you move it. In its naked, shell-off form, you can see the G9x's removable weight tray. Whether you prefer a light or heavy rodent, you can have it your way. As before, we love the G9x's profile feature, which lets you switch between pre-configured profiles on the fly on any PC, whether you have Logitech's software installed or not (you will need to have Logitech's software installed to configure the profiles initially, though). The on-mouse LEDs change color based on the profile you're using, so you won't accidentally find yourself in your RTS shooter profile when you fire up Left 4 Dead. As with the G9, the seams between the G9x's removable shells and the main mouse body get pretty crusty over a long period of time. But everything else about this mouse--from the braided cord to its pair of thumb buttons--is awesome. + The best sensor we've ever tested. On-the-fly sensitivity adjustment. Driver-less profiles. - The satiny texture of the Wide Load shell gets sweaty & gross after long sessions. Verdict: 10 out of 10

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I love the Logitech G9x laser mouse. I've had mine for about ten days now, and my computing--OK, let's be honest here--my gaming has become so much more convenient and easier.
My previous gaming mouse was the Logitech MX-518, which is in of itself a good gaming mouse. That has eight buttons, all of which can be programmed using the Logitech driver software to perform various functions, or to act as a keyboard press. The G9x takes all that one step further by enabling macro programming of keystrokes and mouse clicks. So you can assign your most-often used sequence of keystrokes and mouse clicks to a macro, and assign the macro to one nine customizable buttons on the mouse, and presto! The Logitech SetPoint driver software that runs the mouse is pretty slick, too. It makes recording macros easy, and the management of different button assignment profiles seamless. You can store three such settings on the mouse's onboard memory, presumably so that you can take the mouse to a different computer and still be able to use those three profiles, as long as the mouse driver is installed on that other computer. You can also have as many local profiles (that is, not stored on the mouse but on the computer's hard drive) as you want. This profile makes switching between games and regular Windows use/internet surfing very convenient. For example, my gaming profile is triggered when the game's executable is the active window (or running fullscreen). When I alt-tab out to Windows' desktop, the general profile--the one used for everyday mouse use--is triggered. When I go back to the game, the gaming profile takes over. Very easy, intuitive, and handy. The LED lights on the mouse body, which can be used to indicate the DPI sensitivity, can also be programmed to show different light for different profiles, so that you can tell at a glance which profile the mouse is operating under. The mouse uses infrared sensor (not visible to the naked eye), rather than the usual red LED light, to tract motion with greater accuracy. The nine buttons (three traditional left, right, and scroll wheel click buttons, two on the left thumb side, two below the three traditional buttons, and the scroll wheel button can be clicked left and right) are positioned for comfort and ease of access. I never knew what I was missing until I started using the left and right scroll wheel button. So convenient! The G9x also comes with a set of eight weights to add heft to the mouse to your heart's content. You can have up to four weights in the weight tray, and the mouse comes with four 4g pieces and four 7g pieces. I've got mine configured with four 4g weights and it feels just fine. The mouse ships with two shells. The default one has smooth surface and is a bit wider than the other one, which has a rough(er) surface and a tad bit narrower. The cord is braided type that does not catch or snag nowhere nearly as much as the usual plastic cable. My only gripe with the mouse is the insensitivity of the scroll wheel button for down-clicking. Left- and right-click on the scroll wheel button is just fine, but the down-click takes surprising amount of force to the point of being slightly uncomfortable. It's quite possible that this is an isolated case with my particular copy. If this weren't a Vine review copy, I'd have returned it and requested a replacement. All in all, it's a fantastic mouse, well worth the money if you spend any time gaming. Also great for every day use, but it really shines when it comes to gaming for its customizability and smooth usage. Highly recommended!

I have owned a Logitech G5 mouse for about three years and have been very pleased. It is getting a little worn so I decided to buy a new one. I checked and found the G9X, which I assumed was a later, better model. I hesitated at the $98.21 price, but I wanted the best. I assumed it worked and felt like my G5. It is a beautiful mouse, and everything worked as expected, even though the cursor was a little unstable at the highest accelerations, but the feel is completely different. I tried it for two days, hoping I could adjust, but tonight, I realized that I would permanently damage my wrist if I didn't stop using it. I have been using mice since I bought a Mac in 1984, and this is the first mouse that I could not use. It forces me to bend my hand at an unusual angle. If you want a great gaming mouse, check this out, but test it first before you buy it, or you will be returning it for a refund minus the shipping like me.

In appearance and feel, there is not much difference between this gaming mouse and the G9 gaming mouse. However, you can adjust the sensitivity of the mouse for gaming by creating up to five mouse profiles and you can determine the sensitivity you want, so your arrow can zip across your screen super-fast or go slower, depending on what kind of game you are involved in. The G9X has the enhanced laser which makes for more accurate gaming. Once you have that under control, your gaming precision is sure to get faster and more accurate.
As far as simply being a good mouse, it still has great features. Like the G9, there is a choice between a wider or thinner mouse grip. (I use the wider one as my hands are large and I have always had trouble with thinner mice). Plus, you can add weight to the mouse (up to 28 g), which is something I had never thought would be such a great advantage until I used it. The bulk and the sensitivity really improve handling. The scroll wheel can be adjusted to either a smooth or a click response (I prefer the click). Just the velvety feel and the wider grip make a huge difference. This might seem minor, but the cord is braided which makes it easy to distinguish when plugging and unplugging in the back of my desktop. In short, this version of gaming mouse is better than the G9 since it contains the gaming profiles and the enhanced laser (in software installation).

Great Mouse but Breaks Early,
This review is from: Logitech G9X Programmable Laser Gaming Mouse with Precision Grips (Personal Computers)
I bought this based on the reviews as it was a very highly rated gaming mouse. I was not disappointed. All that people raved about was true so my ratings reflect those attributes in those areas.
However....the mouse wire is some sort of cloth covered very stiff item I have not seen since the British cars of the 1950s. There is a reason they don't use wires like this anymore. The stiff mouse wire broke inside its casing right at the mouse within 7 months. No amount of work I could do could fix it. If you want a great mouse for a very limited amount of time then it is a great value. If you want a great mouse that works much longer then buy another Logitech mouse that has a rubber coated wire that easily bends.

I must admit something: I am a mouse and keyboard addict. I am an avid PC gamer and have owned nearly every gaming grade mouse and keyboard on the market for the past ten years. I also obsessively follow the market for new and improved units. A good, innovative and cool input device just excites me. I can't believe I just said that - but it's true. All of my obsessing, searching and trying out various gaming grade mouse offerings has lead to one conclusion - the Logitech G9X Laser Mouse is the best overall gaming grade mouse on the market - period.I owned the original G9 mouse and loved it. So when a "new and improved" version hit the market, I couldn't resist picking it up. To be specific, I purchased my first G9X about two years ago when I upgraded my gaming rig. At that time - as usual - I went through all of the offerings from Razer, Saitek, Cyborg, Steel Series and the various Logitech models. That G9X has served me well but started to show some serious wear and tear. Also - like I said - I am addicted to buying new input devices whether I really need them or not. So once again plunged into the gaming grade mouse market. This most recent foray took me to three different units. First I tried the Logitech Wireless G700 Gaming Mouse. I should have known from the start that this wouldn't be for me. I am one of those old school gamers that still pretends to feel lag from wireless units. Also, the G700 seemed to "float" on me when I needed it to be absolutely still. Then I tried the Cyborg R.A.T. 7 gaming mouse. Like others, I was thrilled with the level of customization that this mouse offered. But - in the end - all of those options had unfulfilled promise and tragic flaws. Also, the mouse wheel - which is a critical part for me - felt cheap and slow. I intend to write full reviews of these units later. But for now, suffice it to say that they are all solid units but all were also ultimately returned to Amazon. To make a long story short, all of this brought me full circle and I purchased another G9X. Here is what I like most about this mouse that makes it simply the best gaming grade unit on the market. First, it is a comfortable mouse. I don't know much about ergonomics, but my hand does not get tired gripping the mouse and always feels in a natural position when using it. The two grips will cover any hand size and the textures are both pleasant to the touch. Second, when the mouse has no weights in it, it is very light. I have a tendency to lift my mouse when gaming, so a unit that is too heavy tires me out. The G9X is the perfect weight. Third, this mouse tracks flawlessly. With all of the other units I have tried they either jumped, floated or decelerated too much. The G9X is consistently tracks with total precision - rock solid when it is still and just as fast as you want it to be when in motion. Finally, the scroll wheel is a gift from heaven. This is the one feature that I simply cannot live without. It is so fast and so smooth that it changes the way you I approach and use the computer. Logitech must have patents on the technology because no other mouse has a smooth scrolling wheel like the Logitech. With the other units I tried, I found myself pining away for that smooth, fast wheel. And with a push of a button, it converts into a traditional scroll wheel for those who want it. As with anything, the G9X does have a few flaws. The feet tend to wear out and lose their smoothness. After getting my new unit, I really noticed how much smoother it sped across my Zowie mouse pad (also highly recommended by the way). I wish that you could buy just the feet and replace them. It could use a few more buttons. There are no buttons on the right side of the mouse and only the traditional two on the left side. Modern games simply require at least eight buttons. Also, I don't like that the profile and microgear buttons on the bottom of the mouse. I wish they were on the top as with the Cyborg R.A.T. Finally, there is no real "Wow" factor with this mouse. It is pretty bare-bones in comparison with the competition. In the end, I ran through the reviews, narrowed down my list and tried the three best offerings I could find. This all brought me back where I began - to the Logitech G9X. So, if you are odd like me and get really excited over a good input device, this should make your heart race. I highly recommend it. For those who don't want the long-winded version, here is a list of pros and cons for this unit. Pros: - The best scroll wheel ever made. It has no equal. - Great size and texture. - Perfect tracking. - DPI changing on-the-fly. - Light weight. - Long, high quality braided cord. Cons: - Feet wear out and get gritty. Can't replace just the feet. - Not enough buttons. - Profile and microgear buttons are on the bottom. - No real "Wow" factor. PS: This unit has been out for over two years now. I expect Logitech to release a new version or an entirely new wired mouse soon. Isn't that exciting! :)

Before buying this mouse, I had been using the same Microsoft Optical Blue mouse for nearly 9 years. To be honest, the conversion after using the same mouse was slightly unpleasant. But, after having been using this mouse for nearly a week now, I have come to really appreciate what it offers.
The games I play are Team Fortress 2, Star Craft II, and Counter Strike, and it is easy for me to say that this mouse has made me more competitive. Whats changed? -On the fly sensitivity control has opened the door to playing Sniper on TF2, a class that I was never good at. To be able to go from a high DPI for a class like Pyro or Scout, to low DPIs for Sniper has given me the ability to conquer nearly every hurdle that came with the lack of control I felt with my old mouse. -The scroll wheel is soooo nice, there are no worries about loosing control when it's not in free wheel mode. This may be a small detail, but it's the small details that make the deal so much sweeter. -The weights and the pads on the the bottom of the mouse let you control how much lift resistance you want, and slide beautifully on either your desk or mouse pad. (I'm using an older cloth mouse pad, and it works great.) -Lastly, the body choices where just perfect for ME. There are 2 bodies or "skins" I guess that can be changed out depending on how you want to rest your hand on the mouse. I have found that the second body that came in the box was very well suited for my claw/pinching mouse gaming style. But the original body does seem well suited for a palm player I would assume. There are other features, such as onboard programmable macros that can be made on the computer, but I have yet to try that out. There is also the feature with which you can change the color of the sensitivity lights on the mouse, which is cool, but its more like icing on the cake. Overall, I'm enjoying this mouse. Would I recommend it to a person who isn't an avid PC gamer? Probably not. This mouse is pricey, and I only picked it up because I thought I could be more competitive playing the games that I enjoy (maybe too much). I hope this review was helpful, and feel free to respond if you have any questions! Thanks.

I'm a fingertip/claw grip type user, and this mouse fits my usage well.
When I was in the market for a gaming mouse, I compared G9x, G500 as well as the Razer Deathadder 3500dpi ver. Then I narrowed it down to the deathadder vs G9x. In the end, I chose the G9x as it offered a superior comfort and button placement for my fingertip grip type. The deathadder was a tad too large and provided awkward finger placements for my tastes. I've previously used a junky $10 3-button Logitech mouse for well over 6 years for gaming, so this mouse is a great step up. The dpi adjustment is simple and effective. I use 3200DPI for general websurfing and 3600DPI during gaming sessions. I think the 5600dpi it offers is cool, but very much unusable for most applications. However, the best part is that you can adjust the dpi ranges by small increments, and save up to 3 profiles INTO the mouse, rather than into the software! Speaking of Logitech's Setpoint2 software, it is very intuitive and offers EVERYTHING and more you need to customize/adjust about this mouse! This is also the place where you can change the LED colors. Of the two grips provided, I do like both. However, the precision grip is what I use during gaming sessions. It is a smaller grip and the thumbrest/ring finger rest area is textured and firm. During webbrowsing sessions, I like to use the slightly larger grip. It offers a better thumbrest as well as larger, easier to press thumb buttons. My only real complain is the scroll wheel. Yes that thing. Like many others have mentioned, it is quite stiff you won't be able to easily press it without firmly gripping the mouse from both sides first. The good news is that you adjust to it over time. Also good news is that if you enable hyperscrolling from the button on the bottom of the mouse, the middle mouse button click becomes alot easier to press. But since the hyperscroll is on, you might mistakenly scroll up/down. A little on the expensive side, but buying used/refurb for half the price is a killer deal! Almost no regrets!

Great Mouse Minor Flaws,
By

This review is from: Logitech G9X Programmable Laser Gaming Mouse with Precision Grips (Personal Computers)
First I have been using this mouse on both Windows and Macintosh computers and have different experiences on both. The only complaint I have is the lack of Mac software other then that I have no complaints.
Comfort: I have a finger tip type grip on mice and for that this mouse is very comfortable, just the right size. Some mice I find too large and others too small this is perfect since the weight can be adjusted not to mention you can change the grips. I find that the precision grip tends to work better for finger tip and claw grip users since it is smaller and can be handled easier with these styles. I feel that the wide load grip would be more suitable to a palm grip user. So in essence this mouse will be comfortable for any user. Performance: Wow, its the first word that comes to mind. Most people look for the highest DPI when picking out a mouse and there is more to it then that but even with just DPI alone this mouse excels. You can set up to 4 different DPI settings per profile it will let you choose down to 200 or up to 5700 and that makes it perfect for gaming when switching from assault weapons to sniping or from web browsing to photoshop. But like I implied there is more then DPI when it comes to performance there is also polling rate. Polling rate is how often the computer asks the mouse where its location is so to speak. Normal mice do this about 200 times a second but with this mouse you can poll at 1000 times a second making it much much better for gaming. Features: I don't even know where to begin. This mouse is completely customizable in the windows software you can setup different profiles for different situations, for example I have one for work ( photoshop etc ) and one for gaming. In these profiles you can setup up to 4 different DPI settings not to mention you can change the LED color on the mouse and you can configure every button to do pretty much anything. The best part is that it saves all this to the mouse's internal memory which means that if you connect this mouse to a computer that does not contain the logitech control center software you can still use the profiles since they are built into the mouse. Complaints: There is no Macintosh software which means that if you don't own a Windows computer you will be unable to configure things like LED color,DPI settings, Polling rate, Button configuration etc etc. This is a large disappointment from logitech as I am sure they have the work force to develop a Mac version of the software. Of course the mouse is still very functional on a Mac so I don't take points away from it for that. Overall: I find that despite the Macintosh problem since everything else is pretty close to perfect that it deserves the full 5 stars. This is a great product and if your thinking of buying it I say go for it. This is by far much better then any other gaming mouse I have used. After playing some first person shouter games with this mouse at 5700 DPI I don't know how I lived with 1200 DPI mouse before. |
