I use these speakers in hotel rooms while traveling with an iPod Classic 160GB. (I have also tested my iPod TOuch and an iPhone, all work with no problems and dock adapters are included). In my opinion, the sound is very good for the size. Don't expect this to rival your home stereo or much larger speaker systems, there's just not a ton of bass or very great highs, which is to be expected from a single, small active driver. Given that there is only one driver though, the sound quality is quite amazing. There's a certain 'coherency' that comes from having one driver which just catches your ear, and this system brings that out. The passive driver helps with providing decent bass response, in my comparison the best in systems of this size. I find sound quality best when I place the system on a desk or nightstand at least 12" back from the edge. I listen for hours without getting that feeling of being worn out by bad sound.
The remote mostly works well, but there does seem to be a slight delay between pushing buttons on the remote and when the function on the iPod is carried out, I would guess about 1/2 second in some cases. Not a big deal when you get used to it. The volume control when used from the remote seems to be quite sensitive. This remote allows you to operate all functions of the iPod using the remote, which is a nice feature, assuming you're able to read the iPod screen from accross the room. There's a 3.5mm (little) headphone jack on the back to which you can plug in another device. I often use this to plug in my laptop, as these speakers are superior to my laptop speakers. by a landslide. (The cable is not included but only costs a few dollars at Amaon or BestBuy) If you want to use your iPod as an alarm clock, you can use this device as your speaker. I have found that in order for that to work reliably it does need to be plugged in to power. After your iPod has been off for a few minutes, the speakers will power down, but they will automatically power back up when your iPod starts playing a song as a result of an alarm. (This is a feature that has been added since the MM-50, which was the previous model on which this did not work) The power adapter is small and has a convenient holder to wrap the cord around. With cord and all, it will fit in the well for the iPod when traveling, and the whole combination, complete with remote, will fit in the included fairly small travel case. (With the predecessor MM-50 the power supply would not store in the case) The functions on the remote have been greatly extended since the MM-50, now you can control anything your iPod can do. The price you pay to do this is the loss of the iPod doc connector at the back of the unit. It used to be possible to plug the audio/video cable in the back of the MM-50, then use the video output to connect to a monitor or TV. Since this connector is not there on this model, you can no longer do that. (Probably for most people this is not a big loss since they simply use the speakers in the TV) The power meter showing battery level is quite useful. It also has an indicator to let you know when outlet power is plugged in, this is useful so you know for sure the internal battery is charging. The claimed battery life of 10 hours is a bit on the optimistic side, of course a lot depends on how loud you play the unit. My experience has been between 3 and 7 hours. While the unit is plugged in, the iPod or iPhone that's connected will be charged. While the unit is running on battery, they will NOT be charged. So make sure you have both your speakers and your iPod charged! I picked this unit after listening to and trying about 30 of them, based on ease of use, travel size, sound quality and its ability to take an input from my laptop. I travel about half the year so it gets frequent use and is carried in carry-on on a plane at least once a week. So far, it has lived and continues to work well.

I've used this unit for approx. a month now. The sturdy case travels well, although it gets a second look from the security folks at the airport scanner. The charging cord and worldwide adaptor are well-designed and fit nicely into the case when closed. It would've been nice to include enough room for the iPod as well. The system is great for the hotel room or camping trip and if you're realistic about the expected sound quality from a pair of 2" drivers, you'll be pleasantly surprised. In addition to the 2" drivers, it has a pair of what Logitech calls "pressure drivers", actually passive radiators that really help push out the bass. The surround sound button adds that extra wide sound, but it's not appropriate for every recording. Logitech ships a set of plastic inserts to accomodate EVERY iPod out there. I have the 80GB classic video, and it docks nicely, although you don't want to bump it too hard or you may damage the connector. The fold out legs with rubber feet make it stable. The 3.5mm AUX line in is nice for those other audio sources. Battery life is decent, but don't expect it to pound out the tunes all weekend w/o a recharge. In the hotel or at home, just plug it in and you'll have tunes as long as you need them, and it'll charge the iPod while docked. The included remote is really handy, well laid out and has a good range. The Altec Lansing and Bose units sound better, but are much bulkier and definitely pricier. All in all a good improvement to the MM50 system for the money.

Great upgrade to the MM50,
This review is from: Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere Compact Speakers for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I have the Logitech MM50 and I have been very happy with that product. There are two annoying things about that product, the battery life is not all that great and the power adapter has no storage within the package.
That's where the the Pure-Fi Anywhere product shines. The battery meter and the ability to stow the power adapter in with the speakers is great. Believe it or not, the sound quality is even better then the MM50's which is very good as well. I haven't been disappointed with either product.

Perfect for My Needs,
By
This review is from: Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere Compact Speakers for iPod (White) (Electronics)
When I learned that my boys need to sell raffle tickets in front of places like Wal-Mart and other grocery stores as a part of their youth symphony membership requirements, I suddenly found myself in need for a portable speaker to play their violin accompaniment pieces. For their first of ongoing sales performances, I borrowed a neighbor's portable CD player. But I didn't want to keep borrowing for future performances, so I decided on purchasing an iPod speaker. I figure it's definitely a better option since I already have an iPod and that CD players are going out of fashion. My criteria for the speaker were:
1) portable and light enough not to be burdensome when carrying it around; 2) has to operate on both battery and AC power; 3) good sound, if not great; 4) good overall reviews from sites like CNet and others; 5) decent pricing; and finally, 6) esthetically pleasing design and construction. When I started researching on the available iPod speakers currently out in the market, I quickly found out that there wasn't one that met all the criteria listed to my fullest satisfaction. If I found one that I liked, it turned out that the unit doesn't operate on battery; if I found another one that caught my attention, then it had bad reviews on sound quality, or exorbitant pricing, etc. etc. Until I paid my attention to Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere. It didn't have the very top reviews of all the iPod speakers out there, but it turned out that most of the negative reviews -- not that there were many -- were based on faulty understanding of the unit's functions, particularly the complaints that the speaker is "weak" when in fact there's a button you need to press for a wider stereo sound. This beautiful find is just perfect for my needs. It's the only product that truly met all of my criteria listed above: 1) it's not only very light and portable, but unlike other products, it comes with a clam shell case that you can store the unit for traveling. The case may not be made of a genuine leather or metal, but I'm very gratified by this nice, considerate touch. 2) For my need to play the unit "Anywhere," this product does exactly that with the rechargeable battery that lasts for 10 hours. Other brands, if they operate on battery power at all, don't last as long, at least on paper. Although the built-in rechargeable battery is not replaceable, I'm happy enough that I'm not going to be too picky. 3) While I was hoping to get a decent sound out of this small unit, I was really impressed and thrilled to find that the sound quality definitely exceeded way beyond my expectations. My ears may be getting old, but I truly couldn't tell a difference between this unit and the $300 Bose that I tested at a local Sam's Club. I was simply wow'ed! 4) This product would have received a much higher rating than the 7.7 that CNet currently has if it weren't for the misunderstanding mentioned above. 5) Spending under $100 for the quality product like this, I think, was a steal. I'm sooooo glad that I didn't pull out my credit card for that Bose at the Sam's Club the other day!! 6) I'm glad that my iPod is white to go with the white version of Anywhere, as I think it looks cleaner (less dust visibility, for one!) to what's already esthetically pleasing design. Lastly, I'd like to mention three other "thoughtfulness" of the product package that I very much appreciated -- apart from the clam shell case: 1) the unit comes with a small and pretty wireless remote to control the power switch, volume level, activate stereo to widen the sound field, navigate the iPod menu and tracks, and adjusting shuffle and repeat. It's not the most perfect remote control I've used, but it's quite functional within 15 ft. I'd have been exceedingly happy even if the unit didn't come with the remote (many other competing brands don't even provide one), so who cares if it doesn't work from two rooms away? 2) The unit comes with a bunch of universal dock adapters to choose yours from. The adapter snugly held my iPod that it wouldn't fall off even when I turned the unit sideways. I think it wouldn't fall off even if you turn the unit upside down, but I'll have you check that out and report back. And finally, 3) the provided AC power adapter is of international voltage (100-240V), a nice touch for those traveling internationally. Furthermore, this AC adapter is designed such that the cord can be neatly wrapped around the base of the adapter itself. When traveling you can tuck the AC adapter into the dock of the speaker unit and then into the clam shell case.

These little babies ROCK!!!,
This review is from: Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere Compact Speakers for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
After researching Ipod speakers for a few months I was sold on the reviews the Altech Lansing speakers received and headed to Best Buy to purchase them. I brought my Ipod with me to test them out and was very disappointed. At low volume, the Altech speakers sounded great but when I cranked it up the sound was muffled and distorted. I looked toward the Bose but $399 was a tad more than I wanted to pay. I glanced at the Logitech Pure-Fi speakers and decided to test those, being Logitech has never let me down before. (My home theatre speakers and wireless speakers are Logitech). Once again...Logitech will ALWAYS have me as a spokesperson for them because these little speakers sound excellent! The sound is as clear as Bose and the Bass you get will shock you. Take your Ipod with you and test them out for yourself.

Amazing sound quality and awesome battery!,

I bought these speakers and was amazed with the quality of the sound that these things put out! You will NOT be disappointed with the volume that these things can produce! I have a pair of awesome Sony speakers with a full stereo system that I hook my computer to through the RCA inputs and that was how I used to listen to my music...I still use them, but these speakers truly rival their quality and are so much more portable, I can put them wherever I am in the room and use the remote to pause, skip, and navigate the iPod! I will have to agree with other reviewers about the limited range of the remote, but it hasn't been anything of paramount importance to me. The battery rocks and the speakers are truly compact...a modern marvel. Great price too!

This is a really nice set of speakers. Great sound, solid bass and treble. The unit is quite small, with little legs that fold out to stand it up. The remote control works well. The case (black, even for the white unit I got) is good quality. The AC adapter cord is one of those nice ones, with the folding plug and a little cord winder for storage. All AC adapters should be designed like this. The unit came with about 10 different adapters for various ipods. We have an old 20GB 3G ipod, which by the way doesn't work in the cradle. You have to buy a cord and use the input jack at the back. Not a huge issue, because we also have a nano that works perfectly in the cradle, but nice to know (same issue apparently for 1G and 2G, which have no cradle). It's about time for an ipod upgrade anyway.

mediocre sound, but great package,

Let's get one thing straight: the sound quality is not good.
If you walked blindfolded into a room where music was playing on these speakers, you'd probably think to yourself "that sounds pretty bad." It's not a good solution for any room where you could set up real (non-portable) speakers. That said, the portability is fantastic. I really like the carrying case, the built-in rechargeable battery, and the remote. It's small and light enough to easily stuff into a backpack. I think the sound quality is better than most of the other portable speakers out there, FWIW.

I am enjoying this enhancement to my ipod experience. Logitech has designed a great travel speaker system that is very portable, but has great sound. The little remote that came with it took a little getting used to, but is handy when you don't want to get out of bed to change the volume or what you're listening to. Highly recommend.

Great portable Ipod Speaker System,
By
This review is from: Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere Compact Speakers for iPod (White) (Electronics)
I have had the speaker system for about a month and love it. It sounds good. It fills the room but not the house with clean sound. The battery charges quickly and lasts me about 6 hours. Higher volume reduces the battery time. The charger works well and the indicator lights are useful to tell when the battery is fully charged and when recharging is needed again. The case is a handy feature for traveling with your speakers.
For the money these are the best portable speakers I have found for the Ipod. The Bose may sound better but at 5 times the cost were not worth it for me. |
