Does anybody *need* to spend $400 on a wireless speaker? Probably not. Is this speaker worth the price? For me the answer is yes and I would like to tell you why.

The speaker sounds great without being overly large. Right now it's sitting comfortably in a seven inch space between the top of a bookcase and the ceiling. Even in that confined space the two rear-facing bass ports are currently doing the Scorpions justice. (At this instant, Rock You Like A Hurricane.) There's also plenty of power and I'll move it out to the deck for our next barbeque.

Setup was a snap. For me it was under 10 minutes from opening the box to music streaming from my phone. (Plug the speaker in and turn it on. Wait a minute. Put you iDevice in the dock. You get prompted to load a free app. Load the free app. That steps you through configuring the speaker for your wireless network. You're done. The app also allows you to set bass/treble and includes detailed instructions for the speaker.) It took another 5 minutes to get iTunes to stream music because it took me 4.5 minutes to find the iTunes Air Play button (located in the lower right corner of the iTunes window). Yep, if I can do it anyone can do it. :) Once "configured" it works seamlessly with my phone, my wife's phone, and iTunes.

The speaker is SOLID. Sure, it's plastic and probably wouldn't survive a fall from a second story window. (Then again, neither would I.) However it is surprisingly heavy for its size and has a very finished look.

Bottom Line: It does what is supposed to do and it does it extremely well. For me, after having a chance to see and hear how well this speaker performs, I can easily justify an additional expense for something I will not want to replace any time soon.

The attached video does not do the Logitech UE Air Speaker justice. The sound is really superb, the bass is deep and rich that anyone will start tapping their feet and fingers to the sound of the music playing. I really wanted to show how easy it is to use the control features using my iPhone 4S.

Imagine getting premium quality sound from something so small - the Logitech Airplay Speaker does just that! The unit itself has a sleek design and will add a distinct flavor of elegance to any decor.

You can enjoy playing your music in a variety of ways. You can pop out dock to connect your iPhone or iPod. You also can use the 3.5 mm auxiliary input for other brand MP3 players (cable is not included). If you use the dock it will also charge your Apple device at the same time. There is plenty of space to dock your device without removing it from a cover or case. Finally my favorite way of using the speaker is by using the Airplay feature via your WiFi network. Once you install the UE Air app (pops up automatically when I connected my iPhone to the speaker's dock) you can control the volume, treble and bass controls directly from your Apple device. Just use the Airplay feature on your Apple device and "wa-la" it is instantly playing on the Logitech Airplay Speaker. This works on all our families Apple products - iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhones. Lets not leave out the iMac and Windows computers that have iTunes installed on them. You just need to verify you have the most current iTunes update (10.6) and you will see the Airplay icon on the lower right hand corner of the iTunes application screen.

Overall this a small speaker that delivers a huge sound. You will be quite impressed, I surely was. Logitech for me has always been a brand that I can rely and trust, they never seem to stop amazing me with what they come up with next. Comes with a one-year warranty.

There are at least a half-dozen reasons why you want this unit:

1 Connects your Apple iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) and iTunes
2 You can connect using an AirPlay compatible computer
3 You can connect any device with an audio out connector using the 3.5mm jack on the Logitech (no cable included)
4 Room filling audio
5 Good sound
6 Dead simple set-up

As it is with many people these days, my computers and my portable devices have become audio entertainment centers. I have the Logitech Z305 speakers on my primary computer, a Lenovo laptop, but while they produce excellent sound, they aren't very loud. Logitech provided me UE Air Speaker to review and I am glad to have the opportunity to work with because the Air Speaker fills a need.

The Logitech UE Air Speaker, on the other hand, is perfectly capable of filling a 400 - 500 square foot area (living and dining areas and kitchen) with clean, distortion-free audio. Bass response is surprisingly good. When testing with a Windows laptop, I used the Air Speaker with a third-party program called AirFoil that provides AirPlay functionality on the Windows platform. AirFoil provides an equalizer capability. I tweaked the settings just a bit and got pretty solid bass from this compact unit.

The Air Speaker is a nice piece of design. The exterior case is plastic, but very sturdy. The unit measures about 7 x 15 inches and is 4 inches deep. It fits nicely on a crowded shelf. It is on the heavy side: I would estimate 5 pounds or better. The front is fabric covered and does not seem to be a dust and debris magnet. The back of the unit has two bass ports and a row of connectors. On top, there is a power switch, mute switch and volume control.

Set-up takes only minutes, regardless of how you decide to connect. There is a built-in sliding dock for your i-device (which will provide charging power). Turn the speaker on, dock your device and follow the prompt for installing the Logitech UE Air app. Then you're ready to connect wirelessly. Connecting to a computer is equally simple. Logitech deserves credit for reducing installation to a very few, very simple steps.

Once you've connected to your WiFi network, you're pretty much set.

Using the UE Air Speaker is a pain-free operation. Depending on what device you are using, it boils down to choosing the Air Speaker and you're good to go. Using your i-device, you can control volume, bass and treble and, of course, your audio source. On other devices, you use whatever application you choose, making sure to choose the UE Air Speaker as your audio output device.

The novelty may fade over time, but it is really cool to be able use several devices with one speaker system.

Overall, the Logitech UE Air Speaker is a very nice unit. It provides adequate volume to fill a considerable area, very good audio with pretty good bass and it is wireless and will work with practically any WiFi connected device that can also work with Apple's AirPlay. Very nice!
