Logitech M505 Mouse - Good Basic Wireless Laser Mouse, With One Killer Feature: The Unifying Receiver,
This review is from: Logitech Wireless Mouse M505 (Red) (Personal Computers)
The Logitech M505 Wireless Mouse is a good mouse, with basic features. This mouse can used equally well by lefties or righties. It can work when used as a plug and play mouse or can be customized using Logitech's SetPoint software. And it runs on two AA batteries that will supposedly run for up to 15 months. In terms of features, this mouse is sold at a premium to similar models. But the killer feature is the integration with the new "unifying" receiver, which lets you use one nano-sized receiver with multiple Logitech wireless accessories. I'm not sure yet if other vendors like Kensington will also have compatible devices that can be used across brands, but being able to only use one USB plug on my laptop for both my keyboard and mouse has been a great positive for me. I use this unit along with the Logitech K350 2.4Ghz Wireless Keyboard, which is akin to the original Logitech Wave Keyboard in its design. If they make a version of the Logitech MX 1100 Cordless Laser Mouse that is compatible with the new receiver, I will probably upgrade. Until then, this is the mouse I use on my home machine. Considering the price difference is relatively minimal, the Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse I use with my laptop is probably worth looking into for those who don't need the unifying receiver. But similar to the MX 1100, I'm sure that an updated version of that mouse will be coming out soon as well. PROS + Balanced design works equally well for lefties or righties + Runs off 2 AA batteries (Logitech claims they will last up to 15 months) + The unifying receiver allows just one receiver for a multiple wireless devices + Nano-sized receiver is small enough to be left plugged in to laptops + The on / off switch on the mouse's underside allows you to save battery life + Indicator light lets you know when you have weak batteries + Works well with Windows Vista & Windows 7 (Still have to test it with Mac OS X) + The device is plug and play without installing software (installing the "unifying" software is required to use multiple devices with one receiver) + Keys are programmable with optional SetPoint software + Curved rubber sides provide a nice gripping surface + The scroll wheel allows for side to side scrolling CONS -- The minimal arch makes the mouse ideal for those with small to medium sized hands -- The mouse lacks any extra function keys, even "forward" and "back" -- The list price is a premium considering the basic features -- The scroll wheel doesn't flow freely for *hyper-scrolling* like the Vx Nano -- The mouse buttons are very *clicky* THE UNIFYING RECEIVER The "unifying" receiver is a very nice feature. It's nano-sized, just like the VX Nano. The flexibility of being able to add more devices to your computer without having to use multiple receivers is a huge plus that saves USB ports and simplifies your accessories. It works on the 2.4 GHz frequency according to the packaging, and the range was a pleasant surprise. While it won't work with older devices, it currently works with the following: 1. Logitech M505 Wireless Mouse (this product) 2. Logitech K350 2.4Ghz Wireless Keyboard 3. Logitech Performance Mouse MX 4. Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX 5. Logitech Wireless Keyboard K340 In order to add another device, you must go download the unifying software from Logitech. It will then walk you through restarting turning your devices off and on again to pair your additional device. CONCLUSION This mouse is ideal for those who just need a basic wireless mouse but plan on using multiple accessories now or in the future. If you need a mouse and keyboard now, this is a great unit when paired with the K350. The price is a slight premium but it's worth it if you plan to use multiple accessories based upon the added convenience. If you don't need the unifying receiver, then strongly consider the Vx Nano. It's only a slight premium to this model and is worth it for the extras if you can afford the higher price tag. Enjoy.

I go through mice pretty quickly as I like a fresh/new scroll and click. This mouse on the upside has:
1. Crazy long battery life-- they advertise 15 months on 2 included AA's! Crazy! 2. SUPER stylish. I love the red body and white stripe on the rubberized sides. 3. A premium click feel. 4. Uses the "unifying" receiver so you can run multiple Logitech devices that support "unifying" wireless with one tiny receiver. Easy install. On the downside: 1. No back/foreword button on the left side. 2. The scroll isn't quite as "premium" as the Anywhere Mouse MX 3. The value compared to the quality & price of the Anywhere Mouse MX isn't quite there in my opinion. This is a really nice, very stylish long lasting mouse. If style and long battery life are more important to you than a back button and a more premium scroll and the ability to mouse on glass, this is a perfectly awesome choice for a mobile mouse or small mouse for someone who prefers a smaller mouse. Otherwise, check out the Anywhere Mouse MX. It costs more but the Anywhere Mouse MX is "THE" de facto best mouse available today, in my opinion. I rate it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think the Anywhere Mouse MX travel mouse gives more premium features and value for the cost. And red is my favorite color so choosing the MX says a lot!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech Wireless Mouse M505 (Red) (Personal Computers)
I bought this for my home theater PC in my living room to go with the keyboard that uses the same Unity receiver. I stuck the receiver into one free frontside USB port on the box and can run both the keyboard and mouse off the same nearly invisible dongle. Both the mouse and the keyboard work from 30 feet away as tested. It even worked from another room. After trying two Microsoft mice which wouldn't work from more than four feet from the dongle, having a mouse which works on anything from carpet to a velvet couch up to 30 feet away with zero lag or glitches, was gratifying. I did have to download a free utility to get the PC to pair the same keyboard dongle with the mouse, but it was stupidly easy to do. I'm probably going to buy several more of these, one to keep in my netbook, the other for my PS3. Rock on Logitech for making a mouse and keyboard which are superb for home theater PC use.
