3.0 out of 5 stars Nice and powerful but crossover is wacky
I like the 'fit and finish' of this system but the bass is 'boomy'. After some investigating (using motherboard AC97 audio and an external Soundblaster Extigy) I think the issue is that there is an internal crossover from the front L/front R channels to the subwoofer and even in 5.1 mode (set by a slide switch on the unit) it is active -- so there is no way to use the...

I actually got these babies instead of the original purchase of the Logitech z680's Digital speakers.
I went out to (intending) to buy the Logitech z680's as I heard that they are top rated.
I couldn't find them availabe, so I went with these and I am NOT disappointed!!
I took them home and immediately set them up and connected them to my PC and I must admit that I am very pleased and surprised by the quality in which I hear now.

Sound card ~
I have a Soundblaster 5.1 Sound card and what a difference it makes!!
You need to check your sound card, and if it is of anything close to the requirements, then you will not be disappointed.

Package and Set-up ~
I recieved the system carefully packed.
Each componant was in its own sleeve in the box.
As stated before, Setup was VERY simple.
Colour coded wiring made it snap and the Set-up was completed in no less than 10-15 minutes.
The wiring is thick and not thin, as in some of the models I looked at.
This speaker set is very solid and heavy.

Looks ~
The speakers look fashionable and sleek , and pleasing to the eye.
If your not happy with the silver colour, all you have to do is remove the cover and then you will have a set dark silver speakers, awesome :)
Each seperate speaker can be adjusted to "swivel" either horizontally or vertical, depending on your preference. Another plus!

Sound ~

I am a avid gamer and play alot of FPS's.
I have played a short section of Single Player MoH:AA and was impressed, I then went online and played in Multiplayer Mode and I was blown away by the little nuances that I now noticed, which were not noticed before. I was very impressed!!
Each sound is enhanced dramatically!!
I heard even Bass, which was not too "Boomy" nor drowned out the rest of the speakers!!
Music and effects were crystal clear and precise.
I heard the "Zips and Zings" clearly and have heard my opponates behind me, making me react much more precisely, thus improving my game and response time.

Now I know there are aficinados concerning sound and what not, I am only stating what I enjoyed out of these speakers.
I am a gamer and I do not punish my speakers by playing them excessively loud!!
I have them at a comfortable level, even tho, I did hear my upstairs neighbour "bang" on the ceiling above, meaning that these did the "trick" ;)

If you are looking for a quality, well built, solid set of 5.1 speakers and not looking to bust your cash flow, then these are HIGHLY recommended!!
You will not be disappointed!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressed!, January 3, 2004

This review is from: Logitech Z-5300 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System (Personal Computers)
Let's get the price stuff out of the way. I was amazed with the value that my buddy got when he bought these speakers for his computer. When I heard them, I really couldn't believe he payed the price he paid.

Now to the rest of the stuff: I really loved these speakers after demo-ing them for a friend. I set the speakers up like any mini-home theatre should be set up (I put the two fronts and two rears diagonally facing eachother so the sound-waves met at a point about a foot behind the listener's head and positioned the center channel directly 1 1/2 feet from the listener's head. From this setup, the sound was phenominal (for the price). Channeling on the system is great - when listening closely you can hear every single channel, but when enjoying a movie, you are usually drawn into the movie too much to notice the actual sound channeling - this is when you notice the incredible sound. The mids and highs are greatly expressed (i noticed some hiss with the highs, however.. it's minimal, but any audiophile like myself would notice this clearly) and the subwoofer is pretty powerful. It doesn't give the punch that my klipsch subwoofer gives nor does it give the tone-differing of my logitech THX setup, but it definitly is incredible for what you get. The subwoofer is also the system's amp and it does a great job at this. The end result is a pretty impressive system in a compact package - the perfect low-end multimedia setup for audiophiles in small spaces.

I also loved how the speakers can be positioned differently. I love the way the speakers can go from vertical to horrizontal in just a slight twist of the base of the speaker. Swiveling speakers are not only fasionable but also convenient for many users. This is a large plus.

I also would like to mention that I was impressed that this speaker system passed the THX certification test with such a low power-rating. The speaker system as a whole output 280 watts of sound. This usually is plenty for small rooms or whimpy listeners, but I was impressed to hear that these speakers are certified for the best possible performance when playing music.

About the power ratings: I found these speakers to be directly proportional to the power of the Logitech Z-560s. While the 560s' rating is a bit higher, I couldn't find a main difference between the two setups. I can't compare the speakers directly but I found no difference. This system most-definitly deems the 560s obsolete. More speakers with the same power rating and at a much lower price means for a new mid-range speaker setup from Logitech!

However, I have one main complaint about these speakers. Logitech has always made the correct decision to use standard speaker cables in the past for their systems, but this time they used abnormal wires - meaning you can't upgrade to monster cables nor can you attatch these sats to other recievers. This is a slight dis-advantage for many users like myself, but I'm sure many average home users will never have the need to do anything like this.

Who is this speaker setup for? I'd say it would make a great gift for any music or movie lover. If you are an audiophile, however, I may look out and decide if you will ever need or want to change the speakers in any way. As I mentioned. you CANNOT change the wire or add different speakers. You cannot add the satelites to different recievers. The stupid abnormal wires just don't allow it.

The sound quality these speakers give, however, and the price you pay for them, warrant for quite a good purchase. If you are serrious about your sound, I would think long and hard about buying these speakers or not. However, if you will never find the wierd wires a bother, then this could be the perfect setup for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Speakers, November 12, 2003

First of all, Amazon's claim of a shipping weight of 18 pounds is definitely incorrect. 45 pounds is much closer to the mark. The subwoofer in this system is *very* solidly built.

With that said:

Pros:
- Clear highs
- Amazing bass
- Great price
- Well built--satellites look quite stylish
- Capable of putting out an enormous amount of power.

Cons:
- Midranges could be a little stronger.
- The matrix option to mix stereo into surround doesn't seem very effective. I just leave it off since the Audigy's CMSS 3D is much better, in my opinion.

The system came very well packed. Setup was pretty simple. Taking it out of all the packaging took longer than hooking everything up. The wires were conveniently color-coded. It took about 15-20 minutes in all for setup.

I have an Audigy 2 soundcard, and I'm also in a dorm room, so the room dynamics are probably quite different. Nonetheless, when I played music through them, I was impressed with the quality--it was crystal clear. It handles everything I threw at it with aploomb--from Chopin to Creed to Duran Duran. One time, the guys on the floor decided to see who's set of speakers was actually the loudest. That's the only time I've tried turning up the volume on the Logitechs to full --I was quite surprised at how nice the speakers still sounded, as well as the noticeable lack of distortion at 100% volume. Good luck getting these to distort at any volume.

Movies and games are no different. Watching the Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers with these speakers is quite an experience. You can literally FEEL the rumble as Gandalf, Eomer, and the Rohirrim charge down the steep slope, or the rock protesting as the Ents rip apart Isengard and flood it.

I also tried out Halo and Unreal Tournament 2003 and in conjunction with my Audigy 2, these speakers really delivered. You can actually feel that rocket going by you as it barely misses in Unreal, or the waterfalls, streams, and other environmental effects in Halo.

These speakers offer great value for your money, and they provide some of the best audio I've heard out of a computer speaker system. I'd recommend them to anyone looking to upgrade to a 5.1 system that won't break the wallet. The sub pumps out an impressive volume of bass, and the satellites complement it well, providing excellent highs and good mids. Mids could probably be improved a bit, but at this price, you cannot really complain.

After purchasing and testing other speaker systems over the last year, the buck stops here! With fantastic sound quality and surround-sound, I now can enjoy all kinds of music, from rock to classical and everything in between. Whatever your needs are (music listening, game playing, movie watching), the Z-5300s will allow you to hear with clarity all of the sounds that were meant to be heard without interference, distortion, or lack of volume. I have not found another computer speaker system that can compete with the quality or price.

I rated this product 5 stars for superb quality. RCA cables are used, so the length of speaker wiring is extendable, the construction is strong, yet very stylish, and the system handles high volumes without losing clarity. The cables and hardware provided allow many different set-up options, such as hanging the speakers.

While I keep the bass volume low, there is a seperate control to increase the bass volume for those who like the the walls to shake. Note: If too much bass is passing through the speakers while the bass volume is at the lowest setting, check your software settings. I had to turn off the bass effects in my software program to get the proper sound quality.

I have the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 card. Be sure to have the proper sound card installed to take full advantage of the surround sound offered by the Logitech Z-5300s.

This is a great product. I dont know how the sound quality compares to other products, but I know the quality is 100x better than my Dell Altec Lansing 2.1 system. 280 watts is not as much as the z-680s, but it is enough for a small to medium area. If you don't need the home theater decoding, these speakers are an incredible value.

Installation was incredibly easy, it took longer to untangle my old speakers' power cord than to hook this up. Everything is color coded.

One minor low point is if I put my ear DIRECTLY in front of the speaker (less than 1 inch away), I hear a very low hissing sound. When I sit normal distance (2 feet) from the speakers, it is absoulutely silent in the room. Even 5 inches away there is no hiss. This is the amp making the hiss, and not my sound card, because when my computer is off there still is a slight hiss. Don't let this turn you away, as I think it is typical with almost all high powered speaker systems.

With my Audigy 2 sound card, the quality is amazing! Buy these today if your speakers are either 2.1 or low quality other ones. You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Product, Totally Satisfied, Go Buy It, U'll Luv it!, May 15, 2004
By
This review is from: Logitech Z-5300 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System (Personal Computers)
I wanted to buy a speakers set with the most value for my money (my budget was final price should be under 150 with shipping) but wasn't ready to compromise on quality. Keeping this in mind, I started researching available brands and products in the market. I went to Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA and tested available speakers there for hours. I know the noise there and absence of properly isolated environment is BAD for these tests (requirements not being met for proper testing), but still I wanted to feel all the sets available out there. It's just necessary for me, can't buy something blindly, have to touch, feel and experience it before I decide to buy it. Anyways, I tested a lot of products, Altec Lansing, Klipsch, Logitech, Creative, JBL, Bose, etc. Read reviews on websites out there for available models of most popular gear in stores. I Googled for the products I was interested, to read all reviews out there (mostly on gaming web sites). Talked to my friends about their experience with such products. After listening to everyone, I decided Logitech 5300 is what I want. The deciding factors were: Price (most reasonable price) and Quality (Only Klipsch's $400 Speakers were better than these)! I didn't want a full fledge Home Theatre System, as I will buy those later for my house, and these will be used in my bedroom then, currently they are more than what I need for my Apt's living room (400 Sq. Ft.). I played all sorts of Audio CDs, U2, Enigma, Yanni, (Rock, Classicals, no Rap) etc. all of them sounded really well, not much loss or let's say acceptable loss of very low bass (price is under 150 bucks!) So keep that in your mind when you go buy these speakers - Best possible quality for the price! And buy it here from Amazon. I got free Super Saver Shipping, UPS Ground, they delivered in 2 Days! Ordered on Sunday, got them on Tuesday! Guess it was because I live in a major city (Dallas) but who doesn't these days! Earlier, I searched for the best deal too on web n stores - Extensive search, only 2 other web stores offered less price than Amazon but they didn't offer free shipping, thus I dropped them in a second. I have owned all sorts of speakers in the last 12 years, Sansui, Technics, Panasonic, Sony, Bose - They are all best but if you are looking for best speakers for gaming, DVD Theatre experience, these r the best at this price in this class! Count on me and go buy them, you won't be disappointed, I would even say 'satisfaction is guaranteed'. Some friends did say 'buy only Klipsch for best quality', I would if they would have pitched in another 250 bucks (they r expensive too n I understand). I was not willing to spend 400 bucks on this particular class/kind of speakers. Mind you these are not full fledged home theatre system speakers, but you will be amazed by them when you will turn your volume around 65-70%, they DO rock! Don't think you will be buying the best in the whole world, but sure they are 'The Best' in their class! Best Value with no compromise on quality! Hope this review helps you in deciding! Cheers n Best of Luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, especially for this price, August 5, 2004

This review is from: Logitech Z-5300 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System (Personal Computers)
As the midway set between their budget/entry level Z-640 and their top of the line Z-680s, this set is a lot closer to the high end than the lower. My only gripes are the fact that the remote is wired to the subwoofer and the fact that you can't get "true" 5.1 off a game system like you can with the Z-680s unless you have a seperate decoder (which does make sense because the Z-680s are more expensive). However, the pseudo-5.1 effect that comes with these speakers works pretty well if you don't have that.

The subwoofer is a little bulky compared to other sets similar to this one, but other than that, you can't go wrong here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money, October 13, 2004
This review is from: Logitech Z-5300 5.1-Channel Surround Speaker System (Personal Computers)
First off, for something under $200, these speakers are absolutely amazing. Sound is clear, and you can turn them up really loud. The sub is HUGE for computer speakers (and actually a bit out of control sometimes). Here is a summary of what i think of these speakers:

Pros:
Great value for money
Good sound
Easy to set up (except getting neat wiring... see below)
Analog means they work with pretty much any soundcard
Lots of power

Cons:
Sub can be a bit too loud
Remote has a thick, ugly cable
Doesn't use standard speaker wire, so it's a bit hard to set up if the wires provided are too short

Overall, if you want computer speakers, you should seriously consider these.

These speakers really have made me enjoy my music alot more. I used to have a 2.1 speaker system that had came with my computer, and the bass just wasn't what it should be. So i decided to go and buy these. The sound quality of the voices is so much clearer and crisper. Not to mention the subwoofer is the size of a 15 inch t.v it delivers amazing bass. i've even used these speakers to play on my xbox, since it comes with an adapter to use on tv's and such. There isn't many speakers out here that can cost this little and give such good quality. I highly recommend these speakers if you are going to use them for gaming on your computer. It gives you such a different effect, i even mounted the back two to my ceiling since they are able to rotate and have holes for you to mount them.

Being an 'old guy' that has been intimately involved with stereo systems for over 35 years, I feel qualified to state that the combination of price and quality has reached a perfect ratio with this system. First note that I am using a Creative Labs Audigy 2ZS sound card with this system. You don't have to be a 'discriminating' listener of music to appreciate the clariy, brilliance and bass drive of this system. Very well done indeed. The ONLY thing I had to do to 'extra' with this system is purchase extensions for my 2 rear speakers with inline connectors. I have surround sound capabilities in my home office now and it is truly, truly enjoyable to listen to music through my PC now. I will soon be adding an XM-Radio peripheral to my system to bring an endless source of digital music to my office. Installation was easy, just read the instructions. Included software for speaker calibration and balance was simple and enjoyable. Special effects were demonstrated on the disks and impressive. Additional software of games etc. was very much appreciated. All in all, I did VERY well by purchasing the sound card and speaker combo here.
