Book Description

Sasha wakes up in the middle of the night by the screams of a little girl she doesn't know, and suddenly finds herself trying to protect the child against the end of the world.

Derek's vacation hadn't even started when his dog saves him from something he could have never imagined. Using what little resources he has, he struggles to stay alive in an unfamiliar town teeming with unspeakable horrors.

Sanjeev unknowingly helps to create the epidemic that threatens to annihilate the population, but his options have run out and he is forced to choose between his humanity or his scientific endeavors.

Strangers meet under apocalyptic circumstances, and have to rely on each other for survival. What begins as an unsteady, uncomfortable partnership to stay alive turns into a make-shift family who will do anything to save each other from the threat of the Loki Variation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This author is one to watch April 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not your average zombie book, folks. These critters are mobile, agile and hostile and make for a much more credible threat than just about any other I have read. Reading along about the devastation caused by these predators makes you wonder how anyone could survive. The closest I can come to compare is with the night runners from Jim O'Brien's New World series, but the monsters of this book are clearly this author's own creation.

Anyway, enough about the monsters. The characters are what makes this piece work, and I found the development of Derek and Sasha and all the others to be believable and interesting. The members of this little group are not two dimensional and the way Hud and Travis step up later in the book shows the complexity I appreciate. What you see is not always what you get. The author understands this and I found her drawing of all her "family" to be a bittersweet treat.

On note of advice addressed to the author- if you are going to write about gun-totting characters, do a little research on the subject. Not being critical here (note the 5 star review), but a short time spent beefing up your knowledge in this area will add a great deal of authenticity to your stories. If nothing else, ask a vet or hunter. They usually be will be glad to help. Now get back to work so I can read your next book!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but could have been better. December 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story had a lot of potential. However the author failed to put much depth into the story arcs. A little two much time was spent on describing the characters feelings.

About two thirds into the story an event happened that almost made me stop reading (trying not to give spoilers), but finished it anyway because I wanted to see how things wrapped up. The ending was not satisfying to me. So much time was spend in the story developing the characters, then the ending happened.

First two thirds were good, last third - not so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch book! November 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Watch out George Romero The Loki Variation is a top notch book that I could see becoming the ultimate zombie movie! The action started immediately and kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page! Sabrina James Riley's descriptions were so vivid that I could visualize every scene with such clarity. This book needs to be put on the big screen!
Sasha finds herself protecting a young girl from creatures she could only have imagined in nightmares. I loved the parental bond she felt towards Nora and the way she cared for her above her own wants and needs. Searching for safety and answers to what has happened, they meet Derek and his loyal dog Ripley. Attraction between them is evident from the start, but nothing is simple in this new world they find themselves emerged into. I have to say I have a HUGE crush on Derek!!
Derek, Sasha and Nora pick up more survivors and become a family of sorts. This band of characters stick together and fight to keep each other alive. I really loved the characters, I could relate with them and I kept my fingers and toes crossed, hoping they would win against these almost supernatural forces. I did not want the book to end and found myself freaking out at the cliffhanger of an ending. I don't want to give anything away, but I will tell you that I cannot wait to read what happens in the next book. GREAT BOOK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously great June 5, 2012
By H.R.

The zombie genre has been around long enough that there really isn't anything that hasn't been done. However this author took the old and put a new spin on it. I couldn't put it down. I don't understand what the heck some of these people who gave it lower reviews are talking about. Especially that one star, I think he read a different book entirely. I highly suggest picking this book up, you wont regret it.

I am not typically into zombie books but this one intrigued me. A cool twist with enough science to keep me reading. I recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars really enjoyed this book! February 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book! It is truly a page turner, from the first moment it was hard to put down, until I got near the end of the story and I didn't want the book to finish. I immediately cared about the characters and couldn't wait to see what would happen to them next. The scientific side of it made it sound just real enough to scare you. I've suggested this book to everyone I know, and would really enjoy seeing the story on the big screen. I eagerly await more from this author!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining January 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was an enjoyable read. It wasn't the best of the zombie type books, but it was far from being the worst.

The pluses: I thought the action was well written. The book starts off at a fast pace and keeps going hard for a while. I thought the author did a great job keeping the action going. Very few typos etc compared to most free/cheap downloads.

The minuses: I wish there was a little less of the Sasha- Derek love story, and more on the actual day-to-day surviving. I was also a little annoyed with how the two star crossed lovers spent so much time thinking incorrect assumptions about the other one instead of just coming out and talking to each other; it made them seem younger than their supposed years

Overall a good read, and since I got it as a free download I was pleasantly surprised.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so much... December 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While I found the writing style fun and entertaining, the book is filled with amazing plot holes. The relationships that develop in the midst of the terror are barely believable. There's very little "hard science" that would justify the background of the story and a late twist completely negates even the possibility. Some of the things the characters do seem amazingly stupid and reckless, despite being touted as the heros of the story. It's ubundantly clear the book didn't go through the typical editorial process that a paper published book would go through as there are misspellings, grammatical errors and unnecessary plot tangents that detract from the flow. I had to stop and re-read several times and figure out what's wrong with the sentence to make it fit in my brain. If you're looking for something you don't need to think or care about, just read and pass the time, this might be your book.
