About the Author

The task of researching and assembling this book was a rewarding journey for us. Karol Lolek Josef Wojtyla was nothing short of an amazing human being and we are fortunate to have known and loved him as our pope for twenty-six years. Lolek celebrates the childhood of Pope John Paul II and it is our hope that it serves as an inspiration for children and adults cultivating tolerance, gratitude, humility, faith, fortitude, and love for all mankind. Our intention is to induce quiet reverence as well as inspire action in a tribute to our beloved Lolek as human rights advocates and defenders of the oppressed. May we dedicate our lives and souls to the greater good of mankind using the Holy Father as a template. Many world travelers settle for the summer in the beautiful resort area of Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan, where Mary and Mark Hoffman are honored to live and work with their four children. In addition to the beauty of their surroundings, Mary's creative inspirations emanate from experiences traveling the United States with her parents, seven brothers and sisters, and the family dog in one of America's first motorhomes, one her father expertly fashioned from a GM delivery truck. Charity has always been important to Mark and Mary. They continue to support cancer research organizations and both national and local charity programs. Mary produces a multitude of art including original oil paintings and clay art in addition to her line of greeting cards, prints, and books. You are cordially invited to Mark and Mary's fine arts and crafts gallery in Harbor Springs, Michigan, or online.

After reading about "Lolek" by the Hoffman's I thought I would visit their shop in Harbor Springs this summer and purchase a copy, but I just couldn't wait. I was in a local religious articles store recently and saw this book. The owner removed the plastic wrapping and together we looked through the book and both of us were amazed with the beauty and content, and I just had to buy it!

Lolek is a beautifully illustrated children's book about Pope John Paul II. The story of John Paul's life is gently told to convey the holiness, strength, beauty, love and wisdom of this great man. This book is an excellent way to introduce children to our late Holy Father, who many children are too young to remember. It would be a great keepsake for children, who will hopefully see John Paul canonized in their lifetime.

This book does an incredible job of giving children a short biography of John Paul including his family, love of sports, friends, skiing, studying, his fight against poverty and communism, becoming a priest and pope. It gives us a look at a couple of special celebrations in Poland: August 15th is celebrated as the Feast of Our Lady of the Harvest, and June 23rd is a celebration of St. John`s Eve celebrating God`s creation of fire and water. Both of these are beautifully illustrated.

The illustrations include maps of Poland, Italy, and the world, that will help kids understand where John Paul was born and where Vatican City is. Pope John Paul II traveled to 129 countries while he was pope and in each country he kissed the ground to show his love and respect.

Two pages are devoted to illustrating and explaining the rosary with the Luminous Mysteries added by John Paul. The rosary was his favorite prayer.

I highly recommend this book for schools, homes and libraries. My copy will go my parish library after my grandchildren read it.

LOLEK is just wonderful. I enjoyed it along with my children. It gives so many special insights to John Paul II and who he was as a boy. The unique illustrations truly make him come alive for children. It makes the perfect gift for a child on their birthday or First Communion or even a baby gift that can be enjoyed for years to come.

In looking for ideas for a First Communion gift, I came across this gem. I would have bought it for the illustrations alone, but it is a wonderful book fitting of this wonderful man. I bought a few as gifts and a copy for myself!

I hope to make it to Northern Michigan to see more of what this talented couple has done.

No matter what your age, this book will touch your heart. It is as beautifully written as it is illustrated. By the end of the book I had "chills", as it tells such a miraculous story about this incredible boy who became Pope. Please don't think you have to be Catholic to enjoy and appreciate this story...it is for everyone. The artwork brings the story to life and readers will become engrossed in this true story. This makes a great gift...I know I have given them to all my friends...and they loved it.

Mary Hramiec Hoffman and her husband, Mark Hoffman have collaborated to create the wonderful story of Lolek, the boy who grew up to become Pope John Paul II. The story is a warm and enlightening mix of the history of his boyhood, as well as the major influences that lead him toward his future as pope. The illustrations really bring the book alive for readers young and old. It's part biography, part geography, part Catholic education and all heart.

Lolek is a history and geography lesson drawn in a cute and whimsical way. But I also found myself going back and re-reading some of the passages of Lolek's young life and what had influenced him. As a parent, I used this story to help me inspire my children to look at their own gifts and try to be the best they can.
Most of us know John Paul II the man and his accomplishments, but Mary and Mark's gentle storytelling of his childhood gives us a better understanding of his character and how he was shaped into the man we all grew to love.
