A great gift,
This review is from: L Is for Lollygag: Quirky Words for a Clever Tongue (Hardcover)
I got this book as a gift from a friend today. She's a word nut like me, I love weird and unusual words. The words in the book will add color to your vocabulary or simply remind of some of the rarer words you've heard. It will make you laugh out loud saying some of them.

Tally Ho!,
This review is from: L Is for Lollygag: Quirky Words for a Clever Tongue (Hardcover)
"L is for Lollygag" is simply a fun book. It's a quick read, but one that you'll want to re-read immediately. It was released by Chronicle Kids, but adults will find it entertaining as well--I know I did! While I knew most of the words it covered, it's a good reference for when you're looking for that perfect 19th century turn of phrase.

I bought this book as a gift for someone; when I got it, I flipped through it to check it out and now I want one for myself! Neat little facts, tid-bits, good variety of words, lay-out of book is even fun. Definately reccomend this book!

I purchased this book to stick in a care package for my daughter that just moved away to college, but before I sent it, I read through it and now I'm quite smitten as well.
Off to buy my own copy!

Not only do I adore this book, my 9 year old son thinks it's great too. We look up words together some mornings, each choosing a word for the day, jot them on a piece of paper which we tuck in our pocket and then pull it out to use throughout the day. Our most recent gems inclue logorreah, long shanks, lickety split, and lollygag. Even my 5 year old picks a word of the day and enjoys using and hearing the word. I appreciate that our knowledge base of words is growing! It's written in "everyday language" and humorously uses examples and explanations I can relate to. I'm afraid I'll run out of words to learn though so I wish it were bigger.

The review states the book is designed for 9-12 year olds, but even our seven-year-old son loves this book. We have a great time picking a page at random and reading the words/definitions out loud, making up funny sentences that incorporate the word of choice. As a result, our kids regularly joke about silly words like "hooliganism," "muckety-muck," and "wisenheimer." The quirky, old-fashioned illustrations make the book all the more fun.

I bought this book to use for journal writing with my 3rd graders. I choose a word from the book, have them use it and underline it in their journals, and it's so much fun to hear them use the word throughout the day. "Moxie" and "irked" have become a part of their vocabulary as well as other quirky words.
