The Color Splash is like photographic rock and roll. I love the long-exposure with colored-flash style - it's really cool. You end up with a bright, colored subject against a glowing background. If you wave the camera around with the shutter open, you can place these crazy streaks of light behind your subject as well. There's no other camera that can do this, and its...

2.0 out of 5 stars take the colorsplash with a pinch of salt.
Not related to the performance of the camera - mine arrived missing the lid - and it looked like it had previously been opened - however I bought it "new" of amazon. I was nonetheless excited and it looked like nothing (minus the lid) was missing so I set it up and got to shooting.

I can't say if the film was tricky or not to load. Reason being is that I...

The Color Splash is like photographic rock and roll. I love the long-exposure with colored-flash style - it's really cool. You end up with a bright, colored subject against a glowing background. If you wave the camera around with the shutter open, you can place these crazy streaks of light behind your subject as well. There's no other camera that can do this, and its white body is dead sexy.

As another reviewer mentioned, a tripod thread would be nice, (Lomo, can you hear me??) but I can live without it for the time being. Be sure to use 400 or 800 speed film - that way you'll maximize your flash range. Also, get close when you use the purple or red filters, they block a lot of light and your shot can be really underexposed if you're too far away.

Reason being is that I don't have much experience loading film so I can't make an accurate comparison.

Pros: The three rolls I churned out right away came out really neat and fun. So it accomplishes what it claims, it takes good photos, I can't deny that.

Cons: The colorwheel design. In my opinion it was as though the designers spent most of their design time and budget on the wheel idea and then rushed through everything else, resulting in a bad overall design. What the websites related to the colorsplash sheepishly WONT tell you is that not only do you NOT have 4 slots with which to load color gels, you only have two, with the two others permanent (a blue and yellow). Right away I felt like the online descriptions were very misleading regarding this and it is extremely limiting. It would be one thing if the gels were easily interchanged but they are not, requiring tweezers or some equivalent (not included, but reccomended in the manual), not feasible if you are out, especially at night. Plus if you wanted to have a default unfiltered flash, it means you would only get one color option in addition to the default blue and yellow - not that great in my opinion. I think that as camera that is billed as a simple camera with its main selling point being an outstanding flash device it fails horribly. If you don't really require the variety that the colorsplash falsely advertises, you should be fine.

In addition to that, my camera broke withing the first 24 hours. The plastic part of the camera that the strap is connected to broke off, very easilly, considering I barely had the camera - but that could have been a unique defect, or maybe missing the lid it moved around in shipping cracking that part of the plastic - I will probably never know. Although the mechanism was unaffected (as far as I knew) I wasn't comfortable with any part of it breaking off in under 24 hours and returned the camera.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised, January 10, 2007

I bought this camera with some cash I got for Christmas, because I wanted a small fun 35mm to carry around, but I didnt want a Holga and the Horizon Kompakt or Perfekts were too expensive. My other cameras are high end professionals (Nikon F1, Mamyia C33 and Mamyia RB), and never really got around to experimenting with cross processing and color gels, so I thought this camera would be appropriate for lo fi fun.

After reading the reviews on here, it seemed like most complained about the cheapness of the camera, found it inoperable upon delivery, broke parts, etc. Folks, Im not sure what you were expecting, or know the other types of cameras that Lomo produces, but they are CHEAP TOY CAMERAS. They are not meant to be high quality photo wonders. They are meant to be simple, have light leaks, take weird, interesting photos and thats it.

I was almost expecting a total piece of crap after reading the other reviews, but i was more than happy with the quality of this little camera. When held, it feels solid. The little winder does feel a bit cheap, but this is to be expected. The color gels are easy to change out (I can use my stubby fingernail to get the door off), but dont expect to be able to do it on the fly. It does take a small amount of tinkering.

It came in a really unique packaging system that can be kept to store the camera and its documentation over and over, and is great if you travel alot or are moving. The unique 3 piece protective cover for the camera is an ugly teal and forest green concoction, but it fits the camera well and black vinyl spray paint from the auto parts store will fix that easily (the stuff lasts a lifetime). Im excited to see how the pictures turn out.

Expect a fun to use and fun to look at camera to take with you on your daily excursions, and then upload them to the lomography.com website to share!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Colorsplash Spectacle, October 6, 2004
This review is from: Lomography Colorsplash 35MM Camera (Electronics)
The Colorsplash from the Lomographic Society is a gift from GOD to all photographers.

I am a serious and avid photographer and was looking for a simple yet fun camera to take with me on the go (and rule one, after all, is "take your camera everywhere"). The colored flash is a creative idea that adds to an already brillant camera. The simplicity of the Colorsplash allows for the user to take a picture within a second's notice with dreamy, streaky results. The flashes are fun to play with and fun to adjust.

The flash comes with two colors already put in - yellow and blue - and allows for you to pick and chose which other colors you want to put in the other two avaliable slots. If you follow the simple directions as listed in the little booklet the comes with the camera, you'll have no problem removing and changing out the different filters for the flash.

A few drawbacks include the handcrank for when your finished with your film and need to rewind it. Once, i forgot that the handcrank had to be turned in a certain way and broke off a tiny piece of it. It was no big loss and the crank still functions without the little tiny piece at the end, but it just goes to show how fragile this little wonder can be. Another drawback is the price. Thankfully, amazon.com offers it for a few dollars lower than lomography.com. However, i feel with as many times as i have used this camera, the sixty something dollars is well worth it. Also, the cover that it comes with is just a piece of junk. It covers up the back of the camera and makes it difficult to unload your film once your done (especially if you unload at the rate i do)

The Colorsplash camera was my first introduction into the fine art of Lomography and I hope it won't be my last. Be prepared to paint your world in vivd, living colors and be spontaneous with your photographs =)

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun,a little expensive, September 14, 2004

I've had this camera for a little over a month and I've had a blast with it! I've gotten tons of great pictures from it, including some surprisingly good daytime shots, with and without the flash.

It's pretty expensive for what it is, but I've never seen anything like the Colosplash's colorwheel, so I was willing to pay.

I chose this over other lomography cameras because it's more versatile (35mm film, can take "normal" pictures)and because it's a lot more affordable than, say an LCA.

And despite the overt marketing ploys, I like the manufacturer's website a lot. You can sign up for a free "LomoHome" and post all your pictures and see other people's pictures too! I really like having a forum to display my shots, since I'm not a professional and nobody would ever see them otherwise!

Check of the manufacturers website: www.lomography.com for more detailed information, and to see what the pictures come out looking like. You'll most likely get a better price here on Amazon though.

2.0 out of 5 stars I don't reccomend this item., January 9, 2007
This review is from: Lomography Colorsplash 35MM Camera (Electronics)
Cheaply made. The rewind knob broke the first time using it. I had to rewind the film by dark room. Definately not worth its price. You could get the same effect with any other camera covering the flash with a clear colored plastic.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON"T BUY IT!!!, November 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Don't buy it. The camera is cheaply made- mine broke in about a week. It had trouble rewinding the film and the colored flash re-loader thingy broke as well. I'm going to buy a Holga instead and hopefully that will work out better. Trust me, this camera looks fun and easy to use but don't waste your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Lurrrve It!, January 30, 2004
This review is from: Lomography Colorsplash 35MM Camera (Electronics)
This camera brought joy to all my friends. It's a whoel new world of photography. It's fun and it looks cool too.Whenever i take it out of my bag and started shooting, strangers will start looking at me and my colorsplash, it's a totally unique camera with colored flash. Overall the camera itself is cool, but i do wish they came out with other colors rather than white. The camera came with a very cool box and manuals.

The only complain i have is the cover for the camera, it's seperated in 3 parts where u sort of have to help your camera "put some clothes on". It's quite hectic at times when u just wanna get hold of ur camera and just start shooting.

Apart from all the cameras i have, digital/film , this one's the most artistic of all.

I got this for Christmas and have used it several times. The results have been terrific! With some experimentation, I learned that the red filter is very strong so I use it less than the others, but it has been great for taking pictures at parties and concerts and clubs and bars. Rock and roll photos! I lost my little packet of filters, and the wonderful people at lomo international sent me two replacement packs for free! Customer service is great. I do not like the skin bag, however. It is inconvenient and gets in the way. After having it block the lens on a roll of film, I just ditched it altogether. Otherwise, I recommend this camera fully.
