Headed to London? Buy this book!!!!,
By
This review is from: London (Citymap Guide) (Paperback)
While touring London, I carried 5 or 6 different books and maps with me, not knowing which one was "the best" but wanting to have all my bases covered. However, while I was actually in the city, this was virtually THE ONLY book I used. This book has maps of the whole city so you can get the general idea of its layout, plus a map of the various zones of London so you can find anything if you have its zone number. It also has a map of the tube lines and stations, which comes in extremely handy - the underground is the fastest, cheapest, and easiest way of getting from place to place in London. A majority of the book consists of fold-out maps of the various districts of London, from Notting Hill to City and Southwark, each having detailed street layouts and point of interest labels. With each of these maps are reviews of the district's best restaurants, cafes, bars/pubs/nightliffe, shopping, and sights, all of which we found handy (unlike many of the other books). The whole book is color coded, so it is easy to find each section. And it's so small and easy to carry! The book is maybe 5x7 inches and less than an inch thick. Again I say, if you're going to London, this book is the one you need. Leave those other ones at home; you won't need them - I didn't!

folks, this is the best idea for a tourbook/map that i have stumbled across yet. i'm not prone to raving, but this will garner praise from me until the cows come home (bearing foot & mouth) no doubt.so, why is this so great? first of all, it's simple and well designed. the city is broken down into sections. you turn to those pages and there is a brief description of places to eat, shop, etc. the pages then open up into a map of the section with a description of major sites in the area. brilliant! no fumbling around a big map trying to find your street. no squinting to figure out where you are. it's easy to find landmarks, metro stops, etc. the card stock is nice and heavy and has lasted well even in my back pocket. the descriptions have been helpful without being too lengthy. and at this price, it's quite competitive with other maps while providing much more.

Lost in London,
By shrtyrck (MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: London (Citymap Guide) (Paperback)
This is the most horrendous, unhelpful sorry excuse for a map I've encountered. Most shocking is its lack of an index of street names. Also, despite the enormous, individual blown-up maps of the London neighborhoods, the streets on them aren't all labeled. Finally, instead of overlapping streets on the edges of adjoining neighborhoods, the mapmakers apparently found it easier to drop them completely off the maps. I guess this map would work if you were going to the most obvious places in London, like Big Ben, otherwise, forget it.

I love this series!,

This review is from: London (Citymap Guide) (Paperback)
My husband and I are stationed in Italy for two years and we're make the most of the travel opportunities. I bought a bunch of the Knopf CityGuides for cities we were likely to visit and we love them.
A full city map on the inside cover is divided up into 5-8, then each section is further mapped on a fold-out map made of heavy cardstock. The section maps are big and easy to read, and are marked with the most important sites in that area. Each site is briefly described with opening times and cost at the bottom. On the other side of each map is a list for that section of town of recommended restaurants, bars/music venues, and shopping sites in a few price ranges. I *love* these recommendations; they take you to non-touristy, excellent restaurants and stores. The back inside cover includes subway maps and critical getting around information. What is unique about these guides is that no matter which part of town you find yourself in, you can quickly identify something nearby to see, eat, buy, or enjoy.

Your best companion to your vacation to London!,
This review is from: London (Citymap Guide) (Paperback)
This book was quite helpful when I traveled to London for the first time a year ago. The maps and illustrations were clear and easy to follow. It showed the usual tourist attractions, but it also educated me on the least popular areas. It was especially great for when I went on my shopping expedition!Lucky for me, I have a friend who lives in London and my boyfriend lives in Manchester -- which made my decision to move to the UK much easier. But if you're out on your own, London Citymap Guide is the best companion to your vacation. Buy this book!!

Great Travel Resource! Wouldn't leave to Europe without it!,
This review is from: London (Citymap Guide) (Paperback)
While on a 10 day trip to London, my husband and I brought several guidebooks with us. More often then not, we always gravitated towards this guide. The guide is small and easily fits inside a purse, coat pocket, or backpack. We loved the detailed maps that flipped open and easily folded back into the book. We also liked the format of the book, which broke down the city into manageable and detailed sections. Visiting London on our own without a tour guide, this book made it easy to plan out our days and we were able to use the tube map in the back or look at the streets to get us to where we needed to go. There are descriptions and pictures of the main sights on the map page so we always knew what to see in the area where we were at. On the other side of the maps, there are places to eat, places to shop, and other activities that are nearby which proves to be a handy reference. What made my husband and I laugh was when people would ask us for directions! This happened on several occasions, and we didn't even have our guidebook out. I found this guide to be a life saver! We have been to other cities before and used other guides & maps, which only proved to be frustrating because they were not detailed enough, too big/bulky, or difficult to read. The map/guide made it so easy for us to figure out how to navigate the city on our own and made our trip very enjoyable! I already bought several of these guides for other cities, finding it a necessary resource for all our trips!

So many great things about this book! It's small enough to fit in a day pack easily. Its size also makes it easy to consult inconspicuously. There's nothing like being the foolish tourist with the huge guide book or massive map. It is accurate and very easy to read. The content was very useful. There is one overview map that helps orient you to the overall layout of London. Then there are 8 detailed maps of different districts through out London. Last, there is a tube map. I highly recommend having this for your trip to London. I will certainly be purchasing more in this series for upcoming trips.

I took many maps and books with me to London but the Knopf CityMap Guide was all I needed. It's hard board cover and small size made it easy to carry around with us. The city is divided into sections, with all the sites, shopping, and tube stops of each shown. It also shows which train stations to use when visiting locations outside of London (that can be tricky). A must have!

We bought several London guidebooks and maps before our trip, and received free ones from our agent and the hotels we stayed at. The guide books were great for details on the sites and for reading back at the hotel, but this was a navigational savior.
It is about 5x7, and half an inch thick. Each neighborhood in London has a fold out map -- easy to read, with Tube lines and major attractions CLEARLY labeled. There are also suggestions for neighborhood restaurants, etc. The sturdy paper meant I wasn't struggling with a bulky, flimsy map. And it held up to the (incessant) rain. This one stayed in my pocket the whole 4 days, and I promptly bought the NYC one on my next trip. I wish Knopf made MapGuides for some of the other cities I've visited since then (Boston, Toronto).

This was #1 out of the 5 books I had with me,

I would say this was my most used book during my 8 days in London. It is very easy to use and small enough to fit in your day bag or even a large pocket. It is less conspicuous than using a full size or brochure size map. And the pages fold out and are more like thin cardboard so if you are using it in wind or even light rain it's still usable. It's large enough to read very easily as well. It also had map of the underground at the back which will be your lifeline in London. There were some explanations and descriptions of things to do/see/eat in London but pretty brief. I used a larger more in-depth guide for that. This was just extremely useful for map and directions out on the town. If I had to pick one of the 5 books I had with me it would have been this one.
