Editorial Reviews

Limited edition three disc (two CD + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition of the UK trio's 2008 collection includes a bonus DVD that contains 18 of their videos. London Conversations is the first complete overview of St Etienne's catalog. It contains all the major hits from one the '90s most revered acts as well as two brand new tracks (Xenomanias 'Burnt Out Car' and the Richard X produced 'This Is Tomorrow'). Like most bands formed by former music journalists, Saint Etienne were a highly conceptual group. The trio's concept was to fuse the British Pop sounds of '60s London with the club/Dance rhythms and productions that defined the post-acid house England of the early '90s. Led by songwriters Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, and fronted by vocalist Sarah Cracknell, the group managed to carry out their concept, and, in the process, Saint Etienne helped make indie dance a viable genre within the U.K. 53 tracks. Universal.

5.0 out of 5 stars spectacular new compilation yet again, February 24, 2009

If you are reading this, you must be a fan of saint eteinne. And yes, they have released another very worthy career spanning history of their work. From the very first single to the present. Some may say why another best of, but if you already have the previous smash the system(as do I) you may be thinking do i really need another. Well, the answer is yes. This retrospective does have some crossover material from smash the system, but there are also some great tunes and new versions included. For example, the version of "boy is crying" is just brilliant.I don't think i've heard it before. There are also some rediscovered old songs and new gems like "lover plays the bass", "this is tomorrow" and their new single "method of modern love". Well worth the price. Also included are the videos!! Many of which i've never seen before. The liner notes are very interesting in their journey in creating the own pop music scene. To me, Sarah, Bob & Pete can do no wrong. Get it now. Thank for reading. Cheers!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation + videos on region 0 dvd, August 6, 2009
This review is from: London Conversations (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
I already owned Smash the System and Casino Classics, so I will admit the main reason I bought this new compilation was to get a disc full of the videos. If you are a fan of St. E and don't have Smash the System, this is an absolute must-have. If you already have Smash the System, then maybe this will make your day, maybe not. The songs on this compilation are not identical to Smash The System, but it is a bit pricey just to get a few rare and variant versions. If you want the videos, then by all means, buy this. The DVD is region 0, so it will play in any DVD player on the planet. The packaging is pretty groovy and includes lots of notes and reproduction of magazine covers that Saint Etienne has graced.

At the time I bought the item, it was cheaper to buy it from Amazon UK, so that is what I did. Before purchasing it, you may want to compare Amazon UK's price to the one offered here and get the best deal.

Perfect collection from this 60's influenced pop rock band. The selections were well chosen from all of their CDs. This is one of the most underrated bands in the world, I just love them. Sarah Cracknell's soft voice does perfect justice to this hip 60ish sounding music with a pop twist. Nice thing is St Etienne has always progressed and changed their sound so you get a nice idea of it through the collection. Example The Finisterre songs sound completely different than Tales From The Turnpike House (the last two albums). The earlier albums have a much more relic sound, the only thing missing here are the great musical numbers (without voice). It's just hard to believe that songs like "Who Do You Think You Are", "Heart Failed In The Backseat Of A Taxi", "Boy Is Crying", etc never topped the charts. They along with most of this collection are superb!
