Book Description

Shadow (Nostalgia Ventures) March 2008
Pulp fiction's legendary Knight of Darkness returns in two of his most engrossing adventures. Two legendary crime fighting agencies join forces when The Shadow teams with England's legendary Scotland Yard to investigate "The London Crimes" and the master criminal known as The Harvester. Then, The Shadow journeys to a strange "Castle of Doom", where murder lurks behind its battlements and mystery and intrigue abound in a thrilling tale of lost treasure, secret underground passages, and ghostly apparitions. In honor of The Shadow's first British adventure, popular culture historian Anthony Tollin chronicles the 1930s and 1950s English pulp reprints and the 1940s Australian Shadow radio series. This classic pulp reprint also showcases George Rozen's dazzling pulp covers and all the original interior art by acclaimed illustrator Tom Lovell.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 more classic Shadow novels in this new reprint series., March 10, 2009
This review is from: The London Crimes and Castle of Doom (Shadow (Nostalgia Ventures)) (Paperback)
Nostalgia Ventures and Anthony Tollin have teamed up to do a comprehensive reprint of several Street & Smith pulp heroes. At present, they are doing double reprints of The Shadow and Doc Savage. Shortly, they will start new series reprinting The Avenger and The Whisperer. All have complete pulp texts (no edits or removals, like past reprints), tho reset so its easier to read, the original illustrations, reprinted covers (one is used as the cover of the book, but both original pulp covers are shown on the back), and several additional articles and extras.

Hopefully, they can succeed to reprinting all these characters in these new editions, they are all excellent.

With The Shadow having over 325 pulp novels, only a few reprinted, for the most part they are avoiding those that have been reprinted. They do try to pick two that more or less 'go together' in terms of a common theme.

With this book, #8, we have "The London Crimes" (Sept 15, 1935) and "Castle of Doom" (Jan 15, 1936). The common theme of these is they are both set in England. The cover of "Castle of Doom" is used as the cover of this volume, and the original pulp covers of both are on the back cover.

"The London Crimes" is The Shadow's first published excursion overseas, to deal with a British superfoe, and team up with a Scotland Yard agent he met in an earlier adventure, "The Man from Scotland Yard" (as yet reprinted)

"Castle of Doom" was the second England adventure, written right after the first, but published several months later. Here The Shadow deals with crime at a creepy castle.

As extras in this issue are:

An Intro by pulp historian Will Murray, explaining the genesis of these 2 stories, and explains that "Zemba" (reprinted by Pyramid) could be considered a third part of the trilogy with these 2 tales.

"Shadows over England" by series editor Anthony Tollin, which tells of the British reprints of The Shadow.
