Book Description

American Aimee Kennedy doesn’t think she needs anyone … until she’s stuck with sexy banker, Simon Ruleford, in his London home.

Stranded in London with no money and no airline ticket, Aimee applies to be Simon’s housekeeper. Without the job, she’ll end up homeless in a foreign country. But Simon can’t hire the adorable American without a work permit, because he would risk losing the royal family’s business, costing years of planning and hard work. Unfortunately for Simon, fate conspires to trap Aimee in his home, while mutual blackmail and a lovable Scottie puppy keep them together. As they fight their growing attraction, Aimee’s money-making plans soon force Simon into one compromising position after another.

Ultimately, they realize they belong together. But will Simon be willing to risk his career and the family business for her? And if he does, will Aimee finally be ready to open her heart to love?

Emma Carr writes modern romance with a little bit of fun mixed in.

Ok, where do I start? First, somehow I found this book looking for chick lit....and in my opinion (though the definition of what a chick lit exactly is seems to have a few different answers depending on who you ask)...this is definitely not chick lit. It's a romance novel. There's a lot more adult content than one sees in the regular chick lit. I just want to put that out there so the reader is aware, in case they've found the book as a chick lit also.

That said, let's move on. Here are my pros and cons for this book:

- mostly enjoyable read
- light
- sometimes cute, endearing, exciting
- you get to really like many of the characters and dislike the ones you should
- great ending

- I cringed at the improperly used British English in this book. It was seriously painful. If you've never been to the UK, you might not pick up on it, but I think anyone who has spent any amount of time there/here or has watched Brit tv would be bound to notice. It's awful and so distracting until you get used to it enough to just decide to try to ignore it.
- some of the plot problems were solved in a way that made the story seem more contrived and harder to believe than it should have been
- sometimes it's hard to like the main character, her fault is driven to quite an extreme
- without spoiling too much, their first sex scene was completely unnecessary. Hated that bit, but keep in mind I normally don't read romance novels, so I'm far from an expert in what a regular romance reader would expect there.

Is it worth $2.99? Well, it's hard to say. I'm inclined to say no, actually. However, also working on a book, I know how much love, work and dedication goes in.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok Value But Writing Just Too Immature February 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read a lot of chicklit as an escape, and when I do, I am completely fine with unrealistic rom-com plots and cliche characters, as long as there is some humor or fun involved. I was encouraged by the reviews for this one, and saw that it was an indie release, which I like to support, so I gave it a try. I'm sad to say I couldn't enjoy it, although I really stuck with it, hoping the end would redeem it. Unfortunately, the dynamic between the two main characters - the British Simon and American Aimee who is 'trapped' in his home - really annoyed me. It is supposed to be your classic they-think-they-hate-each-other-but-really-it's-love dynamic, but we don't see enough of their better sides to really care all that much. The writing style put me off as well - they never become real, fleshed out people. They both just feel like 'roles' rather than individuals. And there is no nuance in their presentation - the author frequently just tells us how they feel rather than allowing it to come out through their words and actions. The plot is completely ridiculous, and while if the characters were more enjoyable I might have been willing to put up with this, since they weren't I just wanted to say 'oh come on, this whole issue can be resolved in 5 minutes flat by doing X.'

I decided to give it 2 stars though - 1 for effort, and 1 for value, as it's a good price. If you are just looking for an inexpensive escape and have low expectations, you may be fine with this. But don't expect it to measure up to mainstream chicklit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read! August 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I downloaded this other day and read it the same day. It was brilliant! I love all chick lit and can be discriminating in what I read and don't read (Wendy Wax, here's looking at you), and this is one author whose next book I can't wait to read. From the descriptions of London and the characters, to the witty banter between the characters, I felt like I knew them and couldn't wait to find out what happened next. It was really entertaining and made me want to move to London! Bravo Emma!

It is astonishing that this book has so many favourable reviews. Considering this is a self-published book, I can only say that the author has a lot of friends willing to weigh in their support of what is a bland, un-original and inauthentic "story".

I found this book completely atrocious, and am only confessing to have read it (or at least, tried to read it) because there is very little unbiased reviews for this book. I'm a huge chick-lit fan with a low threshold for the believable, but this book is so pathetic.

I would advise the author, next time she chooses to use a major city as a title, to have stepped foot in that said city before embarking on writing about it. The amount of inaccurate British descriptions disgust me - and I'm not even British! Who in their right mind would think Prince William speaks Cockney?! Anyone can take general London stereotypes to throw in a book, but it's just not acceptable.

There is much, much better reading out there, even in a traditional low-expectation genre like this. Please don't waste your money based on these ridiculous, positive reviews! I wish Amazon would allow a 0-star rating, because that's what this story deserves.

I really enjoyed this book! Once I started reading it, I didn't want to stop! In fact, I found myself excited to get to the end to see what happened, but sad to get to the end because I knew I'd miss the characters! And I do...I miss ALL of the characters! Can't wait to see what's next from this author! I love her style of writing... She's funny and creative! I'll definitely read this one again!

This was a good romantic comedy. Although the plot was unlikely, it was still a good read.
