Book Description

September 15, 1998
Since the swinging Sixties, London has been known as the world's hub of inspirational, cutting-edge fashion design. The last ten years in particular have seen an unmatched flowering of creative talents, with a host of young designers springing up to join the big names. What is it about London that makes it such a hotbed of creativity?

The London Fashion Book has the answer. Focusing both on the catwalk and behind the scenes, here unfolds a vast panorama of talents from Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Katharine Hamnett, and Zandra Rhodes to edgy, up-and-coming designers including Julien MacDonald, Hussein Chalayan, Owen Gaster, and Antonio Bevardi. And where would these be without London's hatters (Philip Treacy), shoemake (Patrick Cox and Manolo Blahnik), designers of scarves (Georgina von Etzdorf), and jewelers? This book tells all from who's at the top of their field, to what got them there, to where to find their creations.

Illustrated with hundreds of pictures by some of Britain's finest fashion photographers and illustrator, The London Fashion Book visits the cognoscenti's favorite haunts and dishes up London fashion's heroes and heroines, model-divas, muses, partygoers, and poseurs- everyone who contributes to the buzz, the electricity, that makes London the envied epicenter of the world of style.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Is London the fashion capital of the world? It certainly seems that way thanks to this glorious new book, packed with more than 380 arresting photographs and illustrations. Journalist Andrew Tucker's compendium of both legendary and new fashion names revels in the vibrancy of homegrown designer and entrepreneurial talent that makes London such an exciting place to be in the 1990s. A host of cool individuals and happening areas trip off each page--everyone who is anyone is featured, from doyennes of the industry such as Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes to relative newcomers Abe Hamilton and Stella McCartney. Hip areas across the city are covered, whether they be the traditional shopping enclaves of Knightsbridge or the latest discovery--the area around Old Street in the East End. Indispensable additions include the trendiest shop listings and a varied index of designer biographies.

This bold, beautiful book is much more than just an attractive coffee-table decoration. It is an imaginatively compiled and invaluable guide to the London fashion scene that lives up to its promise that it "will serve as a reminder of how it is, how it was, and how it could be again in the future." Buy it and indulge. --Catherine Taylor

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool Britania, March 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: London Fashion Book (Hardcover)
As one of the designers featured in this book I can say that it documents a cross section of London Style. It's not just a book full of pictures of frocks and models there are also interviews with fashion designers, shopping guides and information about the London Fashion colleges. A modern documentation of the ever changing face of London fashion. A must see for anyone with an interest in fashion.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: London Fashion Book (Hardcover)
I was looking at this book in the library one day & loved it so much that instead of taking it out for a couple weeks, I had to make it mine! Thankfully Amazon made that possible. Finding the book was no problem, the price was even better & the book was shipped in the exact amount of time that they told me it would be! It is in perfect condition and the only other thing I can say is that I look forward to when I stubble across another book that I realize I need.

1.0 out of 5 stars London Fashion? Bitter reader., May 26, 2004
This review is from: London Fashion Book (Hardcover)
A book about London Fashion but really might as well not bother because it is so dated that it only shows us what we know already. Was hoping to learn something new about London Fashion -after all who wants to hear the same old thing about the same people all the time? Well here's your chance. If you are looking for a book which shows you anything new this is not the one!!!
Buy any of the Taschen Fashion books - you get better pictures and some interesting written pieces also.
