Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This description covers #7 London Refrain, #8 Paris Encore, and #9 Dunkirk Crescendo.

These three additions to the Zion Covenant series are "director's cuts." They include portions of the Thoene classic The Twilight of Courage and thrilling, never-before-published scenes with the characters you've come to know and love. Readers will finally know the fates of Jacob and Lori Kalner from Warsaw Requiem and meet for the first time David Meyer from The Zion Chronicles, plus Madame Rose Smith and Jerome Jardin from The Zion Legacy and, most importantly, Rachel and Yacov Lubetkin, the heroes of The Zion Chronicles series. Study questions included.

From the Back Cover

England teeters on the brink of war.
It’s no longer a question of if. It’s a matter of when.

In the dark fall of 1939, the hopes of the Polish people fade as Nazi bombers strafe the beloved city of Warsaw. Politicians debate while hundreds stand in lines at the British Embassy, desperate to flee the country before Hitler’s ground forces arrive.

Mac McGrath, a veteran American photographer, recorded the landslide toward war with dedication, believing that if he told the truth, the world would rise up and put a stop to Hitler’s evil plans. Now his foolish idealism embarrasses him.

Outside the embassy gates, Jewish schoolteacher Eva Weitzman prays for a miracle. Without a British passport, she will fall into the Nazis’ clutches.

Who will live and who will die? Will anyone dare to stand against the apathy of nations?

Special Feature: Study questions suitable for individual use or group discussion.

London Refrain is also available complete and unabridged from Luke Thoene Productions (www.TheOneAudio.com)

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy all three of the "new" Zion Covenant books, July 16, 2005
By Debbi Crowson (Lexington, KY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you're a dedicated fan of the Thoene's Zion Covenant, Zion Chronicles series, you'll be very disappointed if you're expecting completely new material from these three books. London Refrain has the most new material, but the other two books are entirely taken from Twilight of Courage. A few sentences are added, but only enough to facilitate an additional story line added in London Refrain (which really doesn't ring true to the original story in Twilight of Courage). If you really wanted more on Murphy & Elisa, London Refrain gives you some of that story line. My advice, go ahead and buy book 7, but skip books 8 & 9 unless you've never read Twilight of Courage. Or, buy them just because you want your collection to be complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pitch Twilight; Keep London, Paris, & Dunkirk, September 19, 2005
It does appear that the publisher is trying to make some extra income from publishing these books. My initial excitement on reading these were being published changed to disappointment on reading the other reviews on Amazon. However, after reading all the reviews for London Refrain, Paris Encore, & Dunkirk Crescendo, I decided to buy them for our church library in the hopes that they would be more satisfying than Twilight of Courage while adding to the storylines from the Zion Covenant books. I was disappointed with that book and realized that perhaps these books were what should have been published the first time around. Having read them, I believe that that is the case. They do a much more satisfying job of completing some storylines and tying up the lives and relationships of some characters. I did notice, though, that when I began reading London Refrain, the writing style seemed different than the original Zion Covenant books. It wasn't as rich and descriptive and, in additon, there was some contrived exposition setting up the storylines from previous books. This seemed out of character from previous Zion books. Having finished them, I went back and leafed through Twilight of Courage comparing the books' contents. I found only two pages of text in Twilight that were either deleted or rewritten for these new books so they are basically a reprint of Twilight with some additions inserted. However, I believe that these do a much more satisfying job of continuing and conveying the events begun in the Zion Covenant books while introducing some new characters intertwined with the old. I do agree with a couple of other reviewers who mentioned that it is puzzling/disappointing to still not discover why David Meyer's relationship with Annie Galway simply disappears and a new one with Ellie Warne develops in the Zion Covenant series. For a library, I would definitely recommend weeding The Twilight of Courage from the collection and adding London Refrain, Paris Encore, and Dunkirk Crescendo. They are much more satisfying than Twilight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction from a Judeo-Christian perspective, August 21, 2009
By WAD (Boone, NC) - See all my reviews
"Truth Through Fiction" seems like an oxymoron but Bodie (the writer) and Brock (the historian) Thoene elevate it to a higher level. The history and circumstances are accurate. The fictional characters become friends and heroes, with a bit of "supernatural" to boot. I was so impressed with this series that I have bought all of their books that I can find and I have yet to be disappointed.
