Haydn with a pulse!, December 2, 1998
This review is from: London Symphonies 2 (Audio CD)
I was not familiar with Bernstein's interpretations of Haydn. I'm glad I decided to give them a try. Although some purists might object that these performances from 1958-1970 were not on original, period instruments, there is much to enjoy for the modern listener. These are not "prim and proper" Haydn performances. They pulse with vitality and excitement. There are pensive, lyrical slow movements; musical balance that highlights orchestral counterpoint; and a forward propulsion in some of the fast movements that is full of finger-snapping fun. What a pleasure to re-discover these Haydn symphonies with fresh ears!
