The Whitman Big Little Book series was published in the late 1960s and is based largely on TV shows of the period. Each facing page has a full color illustration with caption. Surprisingly enough, the writers tried to make the stories interesting enough for adults, who, I presume, they thought would be reading these books along with their kids.
In THE LONE RANGER OUTWITS CRAZY COUGAR, the Lone Ranger and Tonto are called upon to save the last remaining bison herd in the Old West from destruction at the hands of a Medicine Man, Crazy Cougar, who has convinced the elders of his tribe that only by killing the bison can the Indians drive out the White Man. These books are fairly advanced in terms of storyline and language. In THE LONE RANGER OUTWITS CRAZY COUGAR, the young reader is introduced to the idea that the Indians (Okay, "Native Americans") are getting a raw deal from the Whites who are destroying their way of life. For 1968, that idea was revolutionary, especially for kids raised on TV Westerns where Native Americans did nothing but grunt, whoop, say "How" and scalp people. I was eight. This book made me interested in Native Americans and sympathetic to them. I think that was well worth the purchase price! All too often in our zeal to be Politically Correct and "properly" child-oriented, we dumb down materials geared toward youngsters. What we've accomplished is that we raise dumbed-down kids into incurious adults. If you don't want to raise dumbed-down kids, make the attempt to find these (now collectible) books, and enjoy them with your children.
