From Library Journal
This book veers from the traditional how-to direction of martial arts books, focusing instead on the martial arts as an integral part of Japanese cultural and military history. Specifically, it deals with the legacy of the samurai, his code of honor and way of life, and how the warrior, especially the ninja, the "super" samurai, developed fighting skills that have become part of today's combat sports and many elite military units. Although well illustrated and written, the book is essentially a scholarly study and has limited appeal to the general reader. For libraries with Japanese and Asian collections. --Ron Chepesiuk, Winthrop Coll., Rock Hill, S.C.
