LSHT Guidbook,

This review is from: Lone Star Hiking Trail: The Official Guide (Paperback)
Excellent resource for the LSHT hiker, extremely thorough. Recently used this book on a 4 day backpacking trip of the eastern half of the trail from four notch to the terminus.
Trail descriptions, landmarks and water sources were spot on. GPS locations for the parking lots also proved very helpful as some of the forest service roads wouldn't register in our car gps.

Great book that reads really well.
Quite a bit of thought has been put into the guide so that it's equally valuable to the occasional day hiker all the way up to a thru-hiker. The maps along with the GPS coordinates and mile list descriptions are excellent. This guide really takes the guess work out of some of the more difficult to follow sections of the LSHT. Worth every penny.

Well I finished reading the guide book and I must say Karen Somers has done an
absolutely excellent job. The attention to detail in the nearly step by step description of the trail is wonderful. In fact on the sections that I have already hiked I could literally close my eyes and see exactly what was being described. I look forward to getting back out on the trail and hitting those few remaining areas that I now have a heads up on to compare. The utility of the book is also excellent. Identifying not only the key resource of water but workable campsites and the hand full of viable resupply points along the way is crucial to planning any long distance trek. I know I will use this in addition to my current system of maps to help my Boy Scouts plan their hiking and backpacking activities.

The LSHT guide is indispensible for those undertaking extended hikes on the trail. It is easy to follow and very simlar to the Appalachain Trail Guide.

Good trail info. I don't hike the trails, I run them so there is a lot of info that I don't use. Have yet to get lost. Easy read as well. I read cover to cover in one evening.

This is a small book packed full of information at your finger tips no Hiker should be with out. It is well written and easy to use and understand, from novice Day Hiker to a seasoned Thru Hiker. It has very detailed info of every aspect of the trail. This is a MUST HAVE BOOK....

Our family has recently become interested in day hiking, and we have enjoyed some great hikes at National Parks across the country. Sadly, those experiences are limited to a two-week window each year. We were thrilled to discover this book that revealed the Lone Star Hiking Trail just up the road from the Houston area!
We plan to use the book over the next few years as we hike bits and pieces of the LSHT. The first two chapters of the book gave us a thorough overview of the area and helped us to prepare well for our start on the LSHT. The author's description of the trail was detailed and helpful. In fact, exactly where she points out that we should "expect to hear dogs barking" near mile 7, a dog came right up to the fence line to do just that! Overall, the author has done a wonderful job of educating the hiking newcomer. She introduces aspects of hiking in general and also brings up specific LSHT facts important to the reader. My impression is that she also provides useful information for all levels of hikers and backpackers. |
