I remember reading this book back in 1996, and got hooked. Since that time, I have kept an eye open for a sequel that never appeared. I think it could have easily been written into several more books. The ideal of a cowboy space ranger is very appealing.

Stellar Ranger, Lone Star, (1995) by Steve Perry is the first of what I thought was going to be his next series after the Mattadora series, but alas, I can't find a sequel. I have, however found a prequel.
Stellar Ranger is about an aging Stellar Ranger, Rudyard "Cinch" Carson on an assignment to the frontier planet of Mtizito where he finds a crooked governor trying to take advantage of a native sentient group that few think are sentient. The book is full of action, typical of Perry, but you'll have to read it yourself to see if the good guys win or not. All in all an enjoyable read. I just wish Perry would write a sequel.
