Good but something was missing.....,
By Barb H (OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Lone Texan (Mass Market Paperback)
I waited a long time for this book to come out and was so excited to read it. I LOVED Drummond and Sage in the earlier books so much!! The chemistry between them was off the charts and they were magic. I couldn't wait to see their love story unfold. Was it a good read? Yes, but I felt something was missing. I'm not sure what, I really can't put my finger on it but it didn't quite live up to what I'd hoped for. It wasn't as magical as I expected.
When I first started reading I got the immediate feeling it was going to be full of secondary characters that were going to take away too much time that should be devoted to the two main characters, as sometimes happens in Jodi's books, and then when they became separated for 80 pages I definitely got the feeling this wasn't going to be what I'd hoped. Again, IMO, this was way too long to separate the main characters. I expect them to be separated and to have conflict, you wouldn't have a good story if you didn't, however sometimes I think it's extended way too long with no real purpose other than to fill pages. What happened in those 80 pages could definitely have been condensed with the same effect. The third thing that made me skeptical I wasn't going to get what I was hoping for, two secondary characters seemed to be getting more steamier love scenes than Drum and Sage. Still...I kept reading but was getting pretty discouraged. Things did an about face. Even though the beginning had a slow start most of the second part of the book had Drum and Sage together more often than not and when they were apart it was only for brief periods. YEA! And yes the love scenes did get better! The one thing I was disappointed in however was the end. Jodi tends to have her hero's disappear somewhere toward the end then they show up in the last one or two pages for the big ending except there's not enough time for a big ending or a really satisfying one. Sage and Drum had a few sentences after reuniting and that was it. What a big let down especially when I know Jodi can do an awesome ending with more than a few paragraphs. I felt cheated with the ending. It really needed to be much longer than it was. Please correct that! Had the ending been there I would have probably given it a 5 but the build up just wasn't there as it should have been at the end. Still, all in all....I wouldn't have missed these two characters for anything. They were wonderful!

LOVE JODI THOMAS' NOVELS,
By
This review is from: The Lone Texan (Mass Market Paperback)
I've always loved Jodi Thomas novels, and have been impatiently awaiting for this one. I loved the fire between Drum and Sage and couldn't wait to hear their story. Plus I loved all the McMurry men so I'd hoped to get a taste of them involved in Sage's life as well.
I'll still give the book five stars because I love Jodi's writing, and it was a good story, though I had expected something a bit different. I would have liked to have seen them together more with all the tension they shared in the pervious novels. I did though enjoy the interaction between Bonnie and Brad. I just felt there was a little too much disconnection and space between the two main characters. All in all, it was still a great story and well written.

Western romance, action, adventure - all in one,
By
This review is from: The Lone Texan (Whispering Mountain) (Kindle Edition)
This book was the first of Jodi Thomas's that I ever read. Once read, I was hooked on her books. I like romance, but don't really care for the over the top kind. This book kept the romance heated while moving on through adventure. I think I enjoyed this book mostly because I could indentify with the independant nature of the heroine. She is strong, but not totally unyielding to the strength of a man. I highly recommend it.

Love the Whispering Mountain series by Jodi Thomas. After reading reviews of The Lone Texan, I didn't think it would live up to the other books in the series. I was very wrong! By far my favorite Jodi Thomas book. Love Drum and Sage's story. Excellently written, fast paced, and brought in a few new characters.

I really enjoyed reading all the Whispering Mountain books. I really like Jodis writting style, romance without too much mushy stuff. I like how the main male characters are family men, take care of their own without being too macho. I appreciate the writer not constantly harping about the perfection of her characters, thats a big turn off for me. I"m new to writting book reviews, so I don't really know what others are looking for in a review...

I was more interested in the secondary romance. The heroine was a lot nicer than Sage. I wanted this book so much, waiting for it to be at a good price, and really wanted to read Roak's story. The story itself was written very nicely, but not the characters.
Roak deserved someone better than her. Sage was just mean and selfish. I wanted to like her, because I liked her in the previous book. But she was so rude here! I couldn't believe how different she acted. She kept referring to Roak as a "kid", and it annoyed to me to no end, simply because he was 3 years younger than her. He certainly acted a lot more mature than her. Bonnie was a great character, and I wish there could have been a whole book for her romance. She was real, respectful, selfless, and not stuck-up. Also, the ending for this was crappy, like some of the reviewers said. They reunited in less than a page.

Jodi Thomas spins a tale of the old west that easily rivals any done by the guys we all grew up with. Her style packs humor, suspense, and a lot of fun. The good guys and the bad guys are all built in great detail so we definitely know who would be wearing a white hat and who would usually sport a black hat if this were one of the old shoot `em up movies or TV shows.
Set in 1859 we get to meet the early Texas Rangers and walk through the other history of the time in a way that makes it come alive. There is such a sweetness mixed into the hard times when Sage's friend Bonnie falls in love. Sage doesn't let the personalities stand in the way of using her medical skills if anyone is hurt. Even Drummond is able to show a gentler side while trying to hold onto his bad boy image. All of Ms. Thomas' characters and often priceless dialogue has helped make this series one that I wish could go on forever. - Dee Dailey

I could not wait to read this book. I knew Sage's story would be filled with her wanting her way and fighting with Drum, but I think it went a little over board in that area. She fought with him over everything. And I was tired of her constantly seeing him as a kid the first half of the book. I did enjoy the book and if you have read the others you will want to read this as well. It's a great addition to the series. When Sage finally see's Drum for who he really is, the book starts geting better and better. All in all it was kind of a slow start but is very interesting and ends good. Bonnie and Brad were a nice addition to the book. Texas princess was my favorite, and I was disappointed Tobin was the only brother not in this book. But it was nice to visit Whispering Mountain again, and even hear from Martha:)
