Book Description

September 15, 1998

"I went into lots of fights by myself, and I came out by myself, too!" said Captain Manuel T. Gonzaullas of the Texas Rangers. Hence his nickname. In "Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas, Texas Ranger, Brownson Malsch describes Gonzaullas’s career, first as a major in the Mexican Army and then as an agent of the U.S. Treasury Department, before he joined the Rangers in 1920. Although trained as an "old-style" Texas Ranger, Gonzaullas was an early advocate of scientific crime-detection methods and was instrumental in setting up the state’s first modern crime-detection facility. His many cases included the Santa Claus bank robbery in Cisco, the famous courtroom burning and lynching in Sherman, the race riots in Beaumont, and the Phantom Killer episode near Texarkana. Following his retirement in 1951, Gonzaullas developed a career as a Hollywood technical adviser.

Illustrated with many photographs of Gonzaullas, his associates, and his weaponry, this edition also includes a new introduction by Texas Ranger historian Harold J. Weiss, Jr.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lone Wolf Scores Big, October 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lone Wolf Gonzaullas, Texas Ranger (Paperback)
Author and historian Brownson Malsch captures with his customary skill the greatness of modern-day Texas Ranger Captain M.T."Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas in this small but powerful biography. From the Lone Wolf's baptism of fire along the Rio Grande in the 1920's to the oil boom days in east Texas, Malsch recounts the engaging story of one of the most renowned and most colorful men to have ever worn the star of the Texas Rangers. In a career that spanned some four decades, the Lone Wolf became one of the most charismatic characters to have served as a Ranger, and one of the most feared lawmen among the criminal element of the Lone Star State. With a forward by Mary Nell Garrison, the wife of Colonel Homer Garrison, the longtime director of the Texas Department of Publich Safety, and an accomplished historian in her own right, this book offers up a fascinating account of the exploits of "Cap" Gonzaullas. The book is well indexed and could easily serve as a source of research data for those interested in the history of the Texas Rangers. Lone Wolf Gonzaullas was, without question, a unique individual who served during a time of transition for the Rangers. This book offers up an interesting perspective on this exceptional man whose work spanned this time of change.

Somewhat interesting historically. No first hand accounts. All stories are told by an observer.

Having read numerous books on the Texas Rangers (including biographies), I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of analysis of the political influences and vicissitudes that impact on law enforcement officers (LEOs). However, it is clear that Ranger Gonzaullas provided society with dedication and performed with valor throughout a long career. Without LEOs like him, our Country would be a lesser place. The book is well written, provides meticulous career details, and is enlightening about what is necessary to be a successful Texas Ranger (at least in earlier times). Despite its somewhat mundane quality, the student of law enforcement will benefit from reading this book.
