Editorial Reviews

Lonely & Blue: The Deepest Soul of Otis Redding contains the hits (I ve Been Loving You Too Long, These Arms of Mine, My Lover s Prayer, Free Me) alongside many lesser-known songs (Gone Again, Open the Door, Waste of Time, Everybody Makes a Mistake, to name a few). They re all included in this brand new compilation because they share the tangled theme of sorrow.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Soul That's Yearning To Hold You March 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's late at night and the soulful voice of Otis Redding fills the air. There's pain in his heart and it floats across the soulful horns, the blues-filled organ and the slow bass, guitar and gentle drum. From dreams to regrets, from pleading to desire, this collection is filled with yearning -- yearning for love, yearning to hold someone he wants to hold, yearning to be free.

The producer of this collection has been quoted as saying that he "tried to find the saddest most potently heartbreaking songs [Otis] ever sang, with no regard for chart position or notoriety." He's come close; there's a ton of heartbreak in these songs.

The theme of this collection reminds me of Otis' famous words: "These arms of mine, they are yearning, yearning from wanting you. And if you would let them hold you, Oh how grateful I would be."

While no album, to me, surpasses the passion of "Live in London & Paris," this is a fine collection to put on when darkness fills the air and only the light of the moon glows through the window. Sometimes sad songs can make you smile.

4.0 out of 5 stars +1/2 - The Otis Redding album that could have been March 13, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Producer David Gorman has worked a bit of sleight-of-hand in creating this what-might-have-been Stax/Volt release. By cherry-picking from Otis Redding's catalog, Gorman's built the most consistent studio album that Redding never released. Rather than balancing heartbreak with hip-shaking soul, Gorman's playlist gives in only to pleading shades of blue: forlorn, yearning and desolate. Think of this as the soul music equivalent of Sinatra's In the Wee Small Hours, Where Are You? and No One Cares, with Redding carrying a torch that just won't burn out. Like Sinatra, Redding is imprisoned by confusion, sorrow and loneliness, fighting back from emotional destruction, and undercut by somber instrumental backings that only pick up their head to lash out with their horns. Redding's original albums include many landmarks, but none drink so thoroughly from the well of late-night sorrow as this collection of hit singles, album tracks and a killer alternate version of "I've Got Dreams to Remember." Packaged in a mini-LP sleeve with ring-worn retro cover art and fictitious DJ liner notes, the package delivers twelve straight shots of Redding's deepest soul. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5.0 out of 5 stars A benchmark in soul April 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD
While the "Otis Blue" album remains one of the top 5 soul albums of all time and Live in Paris and London is one of the all time great live albums, this 2013 release is a close third to these seminal albums. While I have all the tracks apart from the alternate takes, I have never heard them sound so good, in several instances it was like hearing them for the first time. The remastering is spine tingling and while everyone may have different selections for Otis' "deepest soul", David Gorman's selections are excellent. Like the 2013 RZA Stax collection Rza Presents Shaolin Soul Selection 1 21st Century remastering techniques are taking the Stax/Volt catalog to new highs - which certainly makes me very happy. "Lonely and Blue" also highlights a major gap in the Otis Redding catalog. A compilation of Big O's music that is properly annotated and mastered. Sure all his albums are available on various CDs and there are two major box sets, the 1993 "Otis!" 4 CD set on Rhino and the 2010 Demon 5CD set 100 Hits Legends-Otis Redding and we await Shout Factory's Mono Singles Collection Complete Stax / Volt Singles but there has been nothing like the Wilson Pickett Funky Midnight Mover: The Atlantic Studio Recordings (1962-1978) or Percy Sledge Atlantic Recordings sets on Rhino Handmade for the man who defined soul - Mr. Otis Redding. Perhaps Concord may take the plunge - and maybe Mr. Gorman might spearhead an effort - especially if the current wonderfully remastered slice of Memphis soul sells well. Easily worth 5 stars and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scalding Emotion, Nearly Five Decades Later. March 24, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Nobody can sing a sad song full of heartbreak like Otis could. The man cultivated so much pain and heartbreak in his music in such a short time by his death at the age of twenty-six. How did he manage to do this at such a young age without living through it himself, nobody knows.

This is a heart rending collection of songs, tortured music, however Otis somehow fills our souls with hope to deal with the misery.

These are all familiar tunes, the pleading, mournful more melancholy songs that Otis was famous for, songs which burn, like a blue flame to release the passion in the moment. Soul-deep cries for love from the master of such things.

"Lonely & Blue" is a compilation of the soul legend's best ballads, lovingly put together and sequenced by producer David Gorman.

There are a number of his well-known songs, "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "These Arms of Mine," and "My Lover's Prayer," interspersed with some deeper cut material such as "I Love You More Than Words Can Say," "Little Ol' Me," and "Gone Again."

I read...

"There isn't a single track on Lonely & Blue where he's not absolutely yearning and while that's miserable and affecting, there's something comforting to it as well. Pop it on after the sun goes down and take solace in knowing you're not the only one who's burning up."

"Lonely & Blue is the latest entry in the Otis Redding catalog and it is a well thought out and creative release. It is an album that could have been released during his lifetime, right down to the artwork."

"Rather than just repackage some of his hits again, Lonely & Blue takes the road less traveled.
