5.0 out of 5 stars Oh yeah, baby.
This album rocksers yer boxers. I own this album, as well as Flying. But, if you think these guys are good, listen to their lead guitarist Pete Stewart's solo effort after the band's regrettable split. It was produced in about 1999, I believe. A noble effort, a noble man, & quite admirable.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
My first exposure to grammatrain was their second album, Flying, which I consider to be a masterpiece for its creativity and unbelievable energy. This first album is nowhere near as good. I found it to be monotonous, although it contains a lot of the same themes as Flying, the music is a disappointment.

Why do the best bands always have to break up? I found out about grammatrain about a year ago while looking for good christian music on amazon. What I found blew me away. I never knew christian music had its own Soundgarden, one of my favorite secular bands. Grammatrain has awsome, UNDERSTANDABLE lyrics and some of the most solid rock/grunge music I have ever heard. I own both Lonely House and Flying, and while I love them both, Lonely house would have to be my favorite. The thing that makes grammatrain so unique among Christian artists is their style of music. Christian music used to be totally pop music. Then a few bands decided to break off from that image. Some went to a kind of "power-pop/light rock" style (Third Day, DC Talk, Newsboys, etc.), while the rest went to the complete other side of the road to all-out hardcore rock. I thought that there was no middle until I found Grammatrain that day. They figured out that seemingly unknown fact that you can have a solid rock sound without yelling the lyrics AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS. Then, as soon as they came, they were gone. But... we still have these albums to remember them by. I would strongly recommend both albums, especially Lonely House. It is one of the best rock albums I have ever heard, Christian or Secular. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack of my life for a solid 6 months, April 21, 2011
This review is from: Lonely House (Audio CD)
Grammatrain's "Lonely House" was one of those undiscovered gems of the 90s and today, a pawn shop treasure. In 1994 Grunge was king of the rock world and delivered a sound of twisting, sinewy guitars and complex yet sometimes unintelligible lyrics. Grammatrain was right on target with dark, groaning guitars and teeth-gnashing vocals, bellowing in between howls and yells. There's a plus however - Grammatrain was a Christian band, and for those who were looking for that Grunge sound but didn't want to put up with lyrics about sex, violence, or suicide (in positive ways), Grammatrain was the #1 ticket for the ride.

I've always compared them to Soundgarden. The title track of this record, along with the smothering "Picture Pains" fits in with the best of Soundgarden's songs. But to be fair, Grammatrain were their own band with their own sound, and their own mission.

Though the band is not around anymore (a short-lived reunion happened in 2009 with one or two new songs), they left a legacy worth discovering and material worth rocking to.

Don't miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who cares if this is Christian music? IT ROCKS!!!, September 27, 2005
This review is from: Lonely House (Audio CD)
Let me start by saying that I listen to rock and roll from all walks of life and I must say this is probably in the top five 90's grunge/Alt bands out there! I haven't heard their second album yet but it is on my list of CD's to get and when I do I will write another review! I know that most people turn away from an album if it is christian but these guy were more talented than most of the main stream bands that came out in the mid 90's. Their songs are solid, their vocals are clear and easy to understand, and the two slower songs on the album are simply beautiful! I loved this band then, and I still love this band now!! They should have tried to cross over into the main stream, I think they would have gone far but they stuck to what they believed and I can respect that! All I can say is that if you like Nirvana, STP, Pearl Jam, AIC, try this band out you won't be disappointed. Although they are technically a Christian band, their lyrics aren't like the steriotype you might think. If you didn't know they were a christian band from the get go you probably wouldn't catch on to the subtle referenced to christianity in this album. Give it a shot, like I said, this is only one of maybe 3 christian CD's I have in my collection out of over 100 CD's. Lets just say that the others weren't worth reviewing but this band is a must!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seatle grunge/Christian lyrics/reflecting life's striggles, April 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lonely House (Audio CD)
The album cranks. It has a very heavy driving bass line. Lyrics are dark reflecting lifes struggles. The song "Drown" is my favorite. About struggles with relying on alcohol to solve your problems instead of God. Definitely buy this one over their second album "Flying" which is still good but can't stand up to this one

Well I just found amazon today and was absolutaly thrilled to see the best band in the world is on your page whatlegends!!!!!!!!! And then was shocked to see that flying had more writen about it then lonely house.Lonely house is so much better than flying.(I found that I Was extremly disappointed with Flying not enought fat!) The album is pure grunge and I totallylove it. The solos are drop dead awesome it's a spanking and a half for your speakers! The chords are powerful and thick and very pleasing. 'Execution' will deffinatly get the blood pumping for quiet some time. The best christain grunge ever to come out! If your into pearl jam and powerderfinger you can't go past this album. My only diasapointment was that I could not experience the pureawsomeness of the band live. (a very sad stroy that) They are amazing guys with an awesome talent to present good loud grungey christian music the way it should be Grammatrain but it......

Like alternative rock sound? This group is kind of like Pearl Jam on the road to recovery out of their endless angst. Great growling bass lines, very energetic!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the best, May 1, 2009
This review is from: Lonely House (Audio CD)
Christian grunge rock? Power Metal? Post-grunge? Whatever you want to call this group, they were the best at what they did.

Pete Stewart and the Roraback brothers made as powerful a statement musically as I have ever heard in this venue. Great emotion, shredding jams, smashing and roaring bass and drums, unapologetic for thoughts or beliefs or memories painted with such a massive brush of sound. Hypocrisy and legalistic church members, abortion, child abuse, loneliness, self-examination, realization, despair and hope are addressed here and Stewart is revealed as a brilliant musician with great depth and passion. Grammatrain stands alone as the best of the Christian post-grunge bands, far above the rest.

After producing Lonely House and Flying the band broke up. Stewart was working with DC Talk and Tait and TobyMac and then apparently had to confront a personal crisis and is currently out of the business. He did make one solo album co-produced with Michael Tait which, like Flying is also well worth the effort to locate and obtain.

Pete Stewart's internal struggles with faith and life are the fuel that fires this particular album. Personally I hope he finds his own peace with life and God at the end of it all. When he was making music he believed Jesus was the answer and the music was amazing. Lonely House is the best of Pete Stewart and Grammatrain.
