campy, trashy fun,

This review is from: The Lonely Lady [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Although this movie is poorly acted, poorly directed, and poorly written, it is a blast to watch! Before Elizabeth Berkley and "Showgirls", there was this little gem from Golden Globe Winner Pia Zadora. The movie is laughable but a great party movie. Invite friends over and enjoy. This is the type of movie that is SO BAD, it is GOOD! The ending, and Pia's wonderfully campy dialogue during her Oscar acceptance speech are classic. I recommend this movie for people who wish to just have a fun time, and not have to think when viewing.

Bad, but a wonderful camp classic,

I like b-movies and after reading a lot of reviews about how awful this movie is, I got curious and bought it. The movie smells low budget but what makes it bad is a silly screenplay and directing like in an amateur movie. It also has some bad acting. Pia Zadora isn't capable of making a believable portrayal of the the heroine, Jerilee (who could with this screenplay?), but she is really charming and on a camp level, her performance is wonderful. This is a pretty bad movie, but it's also very entertaining. Everybody who likes campy movies, like I do, should own a copy of this movie. I've seen it three times in six months without getting the least bored. If you like campy cult movies - Buy it!

This is probably one of the worst movies ever made. It has no plot, the acting stinks, and the characters are all cliches. But this movie does have one thing going for it. Pia Zadora is absolutely hot in this film. Her acting is the normal below standard but man is she easy on the eyes. My recomendation, wait till it is on skinemax at 3AM and tape it. Do not spend $50+ for this movie.

THE LONELY LADY is without a doubt one of the greatest film ever made and definitly a Classic. Pia Zadora, who won a golden globe award for her great performance in "Butterfly", is absolutly fabulous as Jerilee. Get into this mezmerising and unique journey. You'll never forget it.

An American Classic,

Don't listen to all of those stuffy movie critics and people who ripped on this movie without even watching it. If they had their way, we would watch nothing but endless reruns of foreign films (w/ subtitles) and hapless domestic productions that are short on action and long on boredom. This HOLLYWOOD rags to riches story was truly inspiring! Pia Zadora gives an Oscar worthy performance while displaying all of her assets (no pun intended). In short, if there is one movie you see this year, "The Lonely Lady" should be tops on you list.

THE CROWD PLEASER,
By Martin Boucher (Montreal, Canada) - See all my reviews

What a bad bad movie THE LONELY LADY is. Yet this Harold Robbins adaptation deserves all the stops. The story centers around a busty blonde played by the legendary (yes, legendary) Pia Zadora, who wants to make it in Hollywood as a screenwriter. Her path to there is a no holds barred, sexually charged, unintentionally funny, so bad it's so good, jaw dropping extravaganza you'll be glad to witness. Zadora literally throws herself in the main title role. One can even glimpse at a talented actress behind her many over-the-top fits. As for the script, well, there isn't any--just a sew-on take of its star in different states of undress who, in between stages, delivers such howlers as "if I write for anyone, Vinny, I write for ME!". The powers that be at Universal who, needless to say, have the rights to this gem, should really swallow their pride and release it on DVD (with outtakes and commentaries, of course). Can't they see they have a definite camp classic in their hands ?-----Martin Boucher

This movie is at best a trivialization of an already trivial novel by Harold Robbins. Eminently Avoidable ! This was my first look at pia zadora and i am still wondering what's all the fuss about ?

I didn't like this movie much when it was released back in 1983. Over the years it has sort of grown on me. I seemed to always catch it playing on TV and couldn't stop watching it. Recently, I saw it on TV, and figured I might as well buy it on video since I like it so much. The copies I purchased here in Canada from a record store were awful, and was I able to find a clean playing copy that was new on the internet. It's basically about an up & coming writer that sleeps here way to the top and meets a lot of unscrupulous people along the way. It's a drive-in movie through & through. Lots of nudity, violence, and a really lame script, but it has a certain charm that I can't put my finger on. If you like 'B' movies, this one is a must have for your collection.

Don't listen to all the uptight reviewers who say this movie is awful. People need to lighten up. I hardly think Pia and company were aspiring to great art here; instead they've created a deliciously tacky movie that has plenty of sex, drugs, and campy acting. Sometimes your in the mood for that, you know. p.s. pia's body is to die for.
