A group of climbers make a grim discovery high up in the mountains: buried amongst the peaks is an eight-year-old girl, terrified, dehydrated and unable to speak a word of English. Alison (Melissa George, TV s Grey s Anatomy, 30 Days of Night), the group leader, convinces her group to rescue her. But as they attempt to take the girl to safety, they become involved in an elaborate kidnapping plot and soon must fight for their lives as they re pursued by both the girl s kidnappers and a group of hired mercenaries sent to return the girl to her war criminal father. With danger all around them and mountainous terrain to navigate, Alison and her party are in for a grueling ordeal in order to save both the girl and themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T LOOK DOWN March 22, 2012
Format:DVD
A LONELY PLACE TO DIE is an intense action thriller buoyed by breathtaking climbing sequences and quick-paced action sequences. Set in the gorgeous Scottish Highlands, the film follows five mature adults on a climbing vacation who stumble upon a little girl buried underground, obviously a victim of kidnapping. Their decision to rescue the child propels them into a cat and mouse confrontation with the deadly and relentless kidnappers.
What elevates this sharp indie is the characters are believable and empathic, even if we don't get a lot of background we do care about them and want them to come out on top. Director Julian Gilbey expertly keeps the tension intact and elicits strong performances from his talented cast.
Melissa George (TRIANGLE, BAG OF BONES) gives an outstanding committed performance as the feisty but sensitive Allison. Ed Speelis is good as the roguish Ed who experiences a sudden and required maturity. Sean Harris oozes chilli9ng venom as evil Mr. Kidd and Karel Roden quietly compelling as Darko, the negotiator. Eammon Walker and Alec Newman round out the cast. Holly Boyd is effective as the kidnapped child.
A LONELY PLACE TO DIE is dark and an ultimate downer. Its also an expertly filmed thriller worthy of more attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting December 24, 2011
By NP
Format:Amazon Instant Video
One of the best suspense thrillers I have ever seen. It's a British film and the only person in the cast who I recognized was Kate Magowan from her role in Stardust. Nevertheless, the casting is superb and everyone fits into their role seamlessly. There are no over-the-top or forced performances, and this is helped by the crisp dialogue.

The cinematography is top notch. The director uses wide-angle shots when needed, close-ups when they are called for and the use of 'chase' cameras is also well done. Editing is great with no scene-time wasted.

I must credit the music for creating a fitting atmosphere while watching the film. It starts off with a haunting song nicely representing the mood of being alone in the Scottish Highlands and once the action gets going, it switches to faster tracks while never intruding on the dialogue or what's happening on screen.

The script doesn't let down the actors, neither do the actors let down the script. This film is nearly perfect given the budget it was shot on. It should have had a lot more publicity, deservedly, unlike 90% of summer blockbusters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story line propels must-see thriller April 11, 2012
Format:Blu-ray
By Jim Clark, publisher, Lee County Courier, Tupelo, MS

The Gilbey brothers, Julian and Will, almost didn't get to see their vision of A Lonely Place To Die, come to fruition. During one of the numerous climbing sequences a boulder came crashing down, almost hitting the production team.
The film which was filmed in the Scottish highlands focuses on five mountaineers, who get caught up in fight-to survive the elements and ruthless killers.
The climbers rest at the top of the ridge when Alison (Melissa George) tells the rest of the gang to be quiet, that she hears something.
Soon the group discover a vent pipe coming out from under the ground with a weak voice coming from beneath. They dig, uncovering a chamber with a young Serbian girl inside. She can't speak English and they can't speak Serbian but they slowly become aware that she has been hidden away as part of a kidnapping plot.
Miles from civilization the hikers must decide what to do. Knowing the danger, some want to abandon the girl saying "at least she's free from her containment." But conscience prevails and they concur they must become reluctant heroes. The girl has no experience climbing. The terrain is unforgiving so they split up with two going for help, while the other follow a longer but safer path to the nearest community.
The kidnappers return, armed to the teeth and start the deadliest of hunts.
This is a terrifying cat and mouse where the obstacles are steep, the prey unarmed and the odds astronomical.
This is a sleeper, must-see thriller.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very slow movie.
I watched about 45 minutes of what was to be a fast action movie. Very very slow for the first 45 minutes.
I simply chose not to finish watching.

This movie is action packed, but a bit too violent for my liking. Not quite what I expected. Judge for yourself.
