Great book on Alaska,

I will be visiting my daughter in Alaska soon and got a few books out of the library to help me in planning. I liked this one so much because of the great suggestions of things to do, where to book them, places to stay and eat. So, in order to be able to dog ear pages and underline the areas I want to pursue, I just had to buy it. Great photos also. It makes me excited about Alaska

ALASKA,
This review is from: Lonely Planet Alaska (Regional Travel Guide) (Paperback)
I own this guide along with Frommer's and the Eyewitness. This one is zippier and less bogged down with colorless descriptions. Eyewitness comes in number two.
Alaska is the last frontier and a place every American should see at least once in their life. Traveling the rivers and bays is a good way to experience it. Better than a cruise and less expensive. Good addresses inside LP.

The North Country,

The fourth book I've read about Alaska in the past year. Coordinating author and Michigander Jim DuFresne wrote what I consider the best guidebook on Isle Royale. He doesn't disappoint in Lonely Planet's "Alaska." Like other books in this series, it's well-organized by region, with just enough representative entries of each community's businesses and attractions to allow comparison without overwhelming the reader with exhaustive detail. I like the attention given to ecologically friendly establishments, but never in a preachy way. I love Lonely Planet's "Top" lists, which give ideas about sites or experiences to include in your journey.

Major Disappointment (e-book edition),

Have traveled the world based on Lonely Planet, but the e-book edition of Alaska was a major disappointment. Maps are so small and black/white they are worthless. Text was obviously written in 2008...not updated in 2010 as the copyright may imply. Content is typical Lonely Planet quality. I won't buy another e-edition of a Lonely Planet guide until I know they have made significant improvements, including color.

Better books out there,
This review is from: Lonely Planet Alaska (Regional Travel Guide) (Paperback)
While there's a lot of good information in the book, it is poorly organized and finding specific information on adventures or excursions was very difficult (for example, they will have sections labelled 'WHAT TO DO' but these don't actually include everything -- there will be other items listed earlier in the book that aren't properly cited in the section you need.) I bought a Fodor's travel book later and it was much better.

Lots of info, nice details, very helpful. The Lonely Planet series are always a good choice for travel info.

Very helpful book on Alaska and Tracy Arm,
By Johnny Maven "GlacierDude" (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Planet Alaska (Regional Travel Guide) (Paperback)
Tracy Arm is by far the most scenic trip there is. On my trip I saw unbelievable calving glaciers, bears, humpback whales, killer whales, beautiful waterfalls and much more. I definitely recommend going to Tracy Arm. In fact, there is a DVD on Tracy Arm called "Alaska, The Tracy Arm Experience". The DVD captures the beauty of this incredible place. The DVD is available on Amazon.
I highly recommend Tracy Arm. If you get a chance, experience it yourself. |
