A Must-Have Guide,
By Julie (Buffalo, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Planet Honolulu Waikiki & Oahu (Regional Guide) (Paperback)
My sister-in-law and I used this book daily on our trip to Oahu. We started referring to it as "the Bible"! Lots of info but not overwhelming. Fun tips on how to navigate popular tourist attractions. All information was accurate and up to date for our January 2007 trip. Highly recommended.

I used this guide along with "Oahu Revealed" and was thoroughly happy with both purchases. This particular guide, while missing color photos, had awesome walking tours and many useful maps. Each area was divided into easy to follow categories such as eating, sleeping and activities. And the reviews are short, but accurate!

Unfairly dismissive of Waikiki,

Roughly fifteen years ago, I lived in Honolulu for two years and worked in Waikiki for three months. I returned to Oahu recently as a tourist armed with this guidebook and found it wholly inadequate. It seems to regard Waikiki as an overpriced tourist trap that should pretty much be avoided in favor of the "real"'Hawaii.I strongly disagree with this tack. Waikiki is a fine tourist destination and has a lot to offer anyone doing a short vacation on the island. The neighborhood of Waikiki is roughly a mile long and five blocks deep. It has a number of hotels that range from high-end plush to budget. There are a number of excellent restaurants in the neighborhood (Hy's Steak House in Waikiki was an excellent discovery this trip that was not mentioned in the book although it's been around for 25 years) with fresh ocean fish available at many. The shopping is also good, with the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in the neighborhood. On top of that, Waikiki Beach is a gorgeous sand beach with modest waves and shallow waters so that playing in the ocean is fun without being overly perilous. In short, the beach, the food, and the shopping can all be enjoyed in one neighborhood, so you don't need to rent a car drive anywhere to enjoy yourself. I think the author's treatment of Waikiki is unfair and inadequate, and I didn't end up using this book very much.

this book was great for our recent trip to hawaii, i used it most days when deciding where to eat, shop, sightsee, even had locations for laundromats which i needed at one point. another plus is that its not as big and weighty as a lot of the lonely planet guides its handy to chuck in the handbag too.

Great travel book for a local vacation.,

My husband & I used this book originally in May 2008 for our vacation to Oahu and it has been used over and over by our friends. We go on vacation to experience the culture of that area and not go to all the touristy places and eat at places we can eat at on the main land. So this book was great for that. We did a lot of free stuff and saved so much money on our trip to Oahu because of this book. The walking, hiking and observation tours were great. We rented a house on the North Shore far away from the tourist areas and this book knew so much stuff for the North Shore also. And the food it recommended was amazing, unique and so affordable. I highly recommend this book. It made our vacation to Oahu amazing.

This is a fantastic travel guide and very well organized. This was our first time at Oahu and so we decided to purchase this guide based on the recommendations we read here. We planned our vacation mainly around the sights and restaurants recommended in the book and I must say that we were pleasantly surprised, this guide not only points you to the best tourist attractions but also to some of the best not so known locations around the island. Great buy and highly recommended.

I enjoyed the pics and the recommended itineraries, but was VERY disappointed to have been misdirected on the drive from from S. Beretania to the Mt Tantalus area and then again on the Makiki Valley Loop hike. Almost missed our Sunday brunch reservations and didn't get to do the intended route due having to back track.
