More About the Author

Bradley Mayhew was born in Sevenoaks, Kent in 1970 and currently lives in Yellowstone County, Montana. A degree in Oriental Studies (Chinese) at Oxford University kickstarted 20 years of independent travel in the remoter corners of Asia and a career writing guidebooks. With his classmate, he wrote the Odyssey Guide to Uzbekistan, the first guidebook to the country, in 1995. He has since written over 25 guides for Lonely Planet, specialising in Central Asia, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, China and Yellowstone National Park.

In the course of his research trips he's been arrested in the Tajikistan Pamirs, forced to make a self-criticism in Tibet, slept in a cupboard in Nicaragua and spent way too much time eating mutton kebabs across inner Asia. Bradley has also written for Insight guides and Rough Guides and has lectured on Central Asia to the Royal Geographical Society. He was recently seen retracing the route of Marco Polo for a five-hour German TV documentary (Arte/SWR), airing in 2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful, May 13, 1999

This review is from: Lonely Planet Karakoram Highway (Paperback)
I reviewed several guidebooks on Pakistan before selecting this one. Lonely Planet is the best. It has the most detail information for travellers. Looking for a guesthouse, a motel, or a hotel in every corner of Pakistan, its in there. Travelling accross the country? Want to know how to make travel arrangement? Its all in there. Most importantly the prices are there. From the Arabian Coast to the borders of China, Iran and India this book is a traveller's survival kit; it all you need for you trip to Pakistan.

Born in Guyana and living in the USA, I decided to visit Pakistan in 1994. I was able to make my travel plans based on this guidebook. Its detail map was of great help. Where to stay, where to eat, what to buy, what to see and travel tips are all there. From this book I was able to get an accurate idea of how I should budget.

Using Lonely planet, I visited Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Taxila, Mardan, Peshawar, Saidu Sharif, Bahrain, Kalam (SWAT IS BEATIFUL), Muree, Abbotabad, Kaghan, Naran and Kashmir. My trip was a success thank to Lonely Planet. This guidebook is worth purchasing. Now that I am plannig to return to Pakistan I have purchased the 5th edition as I plan to visit Gilgit, Quetta, Chitral, Iran and India.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the most remote parts of the world, but well worth it, November 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lonely Planet Karakoram Highway (Paperback)
I recently completed a trip across the length of the Karakoram highway, and found this guide book excellent. It provided a lot of useful background on the different people and cultures whom we encountered, and had great information on the various towns and villages along the way. It was particularly helpful to have the phrasebook section at the back with all the different languages of the region. This is a wonderful part of the world to visit, but not the easiest to travel in, so a book like this makes all the difference.
