5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, October 22, 2005
This review is from: Lonely Planet Landscape Photography (How to) (Paperback)
This book starts out by introducing basic concepts such as exposure, composition, lightning and how this effects landscape photographs. It then continues with an in-depth description of how to approach various landscapes and weather conditions. The text is clearly written and each concept emphasized with illustrative examples. The book can be followed by novices, but the large amount of tips and tricks should definitely attract more experienced photographers. Also nice about this book, is that the description of camera gear is done in a very general way, omitting examples of todays hardware (outdated tomorrow). Reading this book has strengthened my technical background and given me a lot of ideas that I'm eager to try out. I have no trouble recommending it.

I was terribly surprised, given Lonely Planet's reputation in the travel world, to find that this book on landscape photography not only broke new ground, but was primarily concerned with revisiting far too much material on film cameras and film types. Given the proliferation of very high quality digital cameras and media I expected to find answers to questions regarding the use, advantages of, and even protection of digital equipment.
Film is great in many ways and I still carry a film-loaded back when I go out for any serious photography, but digital is taking over.
As for the tips regarding landscape photography, there is a great deal of common sense advice contained here and if you've never done much landscape photography, this is a good start, especially if you're still using film and not yet into digital. That said, however, the information on landscapes is pretty basic.
Lots of text and not too many illustrations of the points mentioned. I'm sure there must be better material available.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on landscape photography, March 19, 2009

Composition is stressed here. When I need some ideas on composition I always go to back to this book. The pictures are beautiful, too. However, the author also stressed the need for post-processing like using Photoshop. I'm not really into post-processing. I only use Photoshop to add watermark on my pictures.

I'm so thankful I purchased this book. Good buy!
