Book Description

November 1, 2010 Travel Literature
From bat on the island of Fais to chicken on a Russian train to barbecue in the American heartland, from mutton in Mongolia to couscous in Morocco to tacos in Tijuana - on the road, food nourishes us not only physically, but intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually too. It can be a gift that enables a traveler to survive, a doorway into the heart of a tribe, or a thread that weaves an indelible tie; it can be awful or ambrosial - and sometimes both at the same time. Celebrate the riches and revelations of food with this 38-course feast of true tales set around the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Orange juice and molecular gastronomy January 30, 2011
Format:Paperback
An interesting selection of short stories which range from unexpected tea with indian guru's to the wonders of molecular gastronomy. Many of the writers are well known from TV cookery shows and newspaper columns and the style of writing varies hugely from casual conversations to more in depth gastronomic discourse. However it is the simplest stories closest to home which often are the most moving and engaging, and the one about a glass of fresh orange juice in Italy has a moral for us all...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for my foodie husband! July 6, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was the first food book I've ever been able to surprise my husband with (he's usually in line for the latest as soon as it comes out) - and it was a home run! He loved the essay format, which let him bounce around from one food writer to another without needing to go in any order - and the mix of authors, from the very famous like Bourdain to lesser-known food writers offered a nice varied diet for the reader. A great gift for anyone who loves to eat and travel!

Not every story was to my liking, just as not all foods, nor all of any category or collection might be. But, altogether, this is a terrific conglomeration of foodie stories. Read more

I love Anthony Bourdain. I love his shows, his cooking, and his books, which are just like him. He writes just like he talks on the show, and you find yourself feeling as if you... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written foodie lit
Bourdain usually does not disappoint - at least as far as I'm concerned. His writing is just as fast paced as his commentary on TV. Always hilarious, always entertaining. Read more

I'm sure the individual stories are wonderful, but a collection of touching experiences by explorers more in love with their surroundings than the meal felt a bit contrived.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit or miss anecdotes
I like Anthony Bourdain's style a lot, but found most of the contributors either boring or pretentious, there were a couple good pieces though - worth a skim if you have free time.
