Lonely Planet - THE ONLY travel guide you need!,
By
This review is from: Lonely Planet Rome (City Travel Guide) (Paperback)
I've visited 44 countries, mostly on a budget, and Lonely Planet is THE only book I would consider using. It's throrough, comprehensive and concise. It's especially geared for the budget/adventure traveler, though it would also prove useful to anyone on a tour or cruise. Lonely Planet is packed with maps, useful phrases, history lessons, tips on culture & conduct, addresses and descriptions of museums, hotels, restaurants - everything you need. Though Lonely Planet leans towards those of us who travel in hostels and budget hotels, it also gives a good description of hotels and restaurants for those who wish to travel in a more luxurious manner. There are other good travel books out there - Eyewitness Guides, etc - that have a lot of beautiful photos - but unless you're traveling with a steamer trunk, these are of little use because they lack the information you'll need while on the road. Look at the others for inspiration before you go, if you'd like, but pack your Lonely Planet. I'd never travel without it.

The formatting and hyperlinking of this book is awful on the Kindle. It was so bad that I decided to stop reading it and buy the Rick Steves Rome book instead. Aside from it looking not that great, the hyperlinks mostly don't work properly. They take you near where they're supposed to, but not exactly there. Also, the maps aren't very good. That's forgivable for a Kindle version of a travel book, but Rick Steves usually has decent maps, even in digital form. The organization was a mess. It didn't seem to make a lot of sense or flow very well. The information on the sights were pretty basic. Sometimes, it did have some interesting additional information, and the history section was cool, but the book was so odd to navigate that I couldn't really take advantage of the few nuggets of solid information it had. It also didn't make it easy at all to find the sights it was talking about. Maybe this book is good in paper form, but they shouldn't have even bothered transferring it to Kindle if they were going to put such little effort into it.

Don't waste your money on the Kindel addition. This drab unlinked addition has few visuals and little or no color. Why no color with Kindel? I am a huge Lonely Planet fan. This book pages like something out of the 1950s in it's boring, documentary and feckless style

Information on ground transport from Leonardo da Vinci airport is on page 280 something. There are multiple indexes. Organization is clearly not of concern here.Beyond that, half the text is printed in powder-blue font on a pearl-gray background. The book is clearly not aimed at travellers over 50. In keeping with the text, the "maps" are unintelligible.
