Book Description

Lonely Planet Santiago de Chile October 2000
Each map listing begins with the map title field. This title describes the coverage of the map as well as any unique map features. If no features are listed, it can be assumed that the map is a paper, folding map. We encourage customers to include the title, along with the Map Link Code or ISBN Number, to assure the correct map is ordered.

Most of the maps we sell are folded, except topographic maps, wall maps and atlases. Wall maps are listed with dimensions, in inches, appearing in the title field (height x width).

Map Link uses this code to identify each product. Each code begins with the map publisher's abbreviation, followed by an abbreviation of the title. Please refer to this code or the ISBN number when ordering.

The following abbreviations are used in the scale field. Please refer to the Map Scale Guide on the next page for more information about scale.

K = thousand/1:100,000 M = million/1:1 million

na = scale not available var = variable scale

p = pages (atlases)

Please note: large-scale cartography provides more detail than small-scale cartography.

From the Publisher

"Santiago de Chile" is packed with fascinating facts about opportunities most travelers would never consider an option in South America. Santiago’s architecture and history alone make it a dream vacation hub, but when you add the feria (artisans’ market), teleférico (gondola cable car), mirador (lookout point) or eat at a picada (simple family restaurant) you realize that Santiago has come a long way since it was founded in 1541. "Santiago de Chile" also covers the seaside cities of Valparaíso and Viña de Mar.

• lodging options from camping and hostels to high-rise hotels
• excursions from Valpo and Viña to Mendoza, Argentina
• tips on touring the best wineries
• food listings including international cuisine and local favorites
• 16 detailed maps, 10 in full-color

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guide to a great city, yet to be discovered..., December 28, 2000

This review is from: Lonely Planet Santiago de Chile (Paperback)
Having lived in many Latin American cities, such as Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, and also Santiago, I never quite understood why Santiago never ranked along its neighbour major cities in terms of tourism. Indeed, Santiago is a wonderful city all to be discovered. Her nightlife is at least up to the standard of Buenos Aires - and much cheaper ! At least as happening as Rio de Janeiro - and much safer ! The food is fabulous, the people are wonderful, the women are gorgeous. The only black spot on Santiago may be its high level of pollution. But apart from that, I love it ! Finally, here is a guide that contains it all. Advice for the budget traveller as well as more researched data on fine restaurants. Plenty of tips and data. By all means, take this to Santiago with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly helpful guide, September 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Lonely Planet Santiago de Chile (Paperback)
I spent 4 months studying abroad in Santiago and this book was indispensible! It had all kinds of information I needed about places to see in the city, restaurants to try and places to shop. It also has a few pages of day trips from the city (Vina del Mar, Valparaiso, and Rancagua) and maps of those places which were really helpful. If you plan to spend a good amount of time in Santiago, this is the book to get. However, if Santiago is just one small stop on your trip throughout Chile, stick with the Lonely Planet Chile guide (also very helpful). The city guide doesn't have too much more to offer, but it is much smaller and easy to take with you anywhere. If you're spending a long amount of time in Santiago, get this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars not good value for the money, January 1, 2002
This review is from: Lonely Planet Santiago de Chile (Paperback)
My friend and I spent 2 months in Chile -- 1 in santiago, 1 traveling in the south. We had both the LP Chile and LP Santiago, and the latter provides very little beyond what is found in the former. You get a few more maps, but really I expected a lot more for my money. The Santiago book generally struck me as personality free (in contrast to other LP guides, e.g. LP Peru) and it's too bad there's not a Time Out Santiago. The Time Out guides are better in almost every way-- more detailed info, more interesting tidbits, better maps and a much hipper sensibility.

Gazing west from the rocky overlook of Santa Lucia to the skyscrapers and apartment blocks of metropolitan Santiago, it's hard to imagine that just six months after Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago in 1541, Mapuche warriors nearly obliterated it. Read the first page
