Compact, Practical Guide to Lovely Pacific Northwest,
By K.A.Goldberg (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Planet Washington, Oregon & the Pacific Northwest (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) (Paperback)
This is another outstanding travel guide from our friends at Lonely Planet. This book is primarily aimed at budget travelers, and contains a host of practical information on places, lodgings, climate, and things to do. Many consider the Pacific Northwest to be the most appealing part of the USA, and this guide provides excellent information on its prime attractions. First, readers will learn about the area's two large cities (Seattle, Portland), both of which are worth a major look. There is also a host of information on superb outdoor sights and activities, including Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Olympia National Park in Washington, the Columbia River Gorge (forming the border of the two states), plus Oregon's Mount Hood and Crater Lake. As the book suggests, hikers, campers, and outdoor types should enjoy the enticing landscape but exercise normal caution on potential hazards from weather, terrain, animals, etc. The book also covers a nearby slice of British Columbia, Canada (including Vancouver), and those wishing to visit should bring their passport. If this guide has a downside, it's relative compactness means imperfect maps and a lack of complete coverage on several interesting locations. Still, this is an excellent overall guide to a very attractive destination.

It doesn't go deep into the subjects. As it has to cover a lot of territory, a brief description is given for each. Some very specific topics are left uncovered. And as always with Lonely Planet guides, maps could improve SO much. You have to realy on other sources (Google Maps, etc.) to plan your trip and find those places the book talks about. Information was very accurate, though. I'd recommend it with these observations taken into account.

This and Fodor's Pacific Northwest served well as our guides to the Oregon & Washington coasts for three weeks. As longtime AAA (autoclub) members we still carry and occasionally refer to their guidebooks; but, prefer Lonely Planet & Fodor's.

I boughts this travel guide to my visit to the west coast after a coupple of days y saw at borders Fodors guide y bought it also and I have to says Fodors guide is a lot easier to read and to make itineraries. Also is more detailed. Maybe some people dont like the stars ratings on every spot but for me it was perfect to know where to go if we had little time.

this travel book has lots of helpful information.
We also used the eyewitness guide to the Northwest. Together, we were able to plan a full and interesting vacation. We have used lonely planet guides before and have always been pleased.

Yet Another Great Book About The Pacific Northwest,
By
This review is from: Lonely Planet Washington, Oregon & the Pacific Northwest (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) (Paperback)
LONELY PLANET WASHINGTON, OREGON, AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST is yet another great book covering the highly bountiful Pacific Northwestern region of the United States, as well as British Columbia in Canada. Although it lacks extensive coverage of media options for each major city in the region, that's more than compensated for by in-depth descriptions of sightseeing, dining, and outdoor activities, as well as discussion of local vernaculars. This is a book that no one who enjoys traveling should be without.

Great book and very helpful for our travels. Many of the prices printed were out of date (Hotels, entertainment, etc...) but prices change often so just call and check.
