Lonley Planet Yucatan 2nd Ed,
By Linda Schnetzer (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Planet Yucatan (Lonely Planet Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan) (Paperback)
We are big fans of the first edition of this guide - and were anxious for the new version to become available - since many places in the Yucatan are changing vbery quickly. The 2nd edition is a major disappointment as instead of new information, it just looks like any out-of-date information was removed - nothing new added. This is especially disappointing since Playa del Carmen, and Tulum - two areas that were well written and useful in the earlier edition, are changing so much. I recommend getting the first edition if you can - it is much more comprehensive. This is the first Lonley Planet Guide we have even been disappointed with. I hope a new and better edition will come soon.

I bought this last week after using the first edition on a previous trip. I was quite surprised to find it had been cut down by nearly 100 pages. This is now the slimmest guidebook for the area by far. Only five places to eat listed in Tulum, ten places to eat in Playa del Carmen, and only a few paragraphs on some of the Mayan sites. It's still probably more reliable than the other guidebooks for those on a budget, but don't get this expecting to find loads of in-depth information.Tim Leffel, author - The World's Cheapest Destinations

helpful guide,
By M. A. ZAIDI "Ali Zaidi" (Karachi; Pakistan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Planet Yucatan (Lonely Planet Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan) (Paperback)
This is a detailed well documented guide for a traveler to explore and better understand the region. The guide has a list of all cities in the region and can easily get the tourist acquainted with the area. The introduction to the cities begins with a historical background; has an orientation and information section; followed by the tours of the city; places to stay; restaurants and things to do.My stay in the region was predominantly in Playa del Carmen; which is less crowded than Cancun and has the same to offer. Its location is ideal as it is centrally located in proximity to Cozumel and all the Mayan sites in the region. During my stay it was a very helpful guide.

this guide leaves out a lot of things. You need more detailed info abhout getting around and where to eat and stuff. I think it's pretty outdated too. they pay too much attention on Cancun and less on the rest of the Riviera.

Not perfect, but we'd have been lost without it.,
This review is from: Lonely Planet Yucatan (Lonely Planet Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan) (Paperback)
This was a great help backpacking around the Yucatan and beyond. Most of the info paid off - particularly with regards to the cheap hotels - but don't forget, prices change in the time it takes to write and print a book like this! If there was a down side, it's that it didn't explain just how awful some of the public transport systems truly are - it's truly murder trying to get to some places, even the big ones like Chichen Itza, at times. There was enough info on the places without going overboard and the maps were decent enough to follow. This was way above the other guides we checked out, so I doubt it'll disappoint.

Lonely Planet Yucatan rocks!!,

I chose this book from 10 or more books I browsed in the bookstore. It was sooooo useful once I got there. Every place highly recommended by the book was definitely worth going. The only caution is that the price of food, etc., has increased quite a lot.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to see Yucatan for snorkeling/diving and mayan pyramids. |
