The Lonely Scarecrow,
By The4Piggys@aol.com (N. Ogden, UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Lonely Scarecrow (Hardcover)
Outstanding! The story is wonderful and the illustrations are beautiful. It is truly one of the nicest books we have in our extensive collection of childrens books. It is really appropriate for a much wider range of ages than what was recommended.

Wonderful Book,

The illustrations in this book are beautiful. The embossed, double thickness pages make it more "handable" for my toddler whose prone to destroying his sister's books. My 4 year old loved story and I loved the lesson it teaches!

DELIGHTFUL IN EVERY WAY.,
This review is from: The Lonely Scarecrow (Hardcover)
I love this little book. It has a wonderful message of friendship, teaching that not is always as it seems and to give people a chance. It is a wonderful story of loneliness and how it is overcome. I also love the illustrations in this book. The art work along is worth the price of the book several times over. The text is simple and quite lyrical. This is a joy to read to the kids in class as well as to the grand children and children at home. This one has been around for a couple of years and I am quite glad to see it still in print. This is one of those you will want to buy and keep. Recommend this one highly.

beautifully illustrated!,

Despite the actually scary scarecrow, my 2 1/2 yr old boys love this book. They bring it to us to read several times a week. They love feeling the embossed pictures and telling me what they see. As the reading parent, I don't mind reading it to them over and over. The illustrations truly are beautiful, the font is also open and pleasing to read, and the story itself is one we should all remember - judge other not by their looks but by the friend they might become. My only concern might be that the scarecrow really might be too scary for some children with its jagged teeth and open mouth. I'm suprised this book isn't available today (Jan '02). It was printed in 1999 and our library copy (now due back after being checked out for 3 months!)is still in perfect condition. I hope the printer considers another printing for those of us who want our own copy for our collection!

Scarecrow lives in the middle of a wheat field.
The animals who also live in the area, or frequent the field, stay far away from scarecrow. They are frightened by his jagged metal mouth and ragged outward appearance. Aw. Poor scarecrow! So lonely and sad, just wanting a friend. One winter night, snow falls and transforms scarecrow into a very cute and jolly snowman! The animals and birds love this "snowman" and play with him every day! Spring comes and the snow begins to melt. Guess what? Even as the snow slides off of scarecrow, the animal friends are no longer afraid of him! They all are happy and remain friends for life. -The pages of this book are heavy, almost board-like. The best thing is they are embossed. Beautiful illustrations.

Good Message, Good Book, GREAT Illustrations!,
By Terrie (Little Chute, WI USA) - See all my reviews

This book is just beautiful all the way around. It is the story of a scarecrow who is very lonely because the little country animals are too frightened by his raggedy clothes and his not-so-pretty appearance to get close to him. Eventually things change for the better and in the process we are treated to a wonderful lesson in tolerance and acceptance. We are also delighted by a natural atmosphere filled with charming animals and detailed illustrations of golden wheat fields dotted with red poppies. Pages trimmed with all manner of lovely flora from foxgloves and daffodils to snow drops and violets lift the heart. To further add to the beauty of this book, it is printed on heavy stock which will tolerate the handling of little learning people and the drawings are embossed to add texture and appeal to the total work. I love this book and I think you will, too.

Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated!,

My boys brought this book home with them from their school library. It is so much more than just a story about a scarecrow! I believe that if you read it to your older children - or have them read it, that they will get an even deeper meaning out of it. I have already requested this book for my boys for their birthday. It will definately be a favorite in our house. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants their child to lear to look beyond outward appearances and be more accepting.

The artwork is gorgeous and every page is thick, embossed stock, so my children love to run their hands over the pages as I read. The moral of 'don't judge a book by it's cover' is taught in a lovely way.
