5.0 out of 5 stars Playdough changes the game again, February 25, 2003
This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
Playdough changes the game with this one man for real. a couple of questions have been asked so I will answer them.
1. Who is Playdough simiair too? A: Yo, he is not similair to anyone except himself in his words "They try to compare me to everyone from Everlast to Wycleffe" but hesin a class in his own. mixing vocals guitar his self-produced beats except for 2 of them and the smoothest flow you will hear.
----------------------------------------------------------------
2.Why should I buy this album. A: If you like Hip-Hop thats not all about jewelry, rims, women, and drugs it's for you if you want wack bling bling over-commercialized rap it isnt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bangin' Beats..Spiritual Lyric, April 5, 2003

Joshua Galla (Hagerstown, Maryand US of A) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
Playdough definitely reps Ill Harmonics with his 1st solo LP. I was a long-time listener to mainstream HipHop (i.e. Biggie, Wu-Tang, Nas, etc). Then..I got ahold of a few cds like Cross Movement, KJ-52 and DJ Maj. After that, my heart and train of thought was changed.

Playdough is full of meaningful lyric, subwoofer-blowin' beats and a powerful message. From "Seeds of Abraham" (his 1st single) to any other of the joints...it's allllll good.

He can be compared to a true MC (i.e. Common, Roots). Step away from the negativity and sin-filled influence of the Jay-Zs and Eminems...

4.0 out of 5 stars Jammin' in the alley, August 2, 2003
By
J Lee Harshbarger (Ypsilanti, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
This rap album has a sound different from any of my other rap albums. It has a sound that brings a term to my mind "underground," although there is an actual category of underground rap, which I don't know what it sounds like, so I hesitate to use the term lest I conjure up images of a sound this does not represent. The sound on this album makes me feel like here's a group of guys in a back alley somewhere making a rap album. The sound quality, the distance of the vocals, all give the album a kind of "homemade" sound, yet the quality of the album is superb. And I don't mean to make it sound like it's a poor quality recording; I don't feel that way at all; it just has a back-alley sound, and is very fitting to the music.

The album is very downtempo, but some of the songs have a really strong beat, so they're great for dancing. I like this album very early in the morning when I'm not quite awake but I'm in the mood for rap--it kind of gets me going, like an aural cup of coffee. But I also can enjoy it in the evening when I'm tired, and I don't want something rambunctious, but I want something creative and fresh.

Creative and fresh. Yes, that describes this album. The sounds, the samples, they are definitely on the edge, not [imitation] hiphop.
