5.0 out of 5 stars Playdough changes the game again, February 25, 2003
This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
Playdough changes the game with this one man for real. a couple of questions have been asked so I will answer them.
1. Who is Playdough simiair too? A: Yo, he is not similair to anyone except himself in his words "They try to compare me to everyone from Everlast to Wycleffe" but hesin a class in his own. mixing vocals guitar his self-produced beats except for 2 of them and the smoothest flow you will hear.
----------------------------------------------------------------
2.Why should I buy this album. A: If you like Hip-Hop thats not all about jewelry, rims, women, and drugs it's for you if you want wack bling bling over-commercialized rap it isnt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bangin' Beats..Spiritual Lyric, April 5, 2003

Playdough definitely reps Ill Harmonics with his 1st solo LP. I was a long-time listener to mainstream HipHop (i.e. Biggie, Wu-Tang, Nas, etc). Then..I got ahold of a few cds like Cross Movement, KJ-52 and DJ Maj. After that, my heart and train of thought was changed.

Playdough is full of meaningful lyric, subwoofer-blowin' beats and a powerful message. From "Seeds of Abraham" (his 1st single) to any other of the joints...it's allllll good.

He can be compared to a true MC (i.e. Common, Roots). Step away from the negativity and sin-filled influence of the Jay-Zs and Eminems...

4.0 out of 5 stars Jammin' in the alley, August 2, 2003

This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
This rap album has a sound different from any of my other rap albums. It has a sound that brings a term to my mind "underground," although there is an actual category of underground rap, which I don't know what it sounds like, so I hesitate to use the term lest I conjure up images of a sound this does not represent. The sound on this album makes me feel like here's a group of guys in a back alley somewhere making a rap album. The sound quality, the distance of the vocals, all give the album a kind of "homemade" sound, yet the quality of the album is superb. And I don't mean to make it sound like it's a poor quality recording; I don't feel that way at all; it just has a back-alley sound, and is very fitting to the music.

The album is very downtempo, but some of the songs have a really strong beat, so they're great for dancing. I like this album very early in the morning when I'm not quite awake but I'm in the mood for rap--it kind of gets me going, like an aural cup of coffee. But I also can enjoy it in the evening when I'm tired, and I don't want something rambunctious, but I want something creative and fresh.

Creative and fresh. Yes, that describes this album. The sounds, the samples, they are definitely on the edge, not [imitation] hiphop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should have been even better, October 11, 2007
This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
I've been a big fan of Playdough (and Ill Harmonics) since seeing them live all the way back in 1999 at Cornerstone. My biggest gripe against Ill Harmonics was the lackluster abilities of Blake Knight, so when I found a solo album by Playdough I was very excited.

The album really started off great, too. However, some of the tracks try to over-do their originality a bit, and the result ranges from 'meh' to downright annoying at times. Even so, it is redeemed by the unique and oh-so-excellent (and decidedly white =]) style of one Mr. Playdough. If you are a fan of his (or Ill Harmonics') at all, this album is worth a pickup.

The vibe on this cd is great. The beats and whole mood of it is exactly what I wanted and the more I listen to it the more I realize that the lyrics are tight as well. It's a great buy especially since I bought a used copy for a much lower price :)

This album has so many different beats and styles, it's great to put on repeat. I think Playdough is extremely talented and versatile. I love his rapping style, he flows with the words like butter. Beats are original and the album has a real underground style to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars well known it is not... Top-of-the-line it is, October 19, 2004
This review is from: Lonely Superstar (Audio CD)
Always late to the scene, I just got this album recently and boy am I ever glad... Never since Grits hit the scene have I been this impressed by as artist's talent. Here's a song by song review of the CD.
1. You Will Listen 9/10 An intro, a song, maybe a bit of both? Anyway, this is an awesome... whatever it is. Backround bass simply rules.

2. Seeds of Abraham 10/10 This has a more fun beat than most on the LP. Has a good message too.

3. 5cent Needleheads 10/10 Nothing beats flute-sounding backround music with hard, up-in-your-face rapping. One of my favorite songs on the recording.

4. Clappy Valentino (clap your hands) 7/10 Hilarious with awesome drum beat, but the chorus is merely average and only one verse during the whole song to back it up.

5. Shadow Dance w/Imno 10/10 Probably my fave, since it has the best beat and chorus. Imno is featured in this song and adds a lot to the effect but his verse isn't to my taste.(But doesn't come close to ruining the song.)

6. Lonely Superstar 8/10 The guitar sounds cool, especialy during the verses. Not all that special but still special.

7. Freedom Fighters w/Jurny Big 9/10 Great message( and the message isn't saying fight and hurt others for freedom) and a great line from Jurny Big. I liked this one a lot.

8. Simple one 7/10 Not really much actual rapping, sounds like Playdough is singing rather. Unique and diverse, but won't make you nod your head to the beat or anything. The hidden track "ode to an escort" is easily song quality and fun to listen to.

9. Verbal Tea 10/10 Funny but has a spiritual message that needs to be heard. The beat has an exotic feel to it.

10. Retract the Feedback w/ Freddie B 10/10 Cool song and Freddie B has some skill. Slightly dark feeling, but not much.

11. Mr. Mike R. Phone 7/10 Quality rapping, as usual, but a lonely feel to it that I don't like.

12. Soul Brothers w/Manchild 8/10 Cool Chorus, though Manchild doesn't sound that great on this one.

13. 1/4 inchin' 8/10 Dark feel to it and has deep insight.

14. Palm Sunday 10/10 I love the feel of this one its just right.
Innovation is shown here.

15. Supreme Service w/ Joey the Jerk and J-Biets of LA Symphony. 8/10 Great verses from LA Symphony and Playdough but the chorus is annoying and its a little short.

Well that's all......

5.0 out of 5 stars Aww Man, November 4, 2002

I got this cd last weekend and what can I say? This is one tight cd. Playdough has a smooth flow. My favorite songs on this cd were "Shadow Dance" and "You Will Listen." Man! This is just too sweet. You gotta' just sit back and enjoy the smooth flows. Last but not least, it's got a good, Christ-centered message.
