Editorial Reviews

Director Joseph Kane (King of the Pecos) and his star John Wayne (Flame of Barbary Coast) teamed up again in this western about a veteran Union officer, John Ashley (Wayne) returning home from the war only to find that his presence is unwanted by his former neighbors, who had all sided with the Confederacy. Seedy carpetbagger, Benedict Holden (Cy Kendall) and his army of thugs have taken control of the town and though initially duped by Holden, Ashley realizes that Holden, without the knowledge of the governor is killing, stealing, and taxing the local ranchers out of their property under the pretense of state authority. Ann Rutherford (The Lawless Nineties) co-stars as Virginia Terry, Ashley's childhood sweetheart.

The picture and sound is in top class. And what a thrill. John Wayne and sidekick Jim Toney return to Texas after the civil war to experience that carbetbaggers are terrorising Texas. From here on it's shooting and riding and hiding and breathless suspence. Lovely Ann Rutherford is the lady and heavy Cy Kendall and henchmen Bob Kortman and Yakima Canutt are up to no good. What a powerfull trio of villains. This is simply the best of the best for b-western fans and others who will ride the trail with young John Wayne.

Great John Wayne western from the 30s --- believe this is the first time it has been released on DVD. The quality of this movie is exceptional, both the sound and video were surprisingly good. Young Wayne was at his best.

You just can't go wrong with the "Duke".
Not that I'm partial. I have collected (and cherish) 97% of everything John Wayne has ever made an appearance in. Still searching for the other 3%.
