4.0 out of 5 stars Leicester Bangs Review (1997):
Bill Janovitz - Lonesome Billy (Beggars Banquet)
Recorded over three days, Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom has produced the best work, so far, of his career. With rhythm section Joey Burns and John Convertino, bassist and drummer with Giant Sand respectively, "Lonesome Billy" explores that part of America frequented by saddle-bums and skeletal Longhorn, where tequila...

2.0 out of 5 stars Let the buyer beware on this one.
Like the other reviewer of this cd, I am also a fan of Buffalo Tom. Unfortunately this doesn't sound very similar to BT, in fact it is a bit dull. None of the songs seem to have hooks or melodies that stick - after you hear it you instantly forget it. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 to be fair, since I only played it 3 times, hoping it would grow on me. I'd recommend "Up...

Bill Janovitz - Lonesome Billy (Beggars Banquet)
Recorded over three days, Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom has produced the best work, so far, of his career. With rhythm section Joey Burns and John Convertino, bassist and drummer with Giant Sand respectively, "Lonesome Billy" explores that part of America frequented by saddle-bums and skeletal Longhorn, where tequila is drunk in dark bars and Sam Peckinpah offers the only meaningful direction.

Pedal steel, harmonica and piano weave in and out of these gritty country tunes leaving the taste of Arizona dust in the mouth and a sense of yearning tugging at the heartstrings. It would be nice to think that the rest of Buffalo Tom could be steered in the same direction.

The guy's voice is amazing stuff, a nerdy eddie vedor. he spits sarcasm and love in the same phrase. a very acoustic record full of non sequitors and engaging melodies. a must for all buffalo tom lovers, but still different enough to appeal to more senstive types.
