Book Description

Terry Rankin isn’t so sure about his new client, Gianni Lupo. Gianni is an old man, just released from prison after serving the full twenty-five years of a Life sentence for a double murder in Miami. But Terry figures the man’s paid for his crime and now he’ll spend his declining years tottering around his home on Sanibel Island. Terry isn’t sure why Lupo feels the need for armed bodyguards, but what can go wrong? After all, it’s been twenty-five years.
And three tons of gold is still missing…

5.0 out of 5 stars Another hit by Gary Showalter June 20, 2013
By BJS
Format:Kindle Edition
Quick read, lots of action, interesting story line. Particularly like the descrete references to sexual activity. (No long descriptive narration of lovemaking.) Looking forward to another book by Gary Showalter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read June 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The characters were not terrible believable but good fiction. Probably an ok beach read, not a page turner or a nail biter.

5.0 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down August 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The latest installment of Terry Rankin's adventures in Florida is even more gripping than the last three. While he may drink too much coffee and certainly goes his own way, this character and his friends take care of the bad guys in a realistic and well thought out manner. Mr. Showalter knows his stuff and could head his own protection agency if he wasn't such a good writer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read Until the End May 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book has interesting Florida and boat details. The main characters focus around the guy; the woman's a cop but there's nary a mention made of her cases/life except they eat a lot and in a male cliche, she can't cook OR make coffee. The story's interesting and there were a few "Burn Notice" moments where the guy is telling the reader something about PI work that I really enjoyed, as I loved that show. The book is way too much tell, don't show for me; even the pg love scenes. I wondered about the depth of the love there as it really seemed like convenience for much of the book.

However, the ending was so.....implausible, judgemental, and just WRONG I ended up mostly hating the book. (And it had waaay too much fluff about the cat.) I don't want major spoilers here so I'm actually going to post a comment on the review detailing why I hated the ended - as I noticed the writer's reviewed his book and commented on reviews as well.

Hopefully Mr. Showalter is just taking a break, as he lauded in the postscript. I really enjoy his writing style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Retired cop turned protection guy with lots of twists to the story.
Fairly well written story with believable characters and situations. Reads more like a journal than a novel and sometimes it is difficult to keep track of secondary characters.

Per usual Lonesome Cove surprised me; the ending was totally awesome! Showalter has shown again why he is the gifted writer that he is.

3.0 out of 5 stars lonesome cove
Lonesome cove did not keep me spellbound. It was a slow book. If someone asked me about this book I would have to tell them it was an OK book but it is a slow moving story.

More About the Author

Gary Showalter was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He lived in Aruba, Florida and the Panama Canal Zone before joining the U.S. Army during the 1960s. Following his discharge from the Army, Mr. Showalter picked cotton in East Texas, baled hay in Ardmore Oklahoma, sold light bulbs in Los Angeles, California, and built cattle pens in Fallon, Nevada (during a blizzard, of course). After settling in Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Showalter worked as a professional gardener before turning his hand to furniture making.

In 1981, he moved to Israel, married, and raised four children while working as a furniture maker, silversmith, goldsmith, and ornamental wood turner. He served in the Israel Defense Forces Reserves for sixteen years, and when not on active duty he worked in government and private security.

He has also served in senior management positions in two software development companies in Israel.

During his time in Israel, Mr. Showalter published articles dealing with international terror and the Israel-Arab conflict in the Jerusalem Post, Israel national News and several political science web sites.

Mr. Showalter returned to the United States in the fall of 2003, to care for an elderly parent. He published his first novel, "The Big Bend", in the fall of 2008. His second novel, "Hog Valley", was published in September of 2010. "Twisted Key", his third novel, was released in September of 2011, and "Lonesome Cove", his fourth, in April of 2012.

Mr. Showalter has also released a collection of published essays and articles written for newspapers and on-line political science journals during the many years he lived in the Middle East.

He currently resides in Dunnellon, Florida, where he has recently published "A Primer on Roses", a book on the planting and pruning of Roses based on his years as a professional gardener.

Mr. Showalter will soon begin writing the fifth novel in his Terry Rankin series.
